have just come home from watching one of our deaf students taking part in a professional "dance" tour-"Tasdance" - "Whitelight". I could not be more amazed. Had you not known that he was deaf, you would never have thought it in a million years. He was perfectly in time and he looked incredibly professional. It fills me with awe that some of the young deaf people, with whom I have a lot of contact, faced with the most amazing life-challenges, excel in such an incredible way. One door closes, another opens. Jarran might not be able to hear the music, but he can feel the vibration of the music, watch the others closely and he has proved that he is every bit as capable as the other young people in the group. He is very ... read more

So we got up a little later than expected, packed the car and kissed the kids goodbye and headed back to Hobart. The trp was only about 3.5 hours without stops and was quite uneventful. We did battle some rain on the way as the temps are cooler and the north is getting a reasonable amount of rain. Getting into Hobart about 2.30ish (we stopped for lunch on the way) we drove around a bit trying to find the hotel which is hidden on a side street. The hotel is quite nice and heritage listed. We then wandered over to the Hotel Grand Chancellor to book into the Conference and then detoured to look around the town for an hour or so. Then we headed back to the hotel where we settled in to have a ... read more

The bus back to Launceston was about 3 hours and we had to spend another night there to make a connection with our bus back to Hobart. After checking into the hostel we headed into town feeling we had earned a few pints after the previous days trekking. It was an Irish pub we ventured upon that seemed to be showing signs of life (It was Saturday night) so we stopped there. After a few jars we headed back to the pub we had found the last time we had been in Launceston. It was very different from the sleepy weekday we had been there and was packed by the time we left. Clearly not locals and looking out of place we ended up talking with some very random folk before calling it a reasonably early ... read more

Well............we have been a week back at work. Time is flying past - we realised that we have been here a whole year. We love the place more than ever and it has been great to have a consistent stream of visitors..it makes the world seem a whole lot smaller than it actually is. Blimey - what a mad time we had with Ivor's folks. We went everywhere and did everything. They have so much energy - neither of us could keep up. Whilst they were here it was actually the Easter holidays - so we were lucky enough to go away for a while. We decided to go across to the West Coast- where I had never been before. We went across to Tarraleah to start with - and on the way, went for a ... read more

We took a tram from Brad's house into Melbourne city centre and then got the bus out to Tullamarine airport. The flight was grand and we transferred from Hobart airport to our hostel in one of the cities main streets. Hobart is the Tasmanian state capital and is Australia's second oldest city and is thus full of beautiful old buildings. It was approaching evening time when we arrived so we made a beeline for the city's tourist office. We got some info and planned to climb Mount Wellington which sits overlooking the city the following day. We did a little walking tour of the small city centre seeing some of the wonderful architecture, as well as Arthur's Circle and the commemorative Abel Tasman fountain (The first known European to reach Tasmania). We walked around the oldest ... read more

I know........I know ........... 2 emails in 2 days but I have finally got some time to spend with you First of all when I read the note from yesterday, it sounded to me like I was not happy ... I am just very tired from the 7 day flying trip of Tassie. I am currently spending 3 days in Hobart - the capital and doing day trips that are not as exciting or as tiring!! The first thing one needs to know is that the fish is really fresh and delicious - have been trying a different kind every day. My first night back in Hobart all the travel group met for a send off supper and as Mama I got free drinks - then had to walk back to the hostel - Francesca and ... read more

Well, it has been about 10 days siince we last talked and it has been interesting - Firstly, this is the first interet that has not been $10 per hr to use and that has high speed - are we getting a picture yet?? After I talked to you all last Monday, I went back to my hostel after eating some very greasy KFC and flaked out - decided to empty the suitcase and only take 7 days worth of stuff with me - had bought a quick dry towel in NZ because the other took so long to dry but it doesn't go around me so the flight from the shower back to the room has to be quick- and no it didn't fit last week either!! The nicest thing that I have learned about ... read more

sarah leonard The Sky Above Our House Ivor's folks have arrived. My family went home a couple of weeks ago and I was still feeling a little homesick - but the distraction of their arrival has been really good and my homesickness has worn off a bit. Ivor's parents have had a great trip and have come down to us via Thailand, Singapore and then Darwin. They caught the train from Darwin to Adelaide where they met up with Sharon's parents (we should re-name Sharon and her family the "Leonard Support Services" as they have looked after both mine and Ivor's relatives in both Melbourne and Adelaide) They arrived pretty shattered - and we have many plans of things to do..........maybe a fifth visit to Port Arthur!!!!? Our possum made an appearance the first night ... read more

In that I have now visited all the states of Australia, unless there is another one that I have not heard of but I don't think so, put it this way I'm not going to go and visit any dependencies. Had to arise at 3am to walk through a not yet asleep Melbourne to get the Skybus and my early flight over to Tasmania, all pretty painless though, I can't speak highly enough of my comftable, hasslefree flight with JetStar (Qantas's no frills wing) so that's a recomendation, only 80 bucks too. Took the easy 12 dollar bus from the airport (18kms away) into the CBD and arrived at the City Cental hostel on Collins street, bang in the middle of town. had to wait until 1am to get my room so went for a good ... read more
