Not long left to go now until the hols. Ivor finished yesterday and has had a lie-in this morning. I finish next Thursday, though the children finish on Wednesday. I have had to come to school dressed in a suit this morning, as I am giving out awards at "Achievement Afternoon" to the children who have made a significant impact in deaf issues and the Deaf Community. As I normally only wear leisurely attire here, I have already had a few chuckles directed at me "I'm sorry to hear of your loss..." being amongst the pranksters comments (Ah the Aussie humour..it kills me!!) There are lots of scary bush fires around at the moment. Ivor and I keep hearing about how it's been the driest Winter since records began and how bad a "bush-fire season" it's ... read more

Hello!! * new tradition... english version down. Ils cherchaient ... read more

The rellys have gone...........it's very sad. The house feels very empty and I feel really quite upset. I suppose it has also been a reminder of how far we are from our family- Ah well, only 7 weeks until I'll see mum - first in New York ( yes I know it's a long way from Aus but we wanted to go one more time as last year's trip ended early!) and then in Aus when she comes out with Auntie J and Uncle R- though mum said she won't come if it makes me so upset!!!!! My friend Mari (an interpreter from school) is Finnish and has been out here 7 years- she therefore knows how I feel and has been sympathising with me. Ivor is at the beach today - and I'm watching "The ... read more

Ok.you're probably wondering why I have included pictures of us in Christmas hats and yet more cheesy photos!! We decided that as Ivor and I will not be in the UK for Christmas that we should have a celebration of our own- 3 weeks early. Janet and I went shopping and bought some presents, wrapping paper and decorations (from a very cheap shop called Chicken Feed - think of the old style "50p" shops and you have an idea of what it's like!!) We also bought the whole works for Christmas Dinner - including some sherry which, it would seem, is not very popular over here. We could only find about 3 varieties and ended up buying a bottle for $8 (about 3 pounds 20- no pound sign on this keyboard!!) which actually was quite nice. ... read more

:0) Xavi m'a convaincue... ... read more

A little further along the Lyell Highway we come to Lake St Clair National Park, which lies immediately south of Cradle Mountain and is where the Overland Track ends (or begins, depending on which way you walk it). It's pretty late in the day by the time we arrive, so we opt for a short walk along the shore of Lake St Clair. Compared to that of its twin park around Cradle Mountain, the scenery here is less striking, but this walk is going to give us our best opportunity yet to see the animal at the top of Alex's Most Wanted list - Ornithorhynchus anatinus, a.k.a. the duck-billed platypus. The gently sloping sandy lake shore, which gives way to woodland as you walk away from the water, are - according to the park guide - ... read more

Well I'm back in Melbourne now...but This is about my trip to Tasmaina. I arrived in Tasmaina on Nov 28th and the town was dead when I got in...not a great first impression. Although it was around 11pm on a tues night...but still I dont know what I was expecting. I stayed at the Pickled Frog...which was a great hostel.. I met a friend in the bathroom called Silke from Germany...I dont know what it is with Germans and me...but I like 'em and they like me. So we decided to go to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory the next day. We saved alot of money by taking public transit wich was 4.50 aus return...and only 12 bucks for the 1 hour tour. We had to take everything off...like earrings etc. I had to wear a blue ... read more

At long last I have met my little nephew!!! I met them at the airport - lunchtime. A very bedraggled "Janet and John" (always have to have a giggle at that !!!!) turned up in the arrivals lounge with a very alert Josh - bright eyed and bushy tailed. I drove them all to our little house in the mountains and they did manage to last a few hours before tiredness overcame them and they piled off to bed. They had had a good journey and Josh had slept - but it is long enough to kill off the most travel-keen of people!!!! The following few days were pretty much spent with them re-cuperating, though we did manage a few walks on the Pipeline Track near our house - including one up to Silver Falls - ... read more

Nov 13th - Nov 27th - I arrived in the morning and had no problems getting the shuttle to my hostel (YHA Montgomery's). The weather is a real shock to the system, it is soooo cold, 9 degrees, and showers. Spent my first day shopping for some warmer and waterproof clothing, which is going to be essential over the next two weeks as I am joining Adventure tours on a trip of the West Coast and East coast of Tasmania, this will involve alot of trekking and sleeping in various accomodations. The countryside looks very beautiful and picturesque, Mt Wellington overlooks Hobart, multicoloured roofed houses built in the hillsides and the Tasman Bridge over the river Derwent. On my second day I took a trip to nearby Richmond, what a beautiful little village in the countryside ... read more
