So, 4:30am, very dark, reasonably cold, and very sleepy, we all got up for breakfast. The hand powered lights didn't give off much in the way of illumination, so finding all your belongings in the tent was tricky at such a time. Then we packed up the bus, jumped aboard and set off for kings canyon, about 45 mins away. When we arrived it was still quite dark, although sunrise was only a few minutes away so we could see enough to walk. We walked up the start of two walks - one would take 3.5 hours and the other about 30 minutes. The long walk started with a steep climb up to the top of the canyon, whilst the other walk was more gentle. After some discussion we all decided to go on the long ... read more

2/7/09 Off at 9am & on the road , stopped for a cuppa at Curtain Springs & then we turned off onto Luritja Rd , the way to kings Canyon & pulled up at No 47 NT free spot & liked it so much we decided to spend 2 nights there. The camp is shady & well off the Rd & fresh water. We let the girls have a run off there leads over the hill & they loved it. Den sent an hour collecting firewood & I tidied up & got tea ready. It was cool, so we started the fire at 4pm & sat around it & cooked tea & had an early night. Day 53 (Friday 12/06/09, NJJ) Up at 5.30am. Very cold. Picked up at 6.20am for The Rock tour. Everyone on the bus (21) had to take it in turns to sit at the front and introduce ourselves - embarrassing at first. Around midday we arrived at Kings Canyon for a walk - over 6km and took about 3.5 hours. It was hot even though it's winter but I think we're definitely doing it at the right time of year, summer would be way too hot. About 5pm we stopped at the roadside to collect firewood, this involved knocking down and breaking up dead trees. Jamie got really stuck in. Short time later we stopped at Curtin Springs for alcohol etc stock up. They also sold port which they officially call 'F*cking Good Port'. By 7.30pm we ... read more

Kevin and I were both so excited to finally be going on our Outback adventure! The Outback is just so quintessentially Australian, and no trip to Oz would be complete without a trip into the Red Centre. So, we booked a three-day, two-night trip called “The Rock Tour”. Day 1: We were picked up outside our hostel bright and early, 6am! Our tour guide was a really nice guy named Greg, and he picked us up in a 22-seater van. After picking up the rest of our group, we began the long drive to King’s Canyon. Our group kept occupied during the drive to the canyon by: listening to Greg talk about the history of the region, including the culture of the local Aboriginal peoples, and getting to know each other by playing icebreaker games and ... read more

Entry by Rich Wednesday 17/12/08 We had a bit of a lie in on Wednesday as we only had to get up at 4.30. The reason for the early starts is the heat. To complete this morning's walk around King's Canyon takes just over three hours and there isn't much shade. With temperatures reaching 40 degrees by 9 a.m it would be too hot to comfortably complete the walk. After a short drive from the campsite to King's Canyon we set out on the walk at 6 a.m. The first half hour or so is the only really demanding stretch with a steep ascent for 600 metres or so. After that the walk levels out at the top of the canyon. There are some stunning views from the canyon across the rocky outcrops and over the ... read more

Had a lie in today - up at 5am!!! he he!! We had to get up early so we could walk in the cooler time of day, by 11am it is soo hot it would be impossible! Left at 6am and drove to the Canyon, for a 3 1/2 hour walk. It is very steep to start off with but then it is a wonderfull walk the rest of the way... Got to the top and the views were amazing! Could see for miles... The rock formations are amazing, they are layers of rock in different angles, these are layers of sand compressed over the years, then the sand dunes would cover them up, another layer would form etc... We got to see a couple of ring tailed dragon lizards and walked down to the Garden ... read more

We drove to Kings Canyon and stayed at the only campsite around this area, we were warned to keep all clothing items off the lines because of the Dingo's, we saw a couple of them, really skinny dogs, quite scary looking really, children have to be kept away, there is still stories of a baby being taken my a Dingo a few years back, no one knows if this is true, but not worth the risk. We descided to whimp out and do the shorter walk through the centre of the canyon instead of climbing to the top and walking around, good job really as the rain came in that afternoon. I did the same walk back in 2003 and it looked completely different, much drier now, fallen dead trees, no stream running through, but still ... read more

Sep 7-8-9-10 More from Sep 7. I’ve seen more Apollo campervans than any other. Father’s Day today. How many fathers do you know that get two fathers days in one year? So, kids, where are the Fathers day cards?? Saw some horses by the side of the road, north of Marla. Might not be interesting to anyone out there, but in an area where there isn’t much, it was worth noting. For those of you who might have thought that all of Australia was HOT, well think again. Melbourne had a forecast last night of ZERO!!! Darwin, on the other hand, forecast a low of 23 degrees. Would you believe a RED Greyhound bus?? They are actually Grey at home! Oh yeh, in Coober Pedy they have a drive in movie theatre that shows movies on ... read more

We sadly left Ayers Rock resort today and headed the 300km to Kings Canyon, when we arrive we set up camp with the Lemos and had a great view of the edge of the Canyon, we also found out that the DINGO population was very strong and they love to venture into the caravan park and steal stuff, shoes, food and even laptop computers so we made sure nothing was left outside. Tonight we went to the Outback BBQ bar for some great food and fun entertainment. We spent the first day doing some short walks around the Canyon. We decided to rest our legs and do the 7km Rim walk along the top of Kings Canyon tomorrow. Kathleen Springs was a pretty 2km walk into a small gorge that they use to use to round ... read more
