13 to 13

Hello there from our Families - Rohan, Jacqui, Ruby, Jemima and Joe - and Rob, Bron, Jack and Emma. We are launching the road trip of the century, called '13 to 13' on the 13th of September, 2008. We'll be travelling through central Australia, accross the red dirt all the way up to Darwin. So many adventures await us....now...if only the Stocker camper trailer were ready in time....

Well. Here we are. Not quite over, but nearly. We're having a drink and talking about not wanting to go home. We are just home from Mindil market and we watched another beautiful sunset from the beach there. The sun sets quickly here. A burnt orange orb that only lasts a few minutes. But the sky changes colours for some time afterwards. The day began on quite a sour note. Ro's wallet and phone were stolen from the ledge of the tent overnight. He woke early and realised that his phone was missing, and then his wallet. He has been very particular about bringing the valuables inside the tent and keeping them next to him as he sleeps. The night that he doesn't do that is the night that a near-do-well is lurking. A good result ... read more

Rob slept in and Bron, Jack and Em were out the tent door by 20 past 7 and it was already 28 degrees. We headed to the small suburb of Parap for their weekly Saturday morning market. It was a small shopping strip, similar to the likes of Elwood village. Running down the centre were brightly coloured stalls. There was the most amazing fruit and veg - 3 mangoes for $1. It was apparent that a lot of locals did their weekly shop there. Asian stalls were creating mouth watering treats in front of our eyes, you can't get much fresher than that! We each had a freshly squeezed juice, which were magnificent and then meandered our way throughout the stalls. There was clothing, souvenirs, amazing art and craft and the flower stalls were incredible. I ... read more

Day Twenty Eight Joe’s Birthday. Seven years old. Little man. He woke early, of course. We had a few presents for him (he’s already had some gifts before we left home) and the girls gave him their gifts. Can’t believe seven years have gone by. Jack and Emma gave him some more presents at breakfast and then we made some rolls for lunch and headed out to the Crocodylus Park. Happy birthday Joe, it was a prviledge to be able to share the day with you, love the Martins. Off to Crocodylus Park. We were there in tiime to see the feeding of the crocs at 10. The lady behind the jump (as Rob would say) tried to involve us all, asking where people were from and then we headed to the breeding pens. Wow some ... read more

Day Twenty Seven A REALLY early start for some 13s this morning. Rob, Jack, Ro and Jemima were up at 4.45am and ready for some fishing on the open seas. They were hopeful of a big catch. More later. The rest of us went into Darwin for some souvenir shopping. The adjective most used was ‘tacky’ and we laughed a lot about suitable recipients for some of the more atrocious souvenirs. For example: Stuffed Cane Toads holding mini bottles of Jim Beam; kangaroo scrotums; crocodile-hand back scratchers; koala purses; Aboriginal baby dolls; platypus salt and pepper shakers; wallabies made out tiny white shells; stationery sets complete with singing birds; koala air fresheners; and cane toad head key rings. We were so overwhelmed by bad merchandise made in China that we had to sit down for a ... read more

A very holiday type day today. An easy morning. Rob was up and off early, taking the Kia in for her 15000km service and a well earned clean. Now we are a convoy of one clean and one filthy black vehicle. The rest of us read the paper, did the washing, ate a leisurely breakfast. Ro fiddled around with the camper trailer. Just before lunch we took off to Berry Springs which is just outside of Darwin and apparently a fave with the locals. Beautiful parkland around the springs which are quite large. They have a gentle current that takes you from one large pool to another, and then another. Palm trees lean over the water to make a tunnel accross the water. Right at the start is a small waterfall and the kids (and the ... read more

Morning everyone. It was an early get up courtesy of Ro this day. He wanted to get up early and beat the heat. That didn't really work though, it was hot at 7am already. A quick brekky and another pack up, or should i say, the last pack up for the mums and kids. The flies were atrocious, sticky and there seemed to be hundreds of them. The Bushmans and Tropical Aeroguard had no effecct whatsoever, i even wondered it they helped to attract them. The dirt was black so by the end of the pack up so were we all. Black and stinky. Hit the road and off to the Magnetic Termite Mounds about 6 ks from our camp. They were enormous and looked like an old cemetary in the bush. They were cornered off ... read more

What a busy day! Firstly the big boys went off driving down the 4WD track close by to our campsite, but they didn't think much of it. Bron was concerned about any damage to her Kia. Then we headed off for a tour of many of the highlights of Litchfield. We started by finding the Lost City. The sign to get to the Lost City has been amusing me for the last couple of days. Getting there is via another 4WD track that runs for about 10km, was quite sandy and a bit bumpy but not too bad for us sooks in the passenger seat. The Territory made it through fine thanks Lawrence. The Lost City is a group of rock structures and columns that have eroded over time and resemble the buildings and archways etc ... read more

Packed up the Kakadu campsite and left the National Park with a heavy heart. One more swim in the Cooinda pool cooled us down before the long drive ahead. The road out of Kakadu is a long one since the park covers more than 20000 square kilometres. We drove through beautiful flood plains, over the alligator river in many spots, through groves of different trees and termite mounds and grey rocks. We drove nearly into Darwin and then back out again and down to Litchfield National Park. We have heard such good things about this place and cant wait to get there. We drive into the park and around to Wangi Falls, a superb spot, only to be told that we cant really stay there as ‘they’ will be demolishing the facilities soon. So we dip ... read more

A beautiful morning in Kakadu. It is a bit cooler and the smoky haze from the day before has gone. Ro has gone fishing on a charter that left at 6am. (Ro will blog about his trip later). The rest of us are going to Jabiru and then onto to Ubirr to look at some Aboriginal rock art. Some slight hitches involving forgotten bathers, me and petrol again, and maps left behind, meant that it took us longer to get to Ubirr than we’d planned, but we got there in the end. And it was so worth it!!! Ubirr is on the edge of Arnhem Land and is home to some of the oldest and largest rock art in Australia. Some paintings date back 5000 years. Most of the rock art sites are multi-layered. Apparently it ... read more

October 3rd 2008

Hi all,Bron here. A day behind but we lost connection. Anyway, here goes nothing. Up early (nothing new yet) and headed to the cultural centre here at Cooinda. The Kakadu info brochure indicated a snack bar ( we presumed coffee) but no. We also presumed that it would be air conditioned, wrong again. But, the information was fantastic. It was based on the culture of the local tribes and included artifacts, movies, photos , fantastically set out but incrediby stifling. As i am blogging (Ken this is for you) Ro is taking photos and rob and i are not particuarly impressed. Maybe they will end up on the blog, who knows. Anyway back to the resort for that long awaited latte and we then head to the Yellow Water Cruise. An hour and a half of ... read more
