We spent our first full day in Cairns exploring the Daintree Rainforest and river. For those that don't know, Daintree is considered to be the oldest rainforest in the world and is also the only place in the world where both wet and dry rainforests co-exist in such close proximity The day started at 7am with a drive up to Port Orchard. We then went on a cruise down the beautiful Daintree river (fyi, its brimming with crocs). Following the cruise we took a walk through the rainforest and got a lesson on all the plants and insects that call it home. We then went to a Kangroo/Wallaby refuge and were able to pet and feed some orphaned marsupials. After lunch we then went for a swim in the Daintree (in the croc free area). Finally ... read more

Today we took the Falcon X6 for a drive up the coast to Cape Tribulation. On our way up the coast we stopped at Mossman Gorge. There were quite a few people there to swim in the river, but when we headed off on the 2.4km rainforest loop we had it almost to ourselves! The strangler figs in this part of the rainforest were quite impressive with a couple of particularly large specimens. From the gorge we continued on to the Daintree River and made the ferry crossing to continue up as far as we could drive without a four wheel drive vehicle. We stopped at the Daintree Discovery Centre cafe for a quick bite to eat before driving the rest of the way up the coast. We opted not to go into the discovery centre ... read more

And so, here we are, deep in the beaudiful World Hewitage twopical wainforest of Daintwee situated in Far North Queensland Austwarlia. I am cuwwently sitting 45 metres below the twopical canopy, suwwounded by dense jangew cweepers , vines and cweepy cwarlies . . . (Scuse me?) . . . there is just such incwedible biodiversity here. The Daintwee wainforest contains 30% of fwog, (Scuse me? SCUSE ME? Look, if you’re thinking of doing the whole blog in a poor David Bellamy impersonation you can think again. After yesterday’s Jeau Coostarde fiasco, no-one will read it) Weally? (Really. Rrrr, rrr, rrrealy). Oh! So I’m going to be doing this one and it’s none negotiable. You say nothing and stay within the brackets. (Silence). Good . . . . and so: Here we are, deep in the beautiful ... read more

Australia's tropical rainforest is apparently the oldest continuously growing rainforest on earth - 150,000,000 years old.....or some shit like that. I wasn't really paying that much attention. I was looking out for snakes, crocs, birds, spiders, bugs, man-eating plants, horny kangaroos, and various other deadly creatures that I could take pictures of or make slippers out of. It's very hot, humid, drippy, muggy, sticky and wet - much like Toronto in August. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating place, located in the northeast region of the continent, right off the coast, north from about Cairns up to Daintree/Cape Tribulation (where the forest meets the reef). Just beautiful. BEAUTIFUL I tell ya! Going to start heading south now, down the entire east coast from Cape Tribulation to Sydney. Picking up the motorhome in a few hours, as a matter ... read more

9 Uur werden we wakker. ... read more

23-8-11 we arrived at the Pinnacles Caravan Park at Wanda Beach, $38 a night. We set up & had a swim in the pool & a walk on the beach; and enjoyed the Peacocks wandering around the park; we then met up with Tom & Di for a long happy hour. We travelled 253km today. 24-8-11 we went to the Daintree Ferry crossing & caught a cruise up the Daintree River, seeing lots of Crocodiles, birds & snakes. The cruise was $20 each & well worth it. We then crossed on the ferry, $22 return & made our way to The Discovery Centre at the Daintree, with an aerial walkway, tower & boardwalk around the forest. It was $28 each. The boys climbed the tower while we girls looked at the Discovery Centre. We then went ... read more

Since we were faced with a couple of days with potentially sketchy weather, we decided to head up north into the Daintree National Park. Daintree is a lush 110-million year old rainforest which escaped effects of the last Ice Age. An occasional shower actually positively adds to the rainforest ambiance. After about a half an hour of driving, we reached a cable ferry that crossed the Daintree River to get to the rain forest. After entering the park, we were presented with some odd signs. The signs were standard yellow diamond shapes, like you see in the states for deer crossings, but a strange looking bird was depicted on these signs. We thought it might be warnings for Emu crossing. Instead it was for the Cassowary, an odd looking flightless bird that reaches up to 6 ... read more
