Great Barrier Reef Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

After our Reef adventure we decided to see a little more of the Australian landscape. We were in northern Queensland (northeast coastal area) and wanted to visit the Atherton Tableland. It is from there (50’s era Atherton Motel, home of the rare 24-hour internet access!) where I posted a blog entry last month. After circling counterclockwise from up north Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge, down to Antherton, then Yungaburra, and Crater Lake, we decided we really wanted another day out at the Reef. We had planned on a day in Yungaburra, but it really is a very small town that is [View Full Entry]

Took a 6 day diving course with 2 days of theory and pool diving followed by 4 days and 3 nights diving on the Great Barrier reef :) The theory part of the course went too fast and you didn't have time really to read the book and do you homework, but the practical part felt relaxed and felt like you had time to learn everything. For the Open Water course we were 10 people and 6 were swedish and just 2 germans. Was pretty easy and got to see most things in the water like turtles and sharks. During what [View Full Entry]

Got to the island which was is the middle of nowhere and the sand was so white and the water so blue it was amazing, hard to belive desolete places like this do actually exist. Dan went for his first intro dive and loved every minute of it, not much freaking out at all... Kel of course chickened out and chose to snorkel, which didn't happen since we ran out of time. The dreaded cassowary! It is like a bird dinosaur - endangered and very dangerous. If you don't back away slowly if you run into one, it can actually disembowel you! AH!

We arrived in Cairns and booked ourselves into a lovely hostel...really chilled out and had a few days hanging out, shopping and planning our last two weeks in Australia. We arrived in Cairns two weeks early than we planned to be there so we had to go back to the LP and travel agencies and fill our next two weeks with fun - filled things to do. I was looking into doing a day trip on the Great Barrier Reef but David and I talked about it and we had just had such an amazing time on the Whit Sunday cruise, [View Full Entry]

On the way to Cape Tribulation
It was so warm this day, I can't believe its still winter here!
I haven't updated you in a while, as my adventures are more local, and were getting as exciting as going out for dinner on my birthday (which actually did turn out to be quite memorable, as the waitress served us someone elses home-made birthday cake, that we ate without asking any questions, birthday candles, singing and all). More recently however, I went out to Lady Elliot Island, which is at the Southern-most tip of the Great Barrier reef, 80km East of Bundaberg for all of those familiar with your Australian Geography. My boss flew our staff out to the Island for [View Full Entry]

August 22, 2007 What a wonderful day. We were a little upset because all of the snorkel tours we wanted to do were all booked so we settled on another one, which turned out to be better. There were not many people on the boat compared to all the other boats in the Marina that looked like hardly any room to move around. We were on a sail boat and the only problem was really not that bad. We were on board with a group of Koreans and therefore everything was pretty much done in Korean before it was done in [View Full Entry]

Nemo

This was the moment I had been most looking forward to all trip, and it did not disappoint. I doubt I can even explain in words what an amazing experience this was, but I will do my best to try. Our purpose for the day: Snorkling on the Outer Reef. The boat ride was about 70 minutes, and we got to spend 5 hours on the reef, and visit 3 different reefs. As soon as we boarded the boat, there was an announcement that the crew "strongly recommended" taking some of their complimentary seasickness tablets. Vlad followed the recommendations, but Shilo [View Full Entry]

Oh my god I just don't even know where to begin. Today was definitely one of those days when you totally understand what travelling is all about - I've had the single most amazing experience of my travels! I got up ealy this morning and dropped back my car to the hire company, then I got my bits together (must also add I'd a bit of a late one last night with a whole host of nationalities) and went to catch a bus to the marina - which is about 2 minutes walk from where I'm staying. I met 2 [View Full Entry]
