Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

My last day in Brisbane it rained. It’s starting to look like a pattern. So that meant I didn’t get to go to either the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary or the Mt. Coot-tha Reserve. Instead I spent the day at the library, doing internet related things, and then went back to the hostel where I spend several hours talking to other backpackers on the veranda, including a guy from South Korea who says that he’ll meet me in February and show me around. I checked out fairly early Saturday morning. Not early enough to be on time, however, but early none-the-less. [View Full Entry]

Aussie Adventure - Part VI - Australia Zoo - October 8, 2008 What a fun day! I think this was one of the big highlights from our trip. The zoo opened at 9am but since we were on the "early to rise" schedule, we took an early morning detour to see the Glass House Mountains. They are what is left from volcanic activity millions of years ago. The Australia Zoo was created in the 1970s by Steve Irwin's parents as a reptile park and became the Australia Zoo in 1992. It has continued to grow year after year and is such [View Full Entry]

This was certainly one of the main highlights of our holiday to Australia, the place is amazing and the staff are so freindly and helpfull. The journey took about an hour alonfg the coastal road, which lead to the newly named 'Steve Irwin Highway' and is located in the middle of no where. The zoo currently uses 70 acres of land, but this will be increased to over 300 in the next five years. We watched the main show in the crocoseum and saw exotic birds, snakes and the large croc called murray. Never had thought that i would handle a [View Full Entry]

So this week has been a difficult one for me. The job search has been less than promising. I went for an interview for a position I really wanted and have not heard back from them yet...I am feeling pretty down. Each time I make a big life change I always hope that things will fall effortlessly into place so that I will have some sort of sign that I made the right decision...unfortunatly this is never the case and I generally struggle before comfort sets in. Rationally I know things will work out and that I will learn from this [View Full Entry]

Having recently bought a book on venomous snakes and spiders we decided to go in search of the live species at the zoo so we could help identify them if necessary! There are ten of the most poisonous snakes in Australia some of them in Queensland so where best to go than Australia Zoo! The drive north took about an hour and a half on the Steve Irwin Highway and took us pass the beautiful Table Glass Mountains surrounded by pineapple fields and vines growing on nearby slopes. The huge signs with Steve grappling with a crocodile directed us to the [View Full Entry]

After an evening in Brisbane and a night in a pretty bad hostel, we were heading to Australia Zoo! Our tour guide, for the journey there and back, had worked at the zoo before and was a family friend of the Irwin's. He should us a DVD of Steve Irwin's life on the way there and a picture of him, Steve, Steve's wife and a Tiger! Once we arrived at the Zoo, we could tell that it wasn't like any other Zoo. One of the keepers was taking a Wombat out for a walk, on a lead, around the public paths! [View Full Entry]

Well i spent lots of money to do this... dont ask how much... but i had a platinum tour of the Australian Zoo. Private tour of the zoo including almost all of the animal encounters a photographer during each animal encounter and access to areas of the zoo the normal public are unable to go into. The animal hospital tour was so busy when we went in... There were baby joeys (days old) in a incubator because a car hit the mother. A turtle that was run over by a car and the shell was cracked in numerous locations and the [View Full Entry]

Panoramic Picture: Zoo Kangaroo (a wee bit blocky due to site picture size regulations) Australia Zoo On Thursday morning we awoke bright and early catching the 8am train from Brisbane eager to get to the zoo for it opening. I think poor Gary was beginning to get tired of me going on and on about the zoo but I was desperate to cuddle one of the Koalas and my expectations of the zoo was high from my internet surfing whilst working hard in Sydney. The train journey was around an hour and a half, and after arriving at Beerwah, the courtesy [View Full Entry]

This week our travels have taken us to the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. We're staying in a nice apartment for the week and it's conveniently across the road from a nice white sandy beach! On Monday, we took a free shuttle bus to the Australia Zoo - one of the Sunshine Coast's more famous attractions. It's the zoo that was founded by Steve Irwin's father and now run by his wife. It's not a huge zoo, but is experiencing rapid growth (74 employees in 2000 and over 375 now!). Most of the animals were reptiles (lizards, snakes and of course, crocodiles!), but [View Full Entry]

We wanted to see the home of The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, so we made the journey from Noosa to the Steve Irwin highway & his famous Australia Zoo. We knew what we wanted to see - The Crocs!! Since arriving in Queensland we had been trying to avoid them & were always wary when we saw a "Danger, Crocs have killed in this area" government issued sign. Today however our hunt was on!! Bad weather had kept people away from the zoo. This seemed to work to our advantage & we managed to be indoors when the rains poured. The [View Full Entry]
