We got up very early and were on the road by 7am leaving Coober Pedy. We stopped to take pictures of the sunrise and had battery problems with the camera. We had the heater going full blast at this stage as it was cold outside. We saw dead Kangaroos, burnt out cars, Camels, Cattle Beasts and Wedge Tail Eagles and there were puddles from the recent rains. We stopped at roadhouses to buy fuel and food then crossed the boarder from South Australia to Northern Territory. We had been warned about agricultural inspections at the boarder and had munched up all our fruit before leaving Coober Pedy. It turns out there are no border inspections and we could have carried our breakfast fruit with us to eat at Kings Canyon. After the boarder we turned on ... read more

Driving up to Kings Canyon and hearing the description of the walk from an experience guide created some nervous butterflies… but I was excited about the challenge that lay ahead. The closer we got to the Canyon, the bigger it got… and so did the nervous butterflies. As we began scampering up the first part of the Walk, it became obvious why they call it ‘Heart Attack Hill’ - the first twenty minutes were equivalent to a good couple of hours in an intense gym class! A few well deserved water stops allowed me to take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Finally reaching the top of the Canyon, we were rewarded with amazing, 360-degree views- a sight you would never become tired of. Fortunately, the rest of the walk was much easier than Heart ... read more

Zgodbe s katerimi so pojasnjevali naravne pojave….

Day eight started with another early morning so that we could get around King's Canyon before the sun became too intense. Ian had warned us that the beginning of the route was up a very steet 300m incline called heart attack hill that would take us to the top of the canyon wall and from where we could walk around the rim. When we arrived at the bottom, the air already stiflingly hot, we saw why we had been advised to bring a lot of water for the walk. Living up to it's name, heart attack hill was very intimidating. We had to take a couple of breaks on the way up to the top but when we arrived the view was well worth the climb. We were able to look out over the plains behind ... read more

16th November - 18 November 2009 Kings Canyon Headed off from Alice Springs on the morning of the 16th for the long drive south to Kings Canyon. I had a quick side trip into Rainbow Valley Conservation Park. Well quick as I could on a 23km dirt, bumpy road. Again another really hot day today. Rainbow Valley was stunning but I arrived in the middle of the day and I think you really need to visit here on sunset or sunrise to get all those magnificent colours in the rocks. It was still nice however and I am glad I did the side trip. Back on the Stuart Hwy southbound I stopped in at the Erldunda roadhouse on the turn off for Uluru/ Kings Canyon. Honestly at this point I still didn't know if I was ... read more

The next morning we packed up camp and headed out to Kings Canyon for our 3 hour walk. It was a hard walk! At least the first part was anyway; the hill we had to climb to reach the top was very very steep! Kings Canyon (270m high) was beautiful with views of the vast nothingness out there. We saw the Lost City and the Garden of Eden. We finished the walk late morning and headed off to cook up our last lunch before we started the long drive to Alice Springs, where we arrived that evening. This trip was great; we drove over 3000km from Adelaide to Alice Springs entertaining ourselves on the journey playing bus cricket, reading and sleeping! I loved how there was was nothing for hundreds of km's apart from the odd ... read more

Day 124 - Kings Canyon to Finke River Rest Area via Kathleen Springs The alarm went off at 6.30 this morning and we gleefully ignored it! We’re heading back towards Alice Springs today but we’re travelling with Tony and Jane so there’s no need to leave at the crack of dawn which is a blessing! We haven’t managed to upload the Uluru blogs yet which is a shame, we had internet access there but we were doing so much during the day we just ran out of time to get them uploaded. There’s no Telstra coverage here but they do offer a WIFI service of 6 minutes for $1 which is pretty cheap so we pay $5 and get two of the blogs on. Sorry for not replying to your Skype shout Ed, we’ll definitely catch ... read more

Day 123 - Kings Canyon Another day dawns, another walk to be done! This part of Australia has so many magnificent walks but you do get sore feet after a few days! Nevertheless we packed up our sandwiches in the old rucksack and smiled, smiled, smiled! The ‘Happy Hour’ gang were already up and showered but we were first out of the campsite and the first to arrive at the walking shelter! Not that it’s a race of course but we need a head start on the others because they are bound to catch us up along the way! On arrival at the car park we find tour buses parked up with one group just getting themselves ready. The challenge is now on to strike out in front so we don’t have a massive crowd of ... read more

Day 122 - Yulara to Kings Canyon Last night we’d introduced ourselves to the new family camped behind us, well more accurately we’d complemented them on their dog which sort of started the conversation. The German Shepherd was beautiful and it turned out that she was a fully trained assistance dog for the young lady owner who was travelling with her family. We chatted for a while and then left them to the rest of their evening. We heard them outside for a short time and then as the night progressed things went quiet. Then morning arrived, well, I say morning but we reckon it was 5.30am if that and all hell was breaking loose! What a row, no need for the alarm clock again today! Awoken from our slumber we gave sunrise one more shot! ... read more

Day 11 9/8/2009 Ayres Rock to Kings Canyon Left mid morning heading to Kings Canyon. Easy drive today as the road was tar all the way and stopping at Curtin Springs for fuel and lunch under the trees again. Fuel $1.70 per litre. From there we turned off and headed north on Luritja Road to Kings Canyon. We called into Kings Creek Station which is a cattle station offering services similar to Curtin Springs but on a bigger scale - Fuel, accommodation, meals, souvenirs and camel, quad bike or helicopter rides. Very neat and tidy and staff very friendly. From there it was only a short drive to Kings Canyon, approx 38 km. The Kings Canyon Resort is on the other side of the canyon offering accommodation for all budget levels. The camping ground was well ... read more
