Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We got the bus from Noosa to the Steve Irwin Zoo en route to Brisbane. The zoo is all things Australian and we got to see Alligators, Crocodiles, Emus, Koalas, and Kangaroos etc! They do a big show in the Crocoseum with birds, snakes and then the main event - crocs! We got our photos taken with the Koala and decided to put our Xmas hats on to feel a little festive!! We got some very strange looks from the rest of the queue and the first thing the lady said was 'are you sending this picture home?'! We had a [View Full Entry]

We have been in Noosa the last couple of days which has been great. Really chilled out place with wealthy people and a nice relaxed vibe. Loved it! Had a great night out last night at Koala's bar which was just a really good laugh and chatted to loads of new people. Today we went to Australia zoo! Since being a child, one of my dreams has been to cuddle a koala. Today I fulfilled this!!! The koala was called Lenno and he had a speckled bum! lol. So cute. The keeper passed him to me and he was SO heavy [View Full Entry]

They have got every possible type of animal that lives in Oz here, plus a few more. It's easy to see why they call it Steve Irwin zoo cause there are pictures of him all over the place and they still talk about him loads, it kind of makes your hairs stand on end a bit. The best bit was deffenately the Tiger show. [View Full Entry]

Today was an awesome day we headed of to the Australia Zoo, the home to all of Steve Irwins animals. It was massive with many great shows throughout the day. Im so glad we got their early because at 10am we hand fed the elephants that had been rescued from a travelling circus many years ago. Then off to explore the rest of the zoo. I could not believe how massive some of the crocs were, most of them were in pairs as the male needed his woman, it was said the crocs are very territorial, some of them just [View Full Entry]

Went to Australia Zoo today, it was a little disappointing. It's Steve Irwin's zoo so was expecting to see loads of crazy people getting up close to crocs but the croc show was pretty rubbish, the crocodile farm was way better! Got to see some koalas though and had my pic taken with one. Staying in Noosa tonight so when I got back from the zoo I walked down to Noosa National Park which isn't far from my hostel. I was hoping to see a koala in the wild but didn't spot any, nice walk though. Travelling to Brisbane tomorrow. [View Full Entry]

Back to being a backpacker in a hostel....ah well! We got ourselves together fairly early and headed around the corner to the train station and got on our way up to Beerwah for Austalia Zoo. We didn't really know how long the train was going to take us but we weren;t expect the hour and a half journey in the freezing train! We were met al the station by the Australia Zoo bus and taken 2 minutes down the road. We couldn't believe it when it cost $50, double what the lonely planet had prepared us for! Ah well, it's Steve [View Full Entry]

Tues 23rd Oct: Got up early and drove down to the pool. Even though sun was already out, was still a wuss getting in. Did about 40 lengths but it was really hard going. There was so much sand in the water that even with my goggles on I couldn't see anything infront of me. Anyway, was good to get some exercise but that sand just got everywhere! Having sanded down, we headed off to the Zoo (Steve Irwins). Only a 30min drive so there by 0930. Got our map and started our tour, so much to see and do, hard [View Full Entry]

Getting his 5 a day
Glad there's a fence between us

Our next stop was Yandina, which is very near Maroochydore and Maloolabar, both very pretty places with pristine beaches. Trevor has relations living in Nambour and we spent a very enjoyable day catching up with Joyce, Nev, Ivy and Colin. Trevor has always spun a tale about being related to royalty, being from the wrong side of the blanket. Imagine - those claims to fame appear to be true. Other long lost relations from Devon, in the UK, have been researching the family tree and have gone back to the infamous Lawrence Palk, Duke of Devonshire who took advantage of Trevor's [View Full Entry]

Greetings readers, since the last blog we have continued up the east coast of Australia with our new found friends, stopping at Surfers Paradise (aka Surfers Parasite to the locals, or Blackpool to you and me), Brisbane aka Bris-Vegas, and we are now in Noosa, which is quite a sleepy little place. The weather has been excellent and much lounging in the pool has been achieved. We have also realised a lifetime dream and visited Australia Zoo, or to those of you not in the know, the zoo of the late great Steve Irwin himself. We got a free bus to [View Full Entry]

Danger, danger, danger!

Went for a visit to the Mighty Steve's Zoo the other day, which was a good day out although we didn't have time to do as much as I wanted to! Saw the usual croc shows etc that the Zoo is famous for, and I stroked a koala and a kangaroo :) In Brisbane now, just been wandering about the city really, hoping to hire some rollerblades today!
