We had time and money (sort of) for one last trip before we left Australia. It was a toss up between Tasmania and Uluru (Ayers Rock). We decided on Uluru as you can’t come to Oz and not see the rock! So we booked flights, a tour and a couple of days off work. It’s pretty expensive to get to Alice Springs but we managed to get “cheap” flights with the local equivalent of Ryanair. We arrived in Alice Springs where our hostel picked us up, handy. After we’d checked in we went into town to get food, check in for our tour the next day & check out the sights of Alice Springs! It took about 5mins to see the sights! Needless to say not really much to see or do in Alice, one of ... read more

There are not enough adjectives to describe Uluru (Ayers Rock). This huge monolith which rises 348 meters from the desert has a girth of 9.4 kms. It is estimated, however, that at least two-thirds of the Rock lies beneath the surface. It has such a magical aura about it. To me it looks like a huge big red sandhill. Indescrible really. Since we were here 25 years ago we have travelled to many countries and seen some amazing sights however this is by far the most remarkable. Ross and Phil decided as soon as they saw it they wanted to climb it. So off they went. Lee, Robyn and I had climbed it previously and decided we had been there done that and didn’t need to do it again (mainly because it is a really big ... read more

After Qantas had changed our flight times, we ended up in the unfortunate situation of flying into Alice Springs, picking up a rental car and, after having picked up a car load full of snacks, driving for 5 hours to get to Kings Canyon! It turned out that with a standard rental car, we weren't allowed to drive on the unsealed roads between Alice Springs and Kings Canyon so we had to take a longer detour. In hindsight, obviously it wasn't the best plan, but I guess we can add boring outback driving to our list of life experiences... and it is a bit different to the usual road trips - 130km/h speed limits along excessively long straight roads through the dessert where they have to put a road sign in place if there is a ... read more

OK - Big Rock. That´s about it. Cool though - exceeded our expectations in scale. Stayed in the world´s most expensive tent at 90 bucks a night. Freezing at night as well. Did a 3 hour trek around the Olgas - good training for South America. Minus the coca leaves. ... read more

After one of the best drives ever along the great ocean road, and up to the grampians, we were then faced with a five hour drive to adelaide to drop off our car and meet our tour bus. It was the most boring drive ever! There was one stretch of road that was 10km and we didn't have to turn the steering wheel once! Mad. Anyway, we made it to adelaide and dropped the car off on time (yay). Next morning we were up at 5 to meet our tour bus to take us to the outback. Despite the early start, the journey went remarkably quickly. First stop on the road was one of the massive salt lakes that exist in the outback north of Adelaide, they're bizarre! Absolutely huge patches of solid salt, 8 inches ... read more

Arriving back into Darwin after our jolly in Bali, we eventually managed to convince the immigration officer that despite her intuition we really aren’t illegally working our way around Oz (and we’re really not!) and finally stamped in for another six months were reunited with Tilly, our van. Obviously upset that we’d abandoned her for a week, she’d decided to leak clutch and brake fluid everywhere. We managed to limp round to the caravan park we’d previously stayed in which was still locked up for the night, and so ended up sleeping on the side of the road for a few hours. The next day, $500 and a rebuilt master cylinder later, we were on our way south towards Melbourne. Heading down “the track”, as the Stuart Highway is often referred to, we passed dozens and ... read more

So after my wicked day at the beach etc and time with naj, tammy and matt, i headed back to the hostel and washed and dryed some clothes and grabbed some water and had the most boring dinner ever and watched some scrubs and south park. I went to the room to catch some sleep as i had a n airport shuttle pick up of 7.45am and the dorm is in two halfs and my half were some americans and we all wanted to grab some kip and the rest of the folk in the hostel decided to have a party in the dorm which was not appreciated and did not help me sleep, the bus was in time in the morning and i got the airport checked in and gave my weekly transport pass to a ... read more

So our sydney adventure was over after 7 months and unfortunately we joined the hoards of english backpackers at the airport as we make our long journey home........although we were heading off somewhere other than the gold coast for a couple of months on the lash......we were heading out into the middle of nowhere to hopefully get a better perspective of Australia. Our journey on the way to the airport was comical......as we went on a shuttle bus....picking up such a strange bunch of people. We picked up a old woman who kept reminding the driver she was not going to the airport to catch a passenger jet....but a private jet..........yes thats right........a private jet and 'im jetsetting all round australia on a private jet'....(but couldnt stretch further than a $12 bus to the airport), and ... read more

Hello everyone! Well what a great few days we have just had. We flew from Cairns to Yulara, which is the airport right next to Ayers Rock (Uluru). It was so cool seeing it from the air as we flew in! Yulara is basically a big resort with 5 different hotels and its all owned by one company, Vogages, and the nearest town is a few 100 Km's away so have the monopoly over everything remotly near Uluru! We stayed in the one budget hotel/hostel called Pioneer Outback Hotel. As soon as we landed to the 30 degree heat we got our tours sorted so as I could run to the pool much to Martyns disgust! Had a lovely lazy day and early to bed cause we were getting up super ealy for sun rise over ... read more

Hello everyone We had a fantastic trip to see Ayers Rock which was more impressive than I thought it would be. We went with Mulga Tours which is part of Annies hostal where we stayed in Alice Springs. It was the cheapest we could find & I highly recommend them. Highly professional & efficient. There were 2 mini buses full of guests & we were looked after by Scooter & Fiona. It was a long drive, but well worth it. We had several rest stops along the way, including visiting a camel farm where some of the girls on our trip went for a ride. We spent the afternoon at Kings Canyon which was fabulous. The colours of the rock formations were beautiful & we stoped off at the Garden of Eden water hole for a ... read more
