Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

CRIKEY! This zoo is awesome! Transport & entry package from the hostels were almost $100 so we decided to make our way to the zoo & save some $$$ - we left around 10am and got there about 12pm - it took a bit longer than we’d expected as we had to wait 45 minutes for the bus connection from the train station! So that left us with 4 1/2 hr hours to explore and we enjoyed every minute there! We made our way around the park and saw a couple of shows, the croc show was brill - they fed [View Full Entry]

Hi, Not that much to say on this really - just a stop off in between Brisbane and Hervey Bay and think the pictures pretty much tell the story. Highlights were feeding the elephants and stroking the koalas (they're really cool) - the main event, the crocodile show, was actually pretty disappointing. The croc was very lazy! Anyway i was relieved to get outta there cos the greyhound arrived an hour and a half late to pick me up and i thought i was gonna be sleeping at the zoo for a while! It pissed it down the entire day - [View Full Entry]

Australia zoo was calling! “Crikey! Have a go at that!” R.I.P. Steve Irwin. We got to the zoo at around midday and were just in time for the croc show at the famous crocacium where Steve used to prance around sticking his head in crocs mouths and other such antics. It was really good fun to watch and Matt got a free photo of Steve feeding a croc for his awesome impression of a koala. I use the word 'awesome' losely. He didn't actually do much, but then, I suppose neither do koalas! The highlight of the day for me was [View Full Entry]

Getting up at 4am to get a taxi to the airport and then a flight to Brisbane was not the funnest journey in the world and on arrival we had to then get a train, check into our hostel and run to the station only to be told a billion times by various members of staff that there was no way of getting to the zoo (on a Saturday-you would think the busiest day of the week) until gone 11. A lot of waiting around and sleeping on trains later we arrived at the zoo and Becki's accent suddenly was transformed [View Full Entry]

17/1/09 = Australia Zoo....Brilliant :) V.tired when alarm went off at 6:15. Couldn't even roll out of bed because was on top bunk. Half walked/half slid down ladder, picked up clothes and washbag prepared night before and went to get in shower in hopes would magically wake me up. Did feel better after shower, but already late then. Had quick, but huge bowl of museli, did last packing up, then checked out. Had to walk to greyhound bus stop because rubbish Base hostel only do pick-ups, not drop-offs; really is a rubbish hostel! Walk was v.painful. Only 10mins, but felt like [View Full Entry]

17th January 2008 - CRIKEY........THE ZOO WAS AWESOME!!! We arrived at the zoo just after 9am......we were all excited!! There wasn't much of a queue and so once we had paid and had dumped our backpacks in a locker we set off and got ready for some animal action!! Looking at the map there weren't loads of animals here like at the Singapore Zoo but a lot of it was hands on and so I prepared myself to be brave!! First we saw a baby alligator being carried around by a zoo worker.....all decked out in the cream safari outfit like [View Full Entry]

After seeing the sunrise I caught my bus to Brisbane. I pottered around for a bit then caught a train back up north to a town called Caboolture to see Kelli, who I met when I was in Canada. I found her hard at work and waited a couple of minutes for her to finish. We set out to drive even further up north to Caloundra (all this going down and up was the best option I promise!) to where Kelli was house sitting. During the drive I said that I wanted to see more kangeroos in the wild, so she [View Full Entry]

What a cutie!!!!!!!!!

On Saturday we decided to all go to Steve Irwin's zoo. It was amazing!! First we went to the crocoseum, a 5000 seat stadium where we saw snakes, birds and a crocodile called Monty. We then split into two groups and started working our way round the various enclosure. The afternoon was particularly exciting...some of us had our photo taken hugging a koala bear...so cute! We also saw tigers swimming in a pool with their handlers and fed some elephants. Best bit of the day was probably hand feeding the kangaroos. They have a massive bit of land and just roam [View Full Entry]
