The trip from Airlie to Rockhampton took about 5 hours, blaahhh. We listened to some songs by the comedian Stephen Lynch, which kept me awake and laughing. We were staying at the YHA in Rockhampton, a sleepy town that stretches over a river. Our room was 8 beds/4 bunk beds. Let me just tell you, sharing a room with 5 guys is faaaantastic. No sarcasm there at all... We played the obligatory game of shithead that night and then walked into town to the Bush Inn because the boys really wanted a steak. Rockhampton is famous for its beef and it is said there is 2 million cows in the area. The menu at Bush Inn was too expensive for me so I decided to walk out into the night to find food. Easier said than ... read more

So we headed down to rockhapton, the beef capitol of australia, unfortunatly no beef was eaten here as everywhere was shut when we walked through town. We saw about a million jellyfish though on the bridge which put steve off swimming even more then before!! Luckily we were only using here as a pit stop for our farmstay. We got an early morning transfer from the hosle and headed on an hour n half drive to the outback. When we got there we got kitted out for the horse riding then met our horses. I got a pretty fiesty arab with a bubba gump lip and steve got the most laid back lazy horse ever (perfect match, so alike!!). After a quick practice of the basics on a fake cow with a saddle it was time ... read more

Rocky and Reaching my Destination Towards the end, I couldn't wait to get off the good ship Whitehaven. The Kiwi skipper fulfilled his job description with an awfully trite speech: "I hope you had a great time because I know we had a great time!". We all just stared at each other blankly but he kept going wihilst I wanted to jump overboard... it was excruciating... I've never wanted something so bad to end. Escaping the boat and back on shore Heather, Anne and I were more than ready for lunch. We stopped off at the Magnum B and had, (it never ceases to amaze me here) fish and chips - yes those fish ‘n’ chips and even served by an English lad. Anne soon left to catch her flight to New Zealand so Heather and ... read more

Having seen most of what Hervey Bay (God’s waiting room is what the locals call it!) has to offer we had another dinner of microwave popcorn and set off in search of our next beachfront campsite. After studying the maps and all the information leaflets we made our way a bit further along the Bruce Highway to the town of 1770. There’s not really much going on in 1770, it’s the size of a postage stamp but luckily we called ahead and managed to get the last spot in the only campsite there which had a lovely beach where about 10 pelicans would congregate just before sunset - picture postcard stuff. We didn’t really do that much in 1770 except sit on the beach reading and improve our camp cooking skills, we did however have some ... read more

Rod and the kids had a swim in the heated pool at Proserpine, right next to the caravan park, while I uploaded the travelblogs and recharged the computer at the camp kitchen. Drove out to Dingo Beach, a little secluded beach town with its own stinger net for swimming in the summer. On the way to Airlie Beach, we drove through Cannonvale, well it is positively huge compared to Proserpine. It has 2 shopping complexes and it’s own industrial area, as well as a beach. At Airlie Beach we found a park for the car and camper (no easy feat) and wandered around the shops. Kate & I got a headband each, Kate a vase and Alex his hatpin. Down towards Mackay and turned off at Marian, through Finch Hatton (a cute little town) to Eungella. ... read more

We stayed in a place called Rockhampton last night, it is known as the beef capital of Australia; there are over 1 million cows in the surrounding area. The evening was pretty uneventful; we just pulled up at a caravan park for the night so I’ll just move on. Today we went to the Bundaberg Factory and it was wicked! Bundaberg is an Australian made rum that we have been drinking since we got here (Bundy and coke), and we love it! When we saw that Bundaberg was only a little out of our way on the map we thought we just have to go there! The tour was really very good; we got to see all working parts of the factory and so we were not allowed to bring any mobile phones or anything with ... read more

Day 74 - Cania Gorge to Byfield State Forest via Biloela, Gladstone and Rockhampton! The day started clear and bright but mighty cold! Lordy, Lordy! We were surprised to see our neighbours still there when we finally dragged ourselves out of bed just after 7am, they were supposed to be setting off early but it looked like the cold morning at caught them out too! It’s great to be on a caravan park when you’re in need of a hot shower but with water in such short supply out here they exercise the ‘light spray’ option so we’d probably have a better one with the solar shower … although not this morning as it’s too cold!! We’ve been told that Mount Morgan is a fantastic oldy, worldy mining town and as it’s on the way to ... read more

Hervey Bay - Rockhampton A long drive again as we drive 380km from Hervey Bay to Rockhampton. The journey nearly doesn’t start at all after Greg whacks the car against a high kerb on the way into the supermarket car park. In typical Nikki style, I take a bit of a strop as I panic Greg has wrecked the tyre and we will have to buy a new one. Luckily it is okay, and we continue on, albeit in silence for the first hour as I try to calm down. Things get a bit hairy for poor Trixiebell as we get detoured through a slippery dirt track road for a few kilometers, but like a true pro she battles on through. Half way there we stop in at a revive stop where they give you free ... read more
