We arrived in Alice Springs and were a bit disappointed that we'd left Sydney in glorious sunshine and arrived in the Red Centre where it was pouring down with rain.. we thought it wasn't supposed to rain in the desert! We had our 3 day Uluru trip booked for the following day so spent the afternoon sheltering from the rain, exploring Alice Springs town centre (not really that much to explore) and preparing ourselves for a very early start of 5am the next day. We got up with no problem the next morning and were very excited to be going to explore the centre of Australia along with the other 22 people in our group and Mark our guide. Off we headed to Kings Canyon, the first stop for our journey into the red desert. On ... read more

I don't like camels! But I really can't stand pandas Seriously those camels just look plain silly, silly indeed! First of all; how can you expect to be treated with any sort of respect with those lips? It’s like two big flapping, ridiculous lumps. Then there’s the eyes; bloody big, ugly and completely stoned eyes - but they are not even stoned, that would be some sort of excuse. I mean koalas appear to be stupid little animals, BUT they only eat a type of leaves that get’s them sort of high, and when they are not getting drugged up on those leaves, they sleep. That is cool, and therefore I don’t hate koalas - fact! We’ve only covered the head of those goofy bastards, and the head itself would be reason enough for not taken ... read more

"Dare I say it but that is one mighty big rock." Would you believe that it only rains about 10 days of the year at Uluru and it was raining when we arrive. This only adds to the mystical appearance of this great big orange rock, and in fairness brings the tempurature down from 40 degrees so I was not complaining. It was by far at its best for sunset, will try to get some piccies up when we have more time. It really was impressive, and humbling to see. Another good time was meant to be sunrise, so we fell out of bed at 4:30 and drove down. It was good (I am sure) as we promptly fell asleep in the car! After a couple of days we were pleased with the trip but glad ... read more

Tuesday 2nd December, up at 5.30 to get some breakfast before being picked up by a big 4 wheel drive coach, to start our 3 day tour of Uluru/Red Centre. It was about a 450km drive to our campsite, we stopped on the way first at a camel farm, (we declined the camel ride) then another stop at Mt Ebenezer cattle station where we saw some Aboriginal art work. Finally we arrive at our campsite at Uluru and have to unload coach with all our food and equipment before setting up for lunch in camp kitchen. The campsite is a permanent site so no tents to erect thank goodness! The tents had beds with matresses and a sheet and sleeping bags which were not used as temperature in tents was probably over 40 degrees! After lunch ... read more

Our taxi arrived at 8.30am to take us to the airport, and by 10.30am we were taking off for Ayers Rock Airport. The landscape became more and more barren as we travelled further inland. It wasn’t long before the ground beneath us was a patchwork of browns and ambers. As we approached the airport the land looked like a red table cloth with black sand scattered across it. As we descended I realised the black dots were trees, against the red sand they looked so dark. As we stepped off the plane we were met with a full on blast of heat. We’d been warned it would be hot but we hadn’t expected this. We were pleased to get into the tiny air conditioned airport terminal. There was only one baggage carousel and as it was ... read more

21st November 2008 - STANLEY CHASM & SIMPSON"S GAP!! As we were ahead of schedule we decided to spend a full day in Alice Springs rather than moving on straight away. Unfortunatley the pool on the campsite was closed so no morning swim for me. Instead we passed some time reading n lazing about near the van. Nice not to be driving for a while!! At around 11am we set out in the van to Stanley Chasm. We hoped to catch it at its best when the walls were lit up by the sun. When we arrived we actually put our trainers on instead of braving the rocky walk in flipflops and walked for 15 minutes to the Chasm along a creek bed. The walls were a pretty bright orange when we got there & were ... read more

Arrived in Alice Springs to thunderstorms and river flooding which hasn't happened for 16 years ! Roads closed as under water. ( Not my fault - honest!). Have great pictures of Aborigine children playing in the brown water. Don't know why they weren't at school. Alice is weird place , there is an uneasiness about it which makes a tourist feel uncomfortable. There are groups of disconnected Aborigines wandering around or sitting in groups on the grass. Bit of a probelm with alcohol too. Whites don't talk to them except for a few tourists as there is sometimes 'artwork' to buy. I chatted to an old couple by the river who were eating cold tinned spaghetti off newspaper for breakfast. They had had their blanket stolen and were going to Melbourne. Alice is just a stop ... read more

22/11/08 = Sunset at Uluru Set off early for Uluru, but decided to call in at K-Mart and have a look at clothes first - ours looking really tatty after all handwashing now. Know I shouldn't say it....but that 30mins shopping in K-Mart was one of most enjoyable things I've done so far! Loved it! Floated round like I was in a dream world. Not even that good a shop - only like George at Asda, but shopping is shopping and it's the first time I've really done it here! Didn't even matter when I got attacked by a mentally disabled lady who tried to grab me and ended up scratching all of my arm - her carer looked mortified and was really apologetic, but it didn't even matter, just carried on smiling and looking through ... read more

After an extensive bus journey through the streets of downtown Sydney early in the morning we had an uneventful flight over barren red lands. It was strange to be heading to an airport in the middle of nowhere with no big skyscrapers or any buildings of note for miles around. The bus picked us up and took us to the resort only 5minutes down the road and 30km from the rock itself. On checking in we were informed that we had booked two male dorm rooms but a brief discussion later the manager saw our point regarding the online booking process and upgraded us to a smaller dorm at no cost. Result! It ended up that in our 4bed dorm we had no roomies for the 3 nights that we stayed there. We had booked on ... read more

The Red Center October 28, 2008 Happy birthday today to my big brother, Jim, in Denver! We’re a day ahead here so he will celebrate tomorrow. We’ve seen every nook and cranny of Uluru, or so it seems. Most tourists here take short walks to see different paintings or waterholes around the rock. Of course, we were obligated to walk the entire six miles around the rock. I guess it gave me a sense of accomplishment and did give us a feel for Uluru’s size. It was warm, but not uncomfortably hot. The flies were kept at bay for a while by a nice breeze, but after about an hour I decided that buying that fly net for my hat was the best $5 I’ve ever spent in my life. Fortunately, those nasty buzzers don’t like ... read more
