Waiting and waiting for our Air Australia flight to leave from Melbourne to Phuket on their 2nd day of flying so needless to say there were a few kinks to be worked out!
After packing up our new home on wheels, we flew down to Melbourne for 5 days for some work meetings for both of us and catching up with a few friends. It was a whirlwind few days and before we knew it we were sitting in the terminal at Melbourne airport waiting for our flight to Thailand, which was an event in itself. Let's just say it was the 2nd day of a new discount airline called Air Australia taking to the skies so there definitely were more than a few kinks to be worked out. Signs were still being put up; we were in the very end of the airport in a wing I am sure had just been brought out of retirement; the flight was delayed 2 1/2 hours with no announcements because there ... read more
What is it they say? The first step is admitting you have a problem?! Well not sure we actually had a problem persay.... but we did realise that maybe for the last while (couple years even) we have probably been in denial.... Denial that our 1984 caravan was almost 30 years old (is it really??!)... Denial that that we were looking a little white trashy (especially now that we had a new truck)... Denial that perhaps 14ft isn't quite enough space (especially when we seem to be coming and going with luggage all the time lately from one job to the next) So perhaps it was time to move on? It all started with some rain, a few leaks (well sometimes more than a few...), our bags being everywhere since we were leaving again in a ... read more
Some pictures of the mostly finished skatepark Brett and the guys did in Port Mac. Just a bit of landscaping left to do. It looks amazing and the town was really supportive and excited about it which was really great to see. It's right on the waterfront in a park close to the main surf beach in town and with a caravan park backing up to it. You couldn't pick a better spot.... read more
If our visitors from Canada weren't enough, we have had many frequent visits from kookaburra's, wild bush turkey's (and no I am not talking about my Dad), so many lizards that you have to watch where you step sometimes and even a few koalas in the wild. We also had Brett's aunt and uncle, Shelly and Dennis come up for a week visit and they stayed in the caravan park right next door to our apartment. So with them coming up that meant partaking in a few happy hours or 2 and trying to knock of work early. It was also Melbourne Cup Day which in Australia is pretty much an national holiday (and definitely is a stat holiday down in Melbourne!). Most businesses shut down at the very least for the afternoon when the horse ... read more
Before our visitors arrived we both had to make an unexpected quick trip down to Melbourne for a meeting with Brett's work, who are also one of my clients so it meant a bit of a whirlwind Thursday night flight from Port Macquarie, via Sydney then to Melbourne. We spent all day Friday in a meeting and then luckily had a chance to meet up with TP for dinner at our usual spot on Lygon Street – Papa Gino's. We hadn't seen her since June so was great to catch up, even if only for a couple hours. Saturday meant I was back off to Port Macquarie and Brett was staying an extra day to help a friend out with some coping for his backyard halfpipe, and he would fly back on Sunday night. There are ... read more
Brett at our 5th Anniversary dinner and a couple days short of our 4 years in Australia travel-versary
Well another month has gone by and where are we now?! It's kind of beginning to feel a bit like that at times... We flew back to Sydney on the red eye from Perth and got in around 6:30am. From there we grabbed a rental car and headed down to Wollongong (since it's cheaper when there are 2 of you than the shuttle, and we weren't really up for a couple hour train journey with heavy bags at that time). We picked up our truck that had been parked at Brett's cousins, had a bit of a visit with them, and then went and grabbed our caravan out of the storage yard and back to our usual spot at Shellharbour Caravan park. Have to admit is always nice getting back to our little home on wheels, ... read more
3 weeks has gone far to quick, and we were wishing we had an extra few days at the end to check a few things out. But we will definitely be back to this side, and have even thought quite a few times that we could easily live over here in WA. The weather has been great, the beaches are beautiful (minus the 6 metre white shark that was spotted at the beach just south of here the other day... and yes that is 6 METRES!), the people are really friendly and it is even more laid back than the rest of Australia. And super cheap flights to Bali, Thailand etc. They were advertising flights to Bali for $198 return including taxes, which I guess why they say there are more Australians in Bali than Balinese ... read more
So it was time to head to Western Australia after our quick week in Wollongong. We got dropped off at a hotel near the airport in Sydney for the night by Brett's dad on another one of his airport runs before he leaves back to Vancouver on Monday. We were sorry to see him go, but think he was happy to get back to Brett's Mom and relax a bit after all these airport shuttle runs for everyone, and we were pretty excited to be heading to Western Australia, even if we had to work. But we weren't complaining at all – especially when we stepped off the plane, into the beautiful weather, picked up our Hyundai Getz (Brett barely fits in and with our bags there is even less room, but seems to be the ... read more
And so before we knew it, our month in Adelaide was over. It would have been nice to have a couple extra days to check a few more areas out, but duty calls, and for one of us (me) that meant a quick 1.5 hr flight to Melbourne for a meeting, and for the other (Brett) a 9 hour solo drive back to Melbourne in the work truck. Not quite sure how that worked out! I think I know who got the better deal though... Although by the time you go to the airport, drop the rental car off, fly to Melourne, get your bags and rental car, drive to the hotel, it's probably only a few hours short of the drive. And I did miss some of the great sights on the way too (see ... read more
Well, we definitely seemed to have tipped the scales much more in one direction than the other since the last few weeks in Adelaide have consisted of a whole lot of work for both of us. But it wasn't so bad (although the one week of almost 80 hours was a bit much)... And really how often in the last almost 4 years have we had to say that?! At least our location was good, our apartment was really nice, we are not in different cities, and the weather has been not to bad at all for nearing the end of winter with mostly sunny days, and the odd sprinkle here and there. We did manage to have Sundays off, or mostly off anyways. One Sunday we finally managed sneak off and we headed towards the ... read more
