Heading all the way to California this time. Stops in Arizona, Utah, and Las Vegas along the way. Made the proverbial Grand Canyon visit in Arizona, and went back to Zion National Park in Utah. They're just awesome places that can be seen over and over again. Heading to Vegas for a bit, then on to California from there. Had an interesting encounter with a rogue herd of Bison en route to Zion. They busted out of a fenced in range, and stampeded across the highway onto an open field, until a local cowboy came by and fired a few shots into the air to get their attention, and herded them back onto the ranch. Visited the Prudhoe Bay oilfields at the Arctic coast. After a nice walk on the "beach" and a dip in the Arctic Ocean (Beaufort Sea), we stayed overnight in Deadhorse at the oilfield's seismic workers' camp, then drove 2 days back down to Fairbanks along the Dalton Highway (800 km of dirt and gravel - nice!). Took a bus from Seward to Talkeetna. Talkeetna is a small outpost, mainly used as the gateway to Denali for mountain climbers and hikers. Took a flight to Mt. McKinley (Denali) from there, then took the train to Fairbanks, en route to the Arctic. Taking a flight to Prudhoe Bay in the Arctic tomorrow, then bussing it back 800 km across the tundra to Fairbanks along the Dalton Highway. ... read more
