Our last couple of days in New Zealand were spent hanging around in the City of Auckland - a port city spread out over hundreds of square miles of volcanoes - walking around, eating, shopping, and just generally wasting time. The journey was essentially coming to an end, and we were making the final preparations for the long flight home. Fortunately, we planned to break it up with an eight day stopover in French Polynesia (Tahiti), a place that I had always wanted to go. It's basically a series of small islands, the most popular being the main island of Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora. We visited all three. This is the quintessential paradise beach atmosphere, with turquoise waters, reefs, white sand, palm trees, blistering hot sun, blue skies, and very very quiet. It was the ... read more

Saying farewell to the South Island, we boarded the Interislander car ferry to make the 3 hour crossing through Marlborough Sound and Cook Straight over to the city of Wellington at the southern end of the North Island. In this part of the country, where the population is 3-1 compared to the south, the scenery is not as magnificent, but it's warmer, and there are endless beautiful beaches, nice little cities, and some fierce geothermal activity going on. The Bay of Plenty, on the east coast, is where the oil tanker/cargo ship ran aground, cracking in half and spilling its load of crude into the ocean. We can see its crippled carcass listing in the water just across from where we're currently situated. Disgusting. Somebody should MAKE THOSE BASTARDS PAY I tell ya! After spending some ... read more

Leaving Fjordland, making our way to the west coast, we crossed over the southern alps, and started to head north again. The first spectacle is glacier country, with the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Glaciers, next to rainforest, next to ocean. Amazing. Further up the coast, along a rollercoaster winding road like none I've ever experienced before, along the open ocean and through dense rainforest, there are the punakaiki rocks, another geological phenomenon. This is one of the most awesome coastal ocean drives imagineable.... read more

New Zealand - Fjordland

Southbound from Queenstown, we made our way to Te Anau - the gateway to Milford Sound, and Fjordland (or, as the Kiwis spell it, Fiordland - pronunciation of the English language is not the only thing they butcher). Every kilometre of the way is stunningly beautiful. One thing I've discovered is that in NZ, the journey is much better than the destination. That's not to say that the destination isn't amazing, but rather, the trip there is even better. Whatever. I'm just a babbling idiot. Pass the wine.... read more

New Zealand is like paradise on earth! Imagine every conceivable geographical and topographical phenomenon crammed into two tiny islands that look like the size of my baby toenail clippings on a world map. Unbelievable! This place has mountains, canyons, waterfalls, glaciers, fjords, rainforests, gorges, rivers, 33 million sheep (down from 80 million), geothermal hot springs, farmland, cities, wildlife, lakes, oceans, and beaches. A mecca for climbers, skiers, posers, shoppers, wannabes, hangers on, hang gliders, bungee jumpers, swimmers, rappelers, sailors, hikers, trampers, campers, fishermen, hunters, boaters, kayakers, naturalists, and gawkers. I gotta tell ya though....the people need a serious attitude adjustment. Australia is bigger and economically richer than you are. GET OVER IT! They'll never have what you have geographically, and you don't have a plethora of poisonous... read more

After over a week in Sydney, we got back on the road heading south/southeast on our way to complete the circuit started over 7 weeks ago. Ending up where we started, Melbourne, was a great way to end the Australian portion of this epic voyage. After all is said and done, we have to say that Melbourne was our favourite "big" city in Australia. We were also in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, and Canberra (as well as Alice Springs, Cairns, and Mackay along the way). While all of them have their unique charms and features, Melbourne really has it all - the skyline, the river, the nightlife, the shopping, the restaurants, the transit (trams and trains), the cafe scene, the culture, the sophistication, the people, the neighbourhoods - you name it. Great city. On the way back, there ... read more

Sydney is a pretty cool city. Besides the well known landmarks of the Sydney Opera House and The Harbour Bridge, the city also has some great neighbourhoods and a lot of character. We're staying at a house in Surrey Hills, next to Darlinghurst, walking distance from the city centre, great restaurants, coffee shops, shopping, parks, and all the freaks, weirdos, and disturbing cross section of humanity that you can imagine. Notwithstanding the junkies, winos, addicts, psychos, dirtbags, scumballs, people with varying opinions concerning sexual preferences, fashion choices, hairstyles, body art, body odour, religious beliefs, and pet ownership, it's a really great place to be based in. Hey, but that's just me. And what do I know? Check out the photos.... read more

We left the tropical climate of the rain forest, and headed south from Port Douglas in a camper van to explore the rest of Australia's east coast as we made our way toward Sydney. White sandy beaches grace almost the entire coastline, and a string of islands and coral reefs dangles just offshore. Interesting towns along the way, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast (which is the cheesiest, tackiest, ugliest crime ridden scum hole in Australia by the way), amazing rivers, fascinating wildlife, stunning capes, and a network of inlets and estuaries, make this road trek absolutely one of the most memorable continental drives in the world.... read more

Australia's tropical rainforest is apparently the oldest continuously growing rainforest on earth - 150,000,000 years old.....or some shit like that. I wasn't really paying that much attention. I was looking out for snakes, crocs, birds, spiders, bugs, man-eating plants, horny kangaroos, and various other deadly creatures that I could take pictures of or make slippers out of. It's very hot, humid, drippy, muggy, sticky and wet - much like Toronto in August. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating place, located in the northeast region of the continent, right off the coast, north from about Cairns up to Daintree/Cape Tribulation (where the forest meets the reef). Just beautiful. BEAUTIFUL I tell ya! Going to start heading south now, down the entire east coast from Cape Tribulation to Sydney. Picking up the motorhome in a few hours, as a matter ... read more

How ya goin' mates? Well, I think it's pretty common knowledge that the Great Barrier Reef is a wondrous place that needs no verbal description. It's been documented countless time for several decades, and I just consider myself lucky to have been able to hang out here for a while. I don't have my SCUBA divers' certification, which is a shame, considering the opportunities it would afford in this neck of the woods, so I did the next best thing, and went snorkeling in the reef. Fortunately, the sun was shining, which made it possible to see the fish and coral fairly clearly from a relatively shallow depth. I bought a small inexpensive waterproof camera in Melbourne just for this purpose (by the way, if ever in Melbourne, visit Michael's Cameras in the Central Business District ... read more
