11 Feb Stopped at Mon Repos Beach Turtle sanctuary. Sounds great - Loggerhead turtles are an endangered species and anything to help save them has to be a good thing. Don’t think they are going about it the right way though. We expected to stand behind a rope and have the magical experience of seeing baby turtles hatching and running down to the beach. Sadly it had been turned into a bit of a tourist circus. The baby turtles were practically dug up by the ‘rangers’, then passed around like sweets for people to prod and poke. Their finally humiliation was to have to run between the legs children to get to the sea - I was disgusted and walked away at this point. I think they should be ashamed of themselves, I don’t call this ... read more

After leaving Perth region, we flew to the desert. We hired a car at Ayrs Rock and (Jon) drove to the Kings Canyon, which was about 4 hours away. We stayed in a prison cell type of room in the 'resort' (at least we didn't have to camp in a tent, as it was boiling). We were right next to the kitchen and it was pretty irritating because, despite massive notices everywhere, people just keep leaving the doors open to the kitchen, and the toilet block, and the dingos would come in, streaking all the rubbish on the floor next to our room. I got over it, eventually, but when I saw one girl leave the gate open, I did tell her off (I am becoming like my dad). Althought the accommodation for that night was ... read more

Liebe Freunde! Was fuer ein Erlebnis!

At Christmas 2008 my husband and I travelled to Australia to have Christmas with my daughter and her husband who have been living there since February 2007. Neither my husband nor I have been there before so my daughter arranged lots of activities for us including Ayers rock. We thoroughly enjoyed the bus trip photo opportunity, and native Aboriginal walk around the rock but it was a little difficult for my daughter to be away from the resort for too long as she is pregnant. As she was getting off the bus to rush to the resort reception toilet a family of Germans who had been on the trip too accosted her about sunglasses. She did not understand their broken English and told them she was going to the toilet. On her way to the toilet ... read more

Thought it would be a good idea to escape the cityscapes of Christmas tinsel and holiday music and head to the outback. Christmas in Uluru. What could be better? Maybe I should of thought about the fact that it is the middle of summer here and apparently desert landscapes can get quite hot! This is probably why I don't like to plan things, my less intelligent side tends to make those decisions. I have always wanted to see Uluru and had read so many wonderful things about the place that I was worried that it would be disappointing. It's hard to live up to built up expectations. I was a bit apprehensive about going there. What if it wasn't this mystical place that is so often reported by visitors? What if I got there and it ... read more

Before making my way to the east coast, I flew into Uluru to check out the famous rock. Pretty much the only place to stay near Uluru is in the resort village of Yulara, which is about 20km from Uluru. The place has an airport, restaurants, a supermarket, hotels, police station, fire station, primary school and university campus (really), so seeing Uluru is pretty easy and convenient. I was pleasantly surprised by the resort - the facilities were good, things were a bit expensive but not extortionately over-priced and there were free shuttles taking you to/from the airport and around the village, which was good thing since the temperatures maxed out to 37. The first thing I did after checking in was to figure out a way to get to Uluru. This turned out to be ... read more

Entry by Jules Tuesday 16/12/08 I had a reasonable amount of sleep, although I did have to get up to nip to the loo at 1am. I was pretty surprised I managed to force myself into the short walk across the campsite to the toilet block given my imagination of being attacked by all manner of creepy crawlies, snakes, dingos etc etc. Nonetheless I made it and even succeeded in my task through the haze of moths swarming around the lights and the array of beetles scuttling around the floor. I was woken at 4am by Mark banging on our tents; Rich was woken by the dingos howling at 3am. As it was still dark we benefitted from another view of the stars across the sky, including the southern cross, as well as the almost full ... read more

Up at 4am today to be ready to leave by 5am... off to see sunrise at Uluru...! It is amazing how quickly it rises once it gets going! There were loads of people in the viewing area, a different area than for the sunset. Got some great photos then we were dropped off at the beginning of the base walk. The climb was closed due to the weather as it was too windy up on top. It's a 2 1/2 hours walk around the base of Uluru, got to see the baby Uluru rock at the back which is sacred to the women aborigines. We went to the "snake"waterhole. Then Ray walked us along the Mala Walk ( Male = walabi ) this area of the rock is again sacred to the women as there is a ... read more

We took a flight from Perth to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and joined a great trour led by the Anangu people (the Aboriginal folk of that area). We learnt about their creation stories surrounding the rock and watched sunsets and thunderstorms whilst sipping champers. After a BBQ back at our lodge it was time to catch a flight to Adelaide for the lext leg.... read more
