This is a warning to anyone planning to do the same as us, staying in Rockhampton a couple of nights to break up the journey from Hervey Bay to Airlee beach - DONT. Luckily we only ended up staying 1 night, there is nothing to do here and it is a hillbilly town. The people are weird and its like stepping back in a time machine. Thats all there is to say about that!... read more

We said goodbye to the Unsers late on Saturday night. We had had a wonderful time catching up with them, and we thank them for their hospitality, tour guidance, and friendship. They even tolerated Dean’s many stupid American questions, such as how Australia Rules Football and its sporting cousin Rugby Union and its sister Rugby League all work. Australians are passionate about their sports! On 8/31 we left the Unser homestead and headed north through Brisbane and on to Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. We finally saw many kangaroos and koalas. We fed the kangaroos and we were able to touch the koalas. The zoo has many crocodiles on exhibit as well. We did not pet or feed them! It is a very nice zoo, and we enjoyed our time there. We headed up the road a ... read more

Town of the butcher's industry. In every main entrance road of this town, huge plastic bulls symbolize the town's connection to this industry. The hostel I had there was the most relaxed and easy-going one I had so far; thanks to the owner, and his unshockable female clerk. As not many backpackers stayed during this season, we had many very nice chats with beers in the evening. During my stay in Rocky I visited the botanical garden and the adjacent zoo there (many species!!!), visited the diocese's main church and booked a tour through a nearby former gold mine. There we were driven in a small bus through the little village, which had the charm of an ancient gold-rush town in the 1850s. We were also shown the negative side effects of gold washing: mercury all ... read more

16th July 2008 Torrential rain last night. They rarely see rain here so everyone is very happy! I made a cheese toastie on the campfire this morning it was soo good! Mmmm. Amy and Hannah joined me to milk the cows and then Amy and Hannah collected eggs from the chicken pen. Amy and Hannah are off to go horse riding this morning. I'll give it a miss - yes even with my newly accquired horse whispering techniques! After lunch Amy was allowed to bike round the farm. I decided to join in on another lesson to see if I could get any better. I did 2 laps of the track and then gave up - Trevor agreed it was for the best. I just can't get to grips with changing gear. After taking lots ... read more

14th July 2008 - Myella Farm Stay in Barabela We got picked up from our hostel ealry in the morning and then picked up Hannah from Sweden who arrived late on her Greyhound bus. After an hour we arrived at Myella Farm which is pretty much almost in the outback - it is just the beginning of the red dust which you get in the centre of Oz. First thing we were shown was how to cook toast on the campfire and how to pour the water from the kettles that hang over the fire 24/7. We had to change into old farm clothes for the day - very flattering! We had brekkie and then we were taken to the stables where we were given a horse for the duration of our stay. My horse ... read more

15th July 2008 This may sound strange but I've always wanted to milk a cow and today is the day...hurrah! You have to get up at 6.30 am at Myella and have had brekkie and be in your farm clothes by 7 am ready for work. I got to milk my cow although there wasnt much milk as the cows had been with their calves over night, but I got in some practise. I had decided not to go riding today but Amy and Hannah managed to convince me it would be ok. Barnaby was pretty well behaved, although we found out that McCafferty, Trigger and Barnaby were all kicking horses and didnt like each other. We had a slight incident between Amy's horse and mine at a drinking trough but we managed to calm ... read more

11th, 12th and 13th July 2008 - Airlie Beach to Rockhampton I'm just going to gloss over the next few days as I am a bit behind with the blog and nothing amazing happended over these days. The only bit of excitement we had was when a man came into our dorm at 1.30am, used the toilet, switched the main light on, and then walked out, we followed him down the corridor and asked him what the hell he was doing as our door had been locked, he just walked away yelling obsenities. He hadnt stolen anything, we think he was just looking for a free bed for the night! On the 12th July we decided to get the night bus to Rockhampton to save on accomodation. Don't think we'll be doing this again as ... read more

Hi everyone, another day trip for Don yesterday, school children from Rockhampton visited Mount Morgan Mine itself. There is a daily visit available in Mt Morgan, I had been holding off going on it, but now that Brownie has seen it already, I shall have to go on the tour myself. The mine itself closed in 1989, but hopefully later this year, it is going to be re-opened, apparently there is still plenty of gold in them there hills!!!!... read more

Hello! 16.6. Abfahrt Brisbane. VOll Cooles Hostel. Surfen - - - ... read more

Our Stop Off In Rocky So, because of the miscalculation in our schedule (we'd been told that our Whitsundays trip left on the Sunday instead of the Monday) we had an extra day to kill before our next trip at Airlie Beach. We had an option to either spend the extra day at Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach or anywhere in between. We opted for in between. Browsing through the Lonely Planet, we noticed an entry for a town called Rockhampton and that in this town you could go to the Dreamtime Cultural Centre for an Aboriginal tour which included boomerang throwing. This sounded like fun, looked like a good way to spend our extra day and would also break up the journey between Hervey Bay and Airlie Beach. The bus left at around midnight so it ... read more
