ToothyToothyToothy

A fine reptile waiting to devour us.
We said goodbye to the Unsers late on Saturday night. We had had a wonderful time catching up with them, and we thank them for their hospitality, tour guidance, and friendship. They even tolerated Dean’s many stupid American questions, such as how Australia Rules Football and its sporting cousin Rugby Union and its sister Rugby League all work. Australians are passionate about their sports! On 8/31 we left the Unser homestead and headed north through Brisbane and on to Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. We finally saw many kangaroos and koalas. We fed the kangaroos and we were able to touch the koalas. The zoo has many crocodiles on exhibit as well. We did not pet or feed them! It is a very nice zoo, and we enjoyed our time there. We headed up the road a few hours to Hervey Bay where we have decided to spend an extra day so we can go whale watching. We have found that my driving estimates are way off because the flow is closer to 80km/h (48 mph) on average rather than the 100km/h (60 mph) that I had estimated. The good news is that the RV gets better fuel mileage than I had

estimated. Since we are paying about $6 per gallon for diesel, this is good news indeed.

We began September with a day on the waters at Hervey Bay for a whale watching cruise. There were so many whales the crew called it “whale soup.” We saw many southern humpbacks and a lot of bottlenose dolphins. It was a great day of wildlife viewing. On 9/2 we ended up driving most of the day. We are now in the town of Rockhampton, which is about 1200 km from Cairns (our northern destination). 9/3 will be a full day of driving. Driving on the left side is somewhat routine now. By the way, we have discovered some wonderful chocolate covered biscuit cookies called TimTams. We are devouring a package a day.
