July 27, I have decided to really slow it down and just do an afternoon horseback ride. Then that leaves the evening open and the morning open to sleep in a little resort my things. Plus I have not yet had a night out I have been so tired that it just wasn't going to happen. The trip to the horse farm takes over an hour cause we have to go up the coast to pick people then drive back down. But we finally get there and I love to ride horses. It's a great match from the start. Alfie my horse was an outback mustang who was caught and put on the farm. So my wild nature fits real good with Alfie. He's a silver with a little black and not quite an Arabian stallion, ... read more

July 26, 2011 Sitting in the hostel office last night talking to John and Kerry about I should do today, we decided what I needed was a day with Uncle Brian. I needed a break from the reef . Uncle Brian is a little strange but loads of fun. I can't wait to meet the family. Uncle Brian is a tour of the rainforest, the Atherton tablelands and swimming like no other tour around. They promise fun, food and waterfalls with little to no effort. SIGN ME UP! At 8:00 AM Cousin Brad picks me up in Gus the Bus and 20 other cousins for the day. It's a family bus so we are all family for the next 12 hours. Our family heads south out of Cairns and travel through the small village of Babinda ... read more

Traveling with the Passions of Paradise in their sailboat/catamaran out to Michaelmas Cay, a bird sancturary and to Paradise Reef today. The day is just beautiful! A perfect day for snorkeling. On the water for about 30 minutes when whale spouts are spotted but too far away. Then a few minutes later we finally get to see a humpback whale emerge from the water several times and we get a good look at it. Awesome! Standing at the railing I talk with the young man standing next to me, sounds American and I ask where he's from, can you believe Cincinnati!! So we talk a little bit about OSU and Tressel. He's here on holiday with his Dad after spending a year in China, teaching Englisih and learning Chinese. After 10 days touring with Dad he ... read more

July 24th, 2011 The day couldn't have been any better, in the 70's bright partly sunny day and I am on the Great Barrier Reef. Going to snorkeling in different locations at some of the fartherst points in the Outer Barrier Reef, next to the Continental Shelf. The boat is big, fast and well equipped. There are divers and snorkelers on board. We get morning tea, a big lunch, and afternoon tea. To rent a lycra body suit and the wet suit it is only $7.00 extra. The first real bargin since I've been here. The water is awesome and the fish amazing. There are no words to describe and the pictures are only able to show a fraction of the real beauty of the ocean and the coral reefs. I saw 2 turtles and neither ... read more

My flight is at 6:20 AM, the shuttle is at 4:50 and my alarm is set for 3:30. I am more than ready to leave Darwin. The city is noisy and busy. I like more of the outback towns of Alice Springs where it is more small town atmosphere. I make it to the airport 30 minutes before the flight and just to the boarding gate as they begin to board. First time on the no frills Jet Star. Trust me it is very budget. They don;t even have signs directing you to the plane. The walkway and steps lead to the outside and 2 planes are sitting there. I had to ask a ground crew member which plane was going to Cairns. He had to ask someone. Now I am a little worried about the ... read more

Last morning in the outback!!!!!! It has been such a wonderful time! But the best is yet to come, Litchfield is a much smaller national park but it is the most glorious for someone like me who loves the water. We vist Florence Falls this morning and only the guide Craig and myself and 3 of the kids hit the water. It is fantastic, pristine water hole carved in the stone by the river and the water falls cascading down on top of you. It's hard to swim to the waterfall because of the strong current but it can be done. We have to leave as the larger tour bus has arrived and the people are swarming all over the place. The 6 AM rise gave us first shot at the water hole in the relative ... read more

This morning we are still in the Kakadu National Park. There are some great natural sandstone formations that we can climb in the Gunlom Lookout Walk to get to a natural waterfall the feeds into a larger upper pool and down into lower pools. These are great swimming holes as they are cool, clear and croc free water. Not too much of that around here. It is such a relaxing morning and the weather is fantastic. We travel to the small mining town of Pine Creek and I transfer to the other tour that will take me on the last leg of my tour. There is gold in them there hills. The gold mining industry here in Australia is very strong and making their dollar stronger than ours for the first time ever this past year. ... read more

July 20th, 2011 Joining a new group today, 4 French speaking people on board from France and the island of Guadolope , they have an interpreter on board with his trainee. Then there is the main guide who is very very handsome. I will be spending 1 ½ days with this group before changing over to a different group. Like I said a very strange tour that is piece mealed together. The plan is to drive from Darwin to Kakadu ( kak a due) National Park. It's 20,000 square kilometers and belong to the Aboriginals. The ir ancestors believed that The Rainbow Serpent created the landscape in and around Kakadu. No mater who or what created the park it is stunning with the rock formations, varied habitats and the ranges of biodiversity has put this place ... read more

July 19TH The Gahn Train is named after the Afghan cameleers who once traveled this route. My travel from the Red Center of Australia will take me to the edge of the continent, at Darwin. This morning after a rocky night is a welcomed sight. I paid an extra 10.00 to use the lobby car. It have electrical plug access to charge my computer and free coffee and tea for the entire journey. I don't normally drink coffee but in order to stay awake this AM I am having espresso with milk and lots of sugar! The train stops in the town of Katherine just south of Darwin. There is a 5 hour layover and the option for many tours to see Katherine's Gorge. I decide not to take any. I have walked through so may ... read more

July 18th The last day in Alice Springs. I have nothing planned. I washed all of my clothes last night and had them sprawled all over the room. Mostly near the heater so they would all dry by morning. Check out is at 10 AM; I wait till the very last minute. Then take my bags to storage in the hotel. I hit the streets for souvenirs for my granddaughters and maybe me too! I find some things but can't tell you as it would not be a surprise when I get home. But they are cute little things the girls will love. For myself I buy a very functional Australia purse to carry little things while walking around. I buy a club sandwich to go; 8.50 for just the sandwich. Things here are very expensive. ... read more
