The Australian Outback is yet another unbelievable part of this vast and diverse land. It's a living desert where the roads just go for endless miles. It's about a 3000km drive between Adelaide in South Australia up to Darwin at the top of the Northern Territory. There's a surprising amount of life out here - it's not just sand and rocks- from kangaroos and wild horses and wild camels and dingoes, to snakes and lizards and birds. There's also an abundance of pant life. When it rains, man, it POURS. Roads can be closed due to flash flooding, and rivers, which are nothing but dry sand beds for years and years, can suddenly come alive with raging flood waters. We were fortunate enough to see both sun and rain, especially in areas that it hasn't rained ... read more

Hey Now! Crossed over from the mainland to spend a couple of days on Kangaroo Island, in South Australia. It's a fairly primitive island, with relatively few amenities to speak of, and has a really remote feel even though it's only a 45 minute ferry ride off the coast. Once here though, you're in another world altogether. Typically, there's an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos, penguins, and koalas. However, due to the severe weather we ran into, all we got to see plenty of were Australian Sea Lions and New Zealand Fur Seals. The terrain and coastline are spectacular, and with the hurricane like winds, we got to witness the wrath of the Indian Ocean up close. The main scenic and wildlife areas are about a 150 km drive from the island's docking point, so there ... read more

Tasmania is a truly remarkable, relatively undiscovered paradise. It has everything! Mountains, rivers, ocean, waterfalls, secluded beaches, unusual wildlife, amazing scenery, great hiking trails, awesome riding roads, incredible seafood, and more. Freycinet National Park is the crown jewel of the state. And of course, REAL Tasmanian Devils! This island has come a long way since originally settled as a penal colony for British convicts a couple of hundred years ago. Most of the original British convicts are now gone, as the last ship delivered them here in 1853 (don't quote me on that). Some seem to be still wandering around here though. Most of these photos were shot around the east coast of the island. This is really an incredibly unique corner of the world.... read more

Arrived in Melbourne after 20 hours in the air. The last time I was that high for that long was in 1975! Anyway, Melbourne is a fantastic city with a lot of life and character. Great cafes, restaurants, shops. They have an excellent transit system - you can get almost anywhere reasonably quickly on trains and trams via an intricate network of multi-directional routes- unlike Toronto- which gives tourists a great opportunity to visit the multitude of various neighbourhoods. Also met some really wonderful people, made some new friends, and hooked up with some relatives that I haven't seen in over 40 years. Have a look at some of the photos. From here we're moving on to Tasmania. Stay tuned for those photos as well!... read more
