You know it is going to happen but it still seems a shock that before we knew it the last month in Thailand seemed a bit like a distance memory and we were back in Australia and back to work! We made it back to Sydney and had a much better flight than on the way there as we were on a different airline (which was probably a good thing as the one we had flow to Thailand on (Air Australia) went under a couple weeks after we got back. They didn't last long!) And it wasn't that bad as it was summer and we had our new caravan to go back to. Even if was jsut for a week, and as usual when we go back to Wollongong it seems to be a very fast ... read more

Another of Jo's friend's, Sarah, flew down from Sydney to visit us this weekend so we met up in the city to enjoy brunch in one of the restaurants on the SouthBank. It was a lazy brunch as we caught up on everything that’s been happening in the past few months – Will was even learning to join in on the girly gossiping and was able to comment on the state of his nails and cuticles! After brunch we caught a taxi to Chapel St, which is a very long road filled with shops and cafés – perfect place for some window shopping. We stopped for a drink to rehydrate along the way as it was a very hot day again and reached 37 degrees! And then carried on the shopping before stopping again for a ... read more

Jo’s friend, Jo (yes another one) arrived late on Thursday night, and as she was only in Melbourne for the 1 night before continuing her travels, she stayed at our place so they could have a chance to catch up. Thursday evening was spent catching up and gossiping over a glass of wine, but as Jo only arrived at 10pm it wasn’t long before we all needed to catch some zzz’s. The next morning Jo re-packed her backpack, which took a couple of attempts. And we then caught the tram into the city where Jo found a locker in the bus station to store her backpack for the day. We had a wander around town as we tried to give Jo a whistle stop tour of Melbourne. We stopped by 333 Collins St again where Jo ... read more

There is a local Brewery just around the corner from our flat, called Mountain Goat, where they have also set up a bar, and they offer free tours on a Wednesday, so we decided to go and check it out. The bar isn’t signposted at all so it took us a few minutes to find the entrance! It is set up in a part of the warehouse which also houses the brewery quarters, they have built a bar and above it are their offices, all decorated to make it look as if it is built out of cartons. We enjoyed a couple of beers and a pizza in the bar before the tour which took us around their tanks where they brew all their beers. We learnt a bit about the beer making process: the 4 ... read more

Ash and Adam's travel blog here. We're about to embark on a travel challenge; "How light can the Scrubba wash bag allow you to travel?" For those not familiar with the Scrubba wash bag, it is a lightweight device for washing clothes while traveling that allows you to do your laundry wherever and whenever you want. The following link shows it in more detail: http://igg.me/p/54387?a=337562. We put the question out there regarding a trip to South East Asia for 3 weeks and responses varied from 20 kg to 5 kg. Well, we reckon the Scrubba wash bag allows you to travel so clean, light and free, we can do it with less than 3 kilos each, while still bringing luxuries such as our iphones, ipods and ebook readers. Just because you travel light, doesn't mean you ... read more

So we landed in Brisbane on time and we had 90 minutes to catch our connecting flight to Melbourne, as this wasn’t Schiphol airport we assumed we were ok for time. As this was our first entry into Australia we had to claim our baggage, clear quarantine and customs, catch a bus to the domestic terminal and check in before we could be on our merry way to Melbourne. The customs weren’t concerned with the copious amount of spirits we had bagged in Singapore, oh no they wanted to inspect the tent because we had used it in Malaysia once and it may have a money spider in there. The cheek.......the country with the most deadly animals in the world is paranoid about stuff coming in!! So out came the tent and off went the plane. ... read more

Ellie and I are gearing up for our move to St Kilda on Tuesday next week. We are both now working full-time as Ellie has picked up some admin work at a Roman Catholic insurance firm (if that's not a proper gap-year experience, then I don't know what is) and should be there until Christmas; I think they have plenty for her to do. I am still working as a payroll officer/administrator and being kept busy as well. They are trying to find new work for me to do all of the time so fingers crossed I will be there for a while yet (I am working for Myer who are big department store out here and have a payroll of around 20,000 staff...I am not processing them all). We had a absolute blast at the ... read more

First week nearly over. Haven't done too much since arrived. Lots of walking and exploring (as I do). Only 20 mins walk into City centre and nearest beach. Tomorrow I leave Melbourne and take the bus to Canberra where I'm meeting with someone from one of the private hospitals there about a job (fingers crossed). Spent today at the beach working on my tan. (Had to get a tram to this one, but sooo worth it!) Weather not been too good so far (the occasional hot day) but they are only just out of Spring. Still doesn't really feel like I'm not going home for 6 months, more like I'm just on holiday. Wonder when that'll sink in? Been learning all about Italy (dorm mate from Milan), in return I'm helping her with her English. Thought ... read more

Last time I sat down to write a blog post I was on my way home, now I'm as far from it as I've ever been. Before I left a year ago one of my best friends told me he'd bet money that I wouldn't come back after only a year of travelling. I laughed it off, telling him home was where I wanted to be, that I just wanted to see something new and figure myself out a little. But since that moment, on my travels, I have become obsessed by this need for adventure and to push myself further and further, to challenge myself and experience as much as possible. I live for those moments where you can't help but cry, when the beauty of a moment overwhelms you. There was one morning, when ... read more

Ellie and I are now in Melbourne and staying with Ellie's friend in the Collingwood area (home of the Collingwood Magpies if you are up on your Aussie Rules). Melbourne is a great City and we definitely feel at home here. A lot of the Victorian architecture reminds us of London and Victoria Road (a main road near to wear we are staying) reminds me of Green Lanes (Haringey) because of the variety of restaurants/cafes/quirky grocery stores. Victoria Road is home to a lot of Asian communities and walking along the road each day, is making me want to sample some Vietnamese food! Apparently, decades ago, Victoria Road was first home to a lot of Italian communities (because of the vast amount of factory work available in the community) and after a while they gradually moved ... read more
