Today was a fixing things up day again. Barry found a small plastic lug under the fridge and discovered it fits into the bracket that supports the fridge door and takes the weight off the hinges while we jiggle up and down during travel. Only little but doing an important job so it will need replacing. He is still trying to narrow down the battery problem, too. After charging the rear battery all night it seemed to be full but was boiling and the case was hot. It looks like we need a new one. He doesn’t want to replace it until he’s confirmed that the wires and relays are working OK or we’ll still have trouble, which we don’t want in more remote places where we stand no chance of getting parts. We were directed ... read more

We both slept in until 11am and decided we needed a rest day so we didn’t do anything much today. We did have a short walk around the Van Park and watch the birds. We then looked at the camp shop and bought an ice lolly each. As we walked back to the van we passed two birds in the paddock beside us, standing frozen, not moving a muscle. On investigation in the bird book, we think we’ve identified them as Bush Stone-Curlews, which is a vulnerable species. The freezing behaviour was the key. We’d noticed that the house batteries were very low after the long drive yesterday, which means the rear battery in the ute was not charging them as it’s supposed to. Barry set about trying to identify the problem, a slow process of ... read more

Early in the morning we took the ferry back to mainland and went back to the road. Our first stop at this day was in childers. No special town. Our lunch break was at a cattle ranch. We got a good buffet with their beef (www.creedgrazing.com.au). It is a family business. The grandchildrens school is 20 km away. They have small rooms for guests and an own airport for little planes. We visited the main house and their pets in the garden: they have seven kangaroos. In Rockhampton we crossed the border between subtropic and tropic. We visited the Botanic Garden. Next stop our hotel. There are a lot of lorys. They are very loud. I walked along river Fitzroy and in the trees were lorys and I walked into the town (rolled up sidewalks) and ... read more

It was tough but it was time to leave the Sunshine Coast as our holidays were drawing to a close and we had to head on back to the Northern Territory, where hopefully we would be in for a busy Dry Season so at 1000 we fired up the car and were northward bound. A decision had not been made as to our route home until about an hour before our departure. It is nice sometimes to not be too regimented and go with the flow however some careful considerations needed to be taken. I like to watch the weather when travelling fairly closely because particularly in the Tropics at this time of year many factors can influence your journey. Cyclones can still form at this time of year and in fact they are expecting one ... read more

Départ de Brisbane à 9h35, ... read more

In the recent Federal Election, Queensland campaigned heavily for improved roads. It has not been hard to understand why. Today’s drive was much smoother than yesterday’s lumpy, bumpy, jumpy drive. However it was still very clear the damage frequent heavy rain, flooding and large heavy vehicles inflict on the roads. Road signs often indicated the state of many main highways. At this stage all seemed to be ‘Open’. As we joined the road to Banana the sign said ‘Caution.’ What exactly does that mean? We couldn’t see any smoke that might indicate a bushfire so we proceeded with caution as suggested. Not far down the road we came across a ‘Roadwork in Progress’ sign. Roadwork for the next 80km. Really! Well, actually, yes really! As it turned out it wasn’t too bad. Towing a caravan means ... read more

With an ‘Extreme Fire Danger’ weather warning for the Darling Downs, we opted for an early start to avoid the heat and winds that strengthen as the day progresses. We were on the road by 6:35am. This wasn’t difficult as hoards of honey eaters noisily fed in the nearby flowering silky oak at the crack of dawn and heavy vehicles began thundering up the streets as the daily mining routines began. Our next destination was Theodore Junction at the small town of Theodore. This free camp/community site is run by the local Lion’s club. A lovely grassed area with BBQs, picnic tables, shady trees and water access is an attractive site for many grey nomads as they pass through this area of Queensland. An amenities block with toilets and hot showers are provided for use for ... read more

We have reached the Tropic of Capricorn not that one would notice cause its still blooming cold especially the evenings. Have only sat outside once so far with our sweet camping table which is pretty crazy to say the least. Went surfing (see photo. I know even for me it was a no wave situation but hey I am standing) at the last spot before heading into weird territory of absolutely no waves, hardly any water to be seen at low tide, crocs and stinger warnings. And cause no local wants to commit in saying its safe to swim, we are chickening out. Had a great kayak session near Yeppon yesterday and saw heaps of "maybe" crocs in water. Now in Rocky to get some springs fitted for camper so we can oodle and doodle over ... read more

Well, SOMEONE'S got to need to be in Rockhampton! Motoguzzi man, a '10 pound pom' I met 2 hours north of here says you can't get a decent steak here in spite of its being the 'beef capital' of Oz. He now lives in Bunderberg so I suppose he should know. Infact it's much prettier than the Lonely Planet suggests inspite of drizzle and outsize steaks. This is my 1st internet access in Oz since Townsville. Mostly because I arrive in small towns late in the afternoon, a shade frazzled and after getting hozed down it's gone 5pm and any internet cafes that there may be are closed. However you've not missed too much in the last week or so. I've recovered from a bug or something which clobbered my appatite more than anything but still ... read more
