Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Noosa is a small town with a beach and a few shops. It is nice but there was not a great deal to do there. We met some lovely people in our hostel and had a good couple of nights with them and we even met up with our lovely wee pal from Melbourne unexpectedley Deidre. She had stayed in St Arnauds with us for 2 months. From Noosa we took the bus to Australia Zoo. We had both been looking forward to this for a few weeks. When we arrived it was a lot smaller than we both thought however [View Full Entry]

My last few days have been in noosa which is a unoffical town located a few hours north of brisbane. The place itself was pretty cool, and was a beach resort. The first night we stayed there was pretty uneventful so no need to babble about that but we packed in a lot on day 2. Day 2 me and sarah went to australia zoo which is steve irwins zoo. I have been to quite a few zoos recently but thought it would be worth checking out and sarah was keen to hug a koola so we headed off and got [View Full Entry]

I was quite excited about visiting the zoo, Tim refuses to go in the UK as I always suggest it on a bank holiday!!! Here we were Good Friday in Australia and we had no idea what to expect. The zoo was well signposted and we got there early about 8am. The leaflet we had said the zoo did not open until 9am so we were expecting a wait around. When we arrived we noticed that people were already entering so we went to get our tickets. On the way we were met by two girls dressed at easter bunnies handing [View Full Entry]

Nicky: Hello everyone, hope you are well?? Before we came on this trip I had a list of things I wanted to do in each of the countries we are visiting. Things like Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, etc etc so far I have been really lucky to do them all and I can tick off another one now as we visited Australia Zoo on Friday. I was as upset as most people (well maybe less than Fiona but then she did love Steve Irwin!!) when SI was killed and the zoo is a great memorial to him as well [View Full Entry]

Dinner

Today we headed to Australia Zoo, getting the free courtesy coach at 8.30am, so it was an early(ish) morning. On board we watched like a tribute video to Steve Irwin which kind of makes you appreciate just how much of a legend he was! It's weird that someone could love animals so much to devote their whole life to them, especially just one animal in particular, and of all the animals to choose a crocodile is a weird choice! His daughther Bindi is even named after a crocodile. Now that's obsessed for you! Personally, having never really watched much of his [View Full Entry]

Coff's Harbour to Brisbane We wake up bright and early and get breakfast together. While getting ready to do the dishes, I say to Trish, let's go to the camp kitchen and do them there. It's easier, cleaner and faster than doing them in the caravan. She agrees and we head down. All of a sudden. HOLY CRAP!!! there's 3 kangaroos eatting just a stone's throw from the caravan. We stand in awe for a few minutes watching them pick stuff up off the ground. And what a time not to be carrying any camera! One even has a Joey [View Full Entry]

Drove from Rainbow Beach down to the Australian Zoo (Home of the Crocoldile Hunter) which is on the way to Brisbane. The Zoo is very cool in that it has pretty huge enclosures for all of the animals - the crocodiles were nearly all rescued by Steve Irwina nd brought to the Zoo or they would have been killed. There was a crocodile show where they feed the crocs - a bit tamer than the one we saw at Johnstone's but still pretty cool. We also got to feed Kangaroos and held a koala. It was pretty sad knowing that Steve [View Full Entry]

In the area of Glass Mountains near Landsborough there is Australian Zoo - the place of Crocodile hunter. It was own by Steve and Terri Irwin but after unexpected death of Steve ,Terri is the only owner and director of the zoo. Steve is known as a hero and icon to Australians for his passion and dedication to preserve wild life. He made a lot of programs for Animal Planet which are still showing. There is a great passion among all staff in the zoo; they educate and interact with visitors, mainly with children. One of the atraction of the day [View Full Entry]

Giants!
The big show!
In loving memory!

Day 267 (19/12/07) One of the main things we wanted to do on the East Coast was make a visit to Australia Zoo, the life's work of Steve Irwin, and today was the day. The zoo is about 70km north of Brisbane and we set off with an almost full Nora as we were joined by Spencer, Kayleigh, Fiona and Steph and would meet Liam and Gary when we arrived as they'd already booked on a tour. Suprisingly after the previous night's festivities we were all feeling pretty good and looking forward to our day out. As we drove down Steve [View Full Entry]
