Fourth of July! The winds out on Great Barrier Reef had swayed us into waiting until our last full day before booking a trip to the reef. The tour company that we chose was an outfit named Quicksilver. They have a pontoon built in a lagoon on the Outer Reef that basically resembled a floating two story building. It had a seating area on the top and the bottom deck was equipped with changing rooms, a restaurant, more seating, areas to get outfitted for snorkeling and a small loading area for a semi-submersible glass-bottomed boat that toured around the reef. There was also access to an underwater viewing area. The boat ride was a bit choppy, but not too bad. Even at a relatively high speed, it still took us 90 minutes to reach the Outer ... read more

I didn't get eaten!! It's so fun diving by the way! definitely try it! ok, so was a tad nervous, I had to get up at 6am! go to the Reef Terminal and check in. Nerves were building...got on the boat which was amazing! and the crew were so friendly, then the guy says 'for those of you diving today please go to top deck for a safety talk etc' so off we went, and the girl doing the talk scared me soooo much. surely they are meant to reassure? all i picked up on was 'sharks yeah they're around' 'don't hold your breathe or your lungs will burst' 'it will feel very odd' 'lots of people panic' WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS?!?! crazy girl trying to scare me oh and there was 'your eyes ... read more

This past weekend I spent in Cairns and it was the first time I really went on my own. I travelled up with the Robson family but after they dropped me off at the hostel for the night that was it! (They did say that I was more than welcome to stay with them in their hotel room, but I really wanted to see what hostels were all about first hand so I could stop worrying about it). Well . . .lets back up, Monday Heather arrived from Perth, that was also the day we finally finished putting all of the camping stuff away, and the power went out! So out all the camping stuff came for dinner (which was Kangaroo chilli)! At least we were warm, dry, and mozzie free! The next night I got ... read more

WOW. Matt and I went on a big fancy snorkling trip to the reef and the word really is wow. I haven't ever been snorkling anywhere and fear I may never be able to go again unless it's here... It feels like a once in a lifetime moment the first time you put your head under and see the entire eco system that's otherwise totally invisible from the surface. All this despite my not really liking fish... but it was just unimaginably cool. We got to see three different reef sites, which was a little more expensive but well worth it. I don't think anything can top it - which is a bit of a bummer less than 2 weeks into our trip! The thing is - it really was just like Finding Nemo! We saw ... read more

C'est ... read more

... read more

We were up early this morning and no surprise here....rain again. But according to the weather reports today and tomorrow are the best days to go out as the knots were only 10-15 today out on the water. Quite a few people from our hotel were also going out on the same boat. A big bus came and picked us up and took us down to the harbour. We were on quite a big boat called the Quicksilver. A photographer took our picture before boarding the boat. We got settled and I grabbed an anti-seasickness tablet just incase. We got free tea, coffee and biscuits before the boat took off. We got to our first snorkeling stop after about an hour. We chose this company because they go to the outer edge of the great barrier ... read more

Today marks the end of our second week away and boy what a way to end it. WE were excited and apprehensive about our trip arguably the most beautiful part of the Great Barrier Reef. The weather was fine and forecast to get better as we set out on the fast cat with 67 other passengers to explore the reef led by a team of experts enthusiasts obsessed with the protection of the reef. After an hour we stopped for the round of snorkelling. We both found the conditions difficult and only spent about half an hour in the water most of it battling against the strong current to get back to the boat. The second stop was better – the tide was turning and more of the reef was exposed making the water calmer. This ... read more

After two flights from Perth to Brisbane to Cairns and a load of free alcohol, courtesy of Qantas, it was a Valentine's Day to remember (or remember parts of anyway). We arrived at the Caravalla Hostel at 11pm, where we were greeted by the legendary Gloria at the check in desk. This little fragile old lady, still had a spring in her step and plenty of sexual innuendos on her lips, hilarious. We threw our bags in the room, which we'd pre-booked for a special rate of $12 each per night. We even got our room upgraded as we'd arrived so late. Then we headed out into town to the Woolshed Bar, which was a huge backpacker hotspot. Cheap drinks, loud music and party people kept us going until the early hours. Jo even blagged a ... read more
