We arrived into Melbourne just before a long weekend and a week before the Melbourne Grand Prix around mid-March, planning for it to be our new home until July. Due to our complete lack of forward planning we stupidly thought we could book 3 nights accommodation and we would have found a place of our own easy enough after that. As it turned out nobody in the backpacker accommodation/short term rents were leaving until after the Grand Prix, no surprise there! So we spent the first week living in about 4 different hostels, our friends couch (thanks Brid), then a share house for 2 weeks. Finally we found an apartment to call home; a one bed / studio apartment in an old house in St Kilda; a regular haunt for backpackers living in Melbourne. St Kilda ... read more

We had time and money (sort of) for one last trip before we left Australia. It was a toss up between Tasmania and Uluru (Ayers Rock). We decided on Uluru as you can’t come to Oz and not see the rock! So we booked flights, a tour and a couple of days off work. It’s pretty expensive to get to Alice Springs but we managed to get “cheap” flights with the local equivalent of Ryanair. We arrived in Alice Springs where our hostel picked us up, handy. After we’d checked in we went into town to get food, check in for our tour the next day & check out the sights of Alice Springs! It took about 5mins to see the sights! Needless to say not really much to see or do in Alice, one of ... read more

During our time in Melbourne there were 2 big trips we wanted to do, Philip Island and the Great Ocean Road. After leaving everything until the last minute in Perth we decide to get organised earlier this time. First was a trip to Phillip Island, we decided to book a day tour for this one. We started out early on a Saturday morning, it was a small group with just ourselves, one English guy and 5 Japanese and our guide was a Kiwi. Our guide was a little odd, he got very stressed with the traffic getting out of Melbourne and decided because only 3 of use could speak English that there wasn't any point in telling us too much!?! When he did decide to enlighten us with some local information he would take 10 minutes ... read more

We headed for Sydney not really knowing if we would stay for a few months or just a few days before going on to Melbourne to live and work for awhile. We decided to spend out last night in the campervan just north of Sydney near Palm Beach, where Home and Away is filmed. The next day before heading off to Sydney to drop back the camper we took a trip to the beach hoping to catch some filming, unfortunately there wasn't any filming that day which worked out well as Allen decided to pop the question! We arrived in Sydney crossing the famous Harbour Bridge. To celebrate the big day Allen had booked the Four Seasons hotel to be home for the night instead of the hostel we had organised back up the coast. I ... read more

We left Hervey Bay to continue our adventure down the east coast. Also if anyone is passing through Hervey Bay you might call into the Windmill caravan park where you’ll find my swimmers and beach towel are probably still hanging up! Luckily the rain had stopped and the weather had picked up again. We were headed for a little seaside town called Noosa and decided to stop off at Rainbow beach to see the massive sand dune looking out over the coloured cliff face (hence the name). We drove up to the top of town where you have a short walk through the rainforest until it opened out to the pretty impressive and massive Carlo sand dune; with nobody else there it was amazing, high above the sea. So back to the campervan to head to ... read more

Well the next major stop on our trip was Arlie beach and a sailing trip in the glorious sun around the Whitsunday Islands. At least thats what we hoped for but unfortunately the weather had turned and the rain was well and truely down, as depressing as it was after spending 3 months in Perth and only having 2 days of rain we couldn't really complain! It turned out to be a bit of an adventure! We booked a 2 day 1 night trip on an 80ft sail boat. Day one rained the whole day, but we had a good gang of about 20, including 9 irish on the boat all around the same age so we managed to have plenty of craic. We got kitted up in the rain coats but still managed to get ... read more

We arrived in Cairns at the beginning of February to start the next leg of our trip, travelling down the east coast towards Sydney or on to Melbourne, still to be decided! The first thing you notice here is how much greener it is than WA and the humidity hits you straight away! on our 1st day we had a look around Cairns which had a good buzz to the city and lots of backpacker pubs offering cheap food and cheaper drink. The next day we did a tour to the rainforest, stopping of at some of the local sights such as the Cathedral Fig tree and the Millaa Millaa falls, both located in the Atherton Tablelands. Bart the tour guide was a bit cracked so it was a fun tour, and we got to learn ... read more

We arrived in Perth Western Australia at the start of November following our 2 months in South East Asia, where we finally got to unpack our bags for awhile as we stayed for about 3 months in total. We rented out an apartment in the city, perfect location only problem was having to share it with the cockroaches, but that’s nearly a given in Australia, at least there were no bed bugs, another common complaint! We also picked up jobs easily enough, Monday to Friday so leaving us the weekends to tour around. We tried to do something each weekend but in true style we spent a lot of weekends lounging on the beaches and then spent the last month cramming trips in each weekend. We managed to get a lot done but you'd need a ... read more

We took a bus from Malaysia to Singapore, it was the most luxurious bus ever, especially after some of the other modes of transport we had experienced in our travels. There was only 26 seats on a big bus and each one was like a lazyboy with motorised footrests, pure luxury and this was the cheap bus!!! It took about 3 hours to reach the border but it was interesting to see Malaysia outside of the city, its really green but every so often there are just estates dotted in the middle of nowhere all stuck up together. The road from Kuala Lumpur to the border is excellent so a very painless journey. Arriving into Singapore you cross over a huge bridge to customs on the other side. You have to get out and the bus ... read more
