Hervey bay is great great great, we have even extended our time here. First day we got bikes out to take a look around......we were on them all day! God knows how far we went, and yes we were very sore again like in NZ but we got to see alot of places and spend time on the lovely beach. See picture of Jetty, the weather here is just fantastic. The next day we did the long awaited whale watching, we tried to do it in NZ but didnt get time, however, we are glad we didnt as Hervey bay is home of the humbacks and a great place to do it. We boarded the boat at 1.00pm had a good lunch aboard the boat and we had to travel 2 hours out to sea, before ... read more

Went on a 3-day 4WD safari on the brilliant Fraser Island - the world's largest sand island. And when I say large, I mean more than just a piddly sandspit in the middle of the ocean! It's 123km long, has an area of 184,000 hectares and it's sand dunes reach heights of 200m! (don't you love my geeky facts) Set off in 2 cars of 8, picking up our shopping list and booze on the way. Luckily had a really great group of 16 - mostly Brits, the usual funny Irish guys, some Americans to make fun of, the token Geordie joker and a few Europeans, including Germans who are always a bit weird! Was brilliant driving through the sand and on some rough terrain - must admit the boys were the better drivers! Highlights included: ... read more

Hervey Bay is famous for migrating Humpback whales at this time of year - about 3000 come and just hang out in the area on their way south, so spent the most amazing day on a whale watching trip. Saw a mother and baby whale - the mother lying on its back, flapping its huge fins up and down, while the baby breached (leaped out of the air) about 20 times in a row - absolutely amazing. We then even got to see a dead whale that had died the day before, and was being feasted upon by about 8 huuuuge 3m tiger sharks - the sharks were coming right out of the water and chomping on the whale flesh - was definitely something you wouldn't ever get to see unless it was on a nature ... read more

Hello again... time for the next update on our travels so far... We've just returned from a cracking whale watching trip in Hervey Bay Queensland, so I write this with a slight grin and stupid red nose (apparently there's no ozone layer or something) - anyway more of that later. First piece of news to fill you in with is that Sarah's insides have now recovered after a couple of days couped up on 3 planes (Hanoi-Bangkok-Singapore-Bali) and bedridden in a nice hotel we found in Kuta (Bali). A few antibiotics and some less evil bacteria-ridden food later and the bugs were gone. Our first stop after Vietnam and our last blog was Bali. Now we could have sat here and told you all about the culture of Bali, the traditional villages and tales of treks ... read more

After a fantastic time in Airlie beach..we drove a mere 800km drive south to Hervey Bay. We were traveling with a (crazy) couple from London, who also had a camper, so spirits were high. Fraser Isalnd...oggy oggy oggy!! After three long driving days (passing through Mackay, Sarina, Clairview, Malbourough, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg & Childers) we arrived. It was slamming down with rain, so yet again we waited 3-4 days for the weather to clear. Many people who went to Fraser at this time told us that the weather was seriously ferocious, some even experienced a tornado!! they couldn't leave the van, which also means they couldn't cook, trek, swim, etc..So it was a good call to wait for better weather. During this time Ally von beavercatcher and I went Whale watching aboard the 'Tasman Venture'. We ... read more

So, another day, another blog!! I've just been on a 3 day jeep safari of Fraser Island, the worlds' largest sand island. Got to drive around in big toyota landcruisers with 9 other people and generally have a laugh. On the first day we went to lake Mckenzie. Beautiful white sands, crystal clear, blue, fresh water. At one point we saw 5 people swimming accross the lake. Although they were about half way, foolishly claimed that I could still beat them to the other side, forgetting that I stopped training a good 9 years ago!!! "Go on then" was the unsurprising response. So I did. Hurrah for me! It was a lot further than it looked though.... First night was particularly entertaining. We camped up near another group from a rival company, who had much flimsier ... read more

Fraser Island Having being told that it is sunny on Fraser Island 360 days of the year, you might think it was not unreasonable to expect some sunshine...but no, we must've seen the only 3 days of rain for the whole year... and it rained enough in those 3 days to keep the population from drought for the next 3 years. And so our group of 10 - myself, Thomas, Louise & Oonagh from Fermanagh, Stu & Jill (soon to be) from Virginia, Nathan, Beverley, Laura and Tash from England - met up at 6.30am for our "briefing" which consisted of a supervised alcochol purchase from the agents convenient bottleshop around the corner and some food shopping, some warnings about dingos and riding the clutch from our 4WD company, and the rest was up to us! ... read more

Well what can I say to anyone wishing to jump in OZ! To start with if your looking for a tandem jump there are so many up the east coast you'll get lost choosing which one. I would suggest that of all the ones I've spoken to so far on the east coast, go for Harvey Bay as its a pretty small DZ and the guys there are very experienced and you'll get a trip of your life with great fottage at a good prise. As with most you'll have the choise for a beach landing. As for sports skydiving I've jumped in Ramblers and Harvey Bay so far. Ramblers is quite a commerical DZ in it's operation and facilities. Check out thier web page. The staff are great and friendly as with most DZs but ... read more

The last week has been spent in Hervey Bay. We came to see the whales, as they migrate up the east coast to give birth in warmer waters, and as usual ended up staying a while!! (At this rate we'll only get up the east coast) So we went out on Blue Dolphin II to see if we could see any whales. And boy, did we see whales! We lost count after a while with whales basically surrounding the boat. They were totally amazing and came within inches of the boat. They put on an excellent show for us and we were able to get some wicked pictures. Can't really say anything else to describe the experience - its definately one we recommend. And we would recommend the boat we went on. the crew made the ... read more
