Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

On the way to the Gold Coast we went to Australia Zoo. “Crikey” it was good! It was clean and there were a lot of animals. I enjoyed it. There were some the lizards that were running around the paths. One went in with the crocodiles and others posed happily for photos. We saw a show, it was good. We enjoyed it. [View Full Entry]

Patting a kangaroo
Patting a wombat

At Australia Zoo we saw lots and lots of animals. There were Red Pandas, Pythons, Echidnas, Cassowaries, Camels, Tasmanian Devils, Otters, American Alligators and of course Crocodiles. Their names were Charley, Amy, Bluey, Casper, Acco, Connie, Agro, Cookie, Scrappa, Weipa and Lucy. We went to Roo Heaven and you could pat a kangaroo and I patted one laying down saying “pat me”. It was just like patting a dog. At the shop on the way out, I got to cuddle a koala and had a photo taken. Then they brought out the Macaw and a Black Cockatoo. I got a photo [View Full Entry]

G'day all! It seems that my encounter with Dave yesterday was not to my mothers taking. I did listen to her 'Stranger Danger' advice when I was younger and therefore decided to check out where I was s'posed to be going last night online first. As soon as I typed the name of the bar in, it said that the only reason this place existed was to sell drugs. After the convo i had had in the car I decided that I'd give it a miss and watch a bit of T.V. Sat in reception this morning awaiting my lift to [View Full Entry]

Croc Show

19/05/09 Tuesday Day 276 Yet another overcast day. Having left Caloundra, we headed to Australia Zoo. This place is huge. It’s very well laid out and the map is very easy to follow. Being Steven Irwin’s zoo, there was obviously loads of crocodiles. And like most crocs, they don’t do much! We had only about 40 minutes to walk around before the first show in the Crocoseum. This is massive. It’s like a big football stadium. During the 40 or so minutes walking around we say Tasmanian Devils, foxes, a camel and some koalas who just seem to sleep is the [View Full Entry]

Day 80 Australia Zoo This zoo is famous mainly due to the late Steve Irwin and family. It is located about 100km north of Brisbane and is home to many animals who live in their natural surroundings. We arrived at 9am ready for the opening as did lots of families as it still the Easter holidays. We spent a couple of hours walking around seeing many native animals including, cuddly koalas, relaxing kangaroos, cute looking dingos, huge cassowary's, hippocrocapigs and of course crocodiles! After seeing the animals that we have tried to see in the wild several times we were very [View Full Entry]

Tribute

The biggest tourist thing to do on the Sunshine Coast is Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. Usually, we're not too supportive of zoos (expecially some of the ones in Europe, recall the bear pits in Switzerland) but they've done a great job in conservation and none of the animals seemed 'caged in'. It's amazing how worshipped Steve Irwin is in Queensland. In Canada, we thought of him as a novelty act but he really has done great things for habitat preservation and awareness. His likeness is all over the zoo and his family still runs the show. Even his annoyingly cute little [View Full Entry]
