Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

After a few hiccups we collected our campervan from Cairns & headed straight for Port Douglas. This was to be the hub for our activities over the next few days. Being the closest town to the Great Barrier Reef, it is easy to know what Port Douglas is famous for! This pretty little village caters well for the many tourists & campervans. It is located at one end of a four mile beach. On our first night we enjoyed some Cane Toad Racing at 'The Iron Bar' This is a fun family event held every evening at 7.30pm. Six tourists picked [View Full Entry]

My last weekend in Melbourne (before flying to Cairns) was heaps fun!!! The Friday after classes got out Sam and I went to Melbourne's Brighton Beach which is famous for their bright, colorful "beach boxes" that people own with views of downtown Melbourne. If and when they go for sale you can purchase this little square box for about $250,000! That night we met up with some of my friends I met through Young Life and went to the sold out Australia vs. India cricket game! It was a big deal with fireworks and all and apparently was a fast game [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, we've done quite a bit since our last blog so here goes.... We tore ourselves away from our beloved Melbourne, we've both decided that we absolutely have to go back because it's so awesome. On our last couple of days we chilled out in the Botanic Gardens, went to the Ian Potter Centre for Aussie Art and went to the Museum (v. sadly the Neighbours set had been taken away!!) So with a sad farewell we got on our flight and jetted up to Cairns. As we got off the plane we were hit with the most incredible humidity, [View Full Entry]

The Beautiful great barrier reef!!
Wistari Reef...

The sun was hot, the sky was blue. Our vessel "Ocean Quest" left the pier at 9am to take us to the Great Barrier Reef for a day of snorkeling. The journey started out fine, but after the 90 minute open water voyage, the Reef was "swell"!! We were suited up with our snorkeling gear and splashed into the water! The ocean was super warm and our wetsuits even warmer! The water was very choppy and the swells were very large. The poor boy didn't fair too well. After about 40 minutes in the water, we headed back to the boat [View Full Entry]

We did three dives on the Barrier Reef and though there seemed to be less fish here than in thailand the coral etc was different and really pretty. There were some really cool coral caves to navigate through which was amzing - as you swam through you could look up and see the light streaming through the rock face - very nice! Saw a reef shark but only a baby (though Justin will probably tell you it was 12 metres long) and various other marine life but generally the coral was the most impressive.... Went to Johnstones Crocodile farm the next [View Full Entry]

The road towards the East Coast from Alice is quite uneventful. We passed a small town called Tennants Creek where we stayed for a night. Whilst there we had some entertainment from a bushtuckerman called Jimmy. He was a bit like Ray Mears, and told us stories of the bush, and about what plants you can survive on out in the bush. We all sat around a campfire and drank some bush tea which was ok, and had some ozzy bread, which they call damper. This was gorgeous with a bit of golden syrup! The next day we crossed the NT [View Full Entry]

Right, The start of my australian adventure was a rather wet one in more ways than is obvious form the photos. We flew into Cairns after a stop over in Darwin (meaning we couldn't take advantage of the ridiculously cheap booze at the duty free in Singapore -not a good start Oz, not good at all). When we finally arrived in cairns we thought we were part of an australian iniitiative to give all visiting brits a taste of their history -in that we were treated live convicts. For the simple fact that we were brits, travelling to Oz with absolutely [View Full Entry]
