Deel 7: dond. 22 sept.

We left Uluru and Katja Tjuta which had been an amazing experience and we joined a coach travelling to Kings Canyon. The coach was quite empty but we did meet a couple from Bridgewater in the UK called Sue and Nigel (Bob your home town) and they did know someone in their town with the surname of Rich. They had travelled quite extensively and were later going on to Fiji before returning home to the UK. Sue I hope you manage to read our blog and pick up some useful tips for a trip to New Zealand as we are sure you will both love it. The coach journey to the Kings Canyon was long and even in the air conditioned coach it was extremely hot as it motored along dead straight roads. We passed by ... read more

The following day took us north to Watarraka National Park and Kings Canyon where we rose early to walk the 6kms loop, Kings Canyon Rim Walk and to avoid the heat of the day. The initial steep climb took us to the start of the rim walk passing buttressed domes of the Lost City and the sheltered Garden of Eden with permanent waterholes and lush vegetation offering a welcome swimming opportunity to cool down half way round the walk. From the sheer cliff edge we could see more than 100 metres over the palm forest below and watched the changing colours of the rock face as the sun cast different shades onto the canyon. It was a fantastic walk and although quite demanding well worth every step, the views from the top were truly spectacular. A ... read more

The alarm didn’t go off so we had a rather rushed morning trying to get off site for 10am. Hot and flustered we then had a 4 hour drive in the oven like temperature to Kings Canyon. After much convincing Andy finally agreed to do the 6km walk round the rim of the canyon. The only problem was that we had arrived during the hottest part of the day. As we were getting ready to set off we saw Frank and Manon who were just returning from the same walk. They told us that the first part of the walk was tough but that it was well worth the effort. I knew that the first part included a steep climb up 100m cliff face, but I had decided not to mention this to Andy in fear ... read more

Thursday - traveled to Kings Canyon which is 300km north of both Kata Tjuta and Uluru. Like Uluru, there is a resort here which is more like a little settlement with options for accommodation. It was a pretty hot day so when we arrived we stayed out of the sun until about 6pm before going on the Creek walk in the gorge at Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon is quite different to both Uluru and KataTjuta, red sediments of rock, with huge willowy grasses, bright flowers, trees and shrubs lining the layers of the red, rocky outcrops. The creek walk takes you past huge gums coolibahs and cycads!. Birds everywhere and happy to let you wander by. The perfume was thick from the heat and the budgies everywhere. We are only spending one day here so we ... read more

Day 86 Alice Springs to Kings Canyon (Mon 27th Sept) Today we had a free morning in Alice Springs. We had to check out of our hostel at 1000 so most of us slept in until than and then left our bags in the storage room. We were leaving at 1230, so we had a few hours to explore. Alice Springs was a lovely little town. It was very clean, and I really noticed how equipped it was for wheelchairs. There were ramps everywhere, and even easy access to the car parks. Strange the things you notice sometimes. I walked into town, which was only about 15 minutes from the hostel, and spent a couple hours just wandering. Did a little shopping, finally managed to send off my postcards, and took a few pictures. Very relaxed ... read more

We had a good rest with our extra blankets and set out to complete the additional walks around the Kings Canyon Resort. The weather was cool but clear. The first walk was the Kings Canyon Valley walk, where we could view the canyon walls we had seen from the rim yesterday. This walk was much easier on the body. We next went down the road to the Kathleen Springs and walked up the valley to the spring. This area had been home to the Aboriginals and was later farmed as it had a secure water supply for the cattle. After lunch we walked around the Kings Canyon Resort Ridge Walk - a mini experience of the main canyon rim walk but much easier on the body. This will be our last night at this resort so ... read more

Today we arose after a cold night and went down to do the Kings Canyon Rim Walk. This is advertised as suitable for fit walkers and it was with a little trepidation that we started up the steep face to the top of the canyon wall. Once we got to the top the views were spectacular and the walk traversed different environments. They were a mixture of the Kirigini Gorge and the Bungle Bungle sandstone domes. The recent rains had left water in the gorge streams and everything was very green. During the walk we met a lovely English couple who we discovered have been to many of the Middle Eastern Countries we have been to. We are going to send them information about the drive we did from Darwin to Perth as they want to ... read more
