An early start to the day as we headed out to Katherine Gorge for a dawn breakfast cruise to gorges 1 and 2 (there are 13 in total of course!). we drove out to Nitmiluk National Park and boarded the boat at 7am. Yummy breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushies, sausages and beans. You could have cereal or bread too and some of the kids had something of everything. Our guide was a big, bearded guy called Taffy and, although he looked Aboriginal, he spoke with an English accent, so who knows where he was from. He knew an awful lot about Katherine Gorge and has been driving boats along there for 13 years (of course!). It's hard to describe the magnificence of Katherine Gorge. God given wonder. The walls of the gorge are so high, ... read more

This is Jacqui, acting as Rob's representative. No, nothing. There was a challenge tonight. Bron and Emma saw 28 geckos. Shocking nights sleep by all last night by all adults and at least 2 children. Emma was still crook with heat stroke/ temperature and tummy ache. And Joe has continued to roll out of his bed and all around the tent, waking all and sundry with his complaints. Anyway, despite this, up and at them this morning and off to the Cutta Cutta Caves. "bomp-bomb" sound effect from 'Family Fued'. They are still having technical problems out there which, apparently means they've had a rock fall. So, 60kms of fuel wasted, second day in a row. We headed back into Katherine and went to the Information centre. From there to the (air conditioned) shopping centre for ... read more

.How come no-one is responding to the blog? Is this a conspiracy? Other drivers have stopped waving back to me. I may have to find a good therapist in Katherine. Day Fifteen saw us leave Bitter Springs at about 9am and we made it to Katherine at 10 after a slow drive in. The Stockers vehicle, with Jacqui at the helm, was dangerously low on fuel. Rohan, pretending he didn't know this, chose to be a passenger in the Martin car. With 40km to go, we only had 35km left in the tank, and none of us were keen to walk the last 5km into town. Not happy Jan. So I slowed down to about 90km p/h and we made it into the first servo we could find. Bron's Dad would be proud of me, wiping ... read more

Day Thirteen The thirteenth day of our thirteen-to-thirteen trip. What a rippa! We were up at 5.30am to beat the sun and make it out to the Devils Marbles in time for the sunrise. The Marbles are about 30km from Wycliffe Well, so we were there at around 6. These rock formations are much more vast that we were expecting and as the sun began to appear we were all gob-smacked at their beauty and size. The rocks apparently began as squares or rectangles of granite, but time and wind and weather have eroded them, so they now resemble marbles stacked on top of one another. Of course they are not all perfectly round, and there are great stacks of them. Many have split, one in particular looked like an Easter egg split in two. It ... read more

Day Twelve Left Alice behind today with a collective sigh of relief. We’re all ready to move on and it felt good to be on the road again. Last night we went to a ‘star talk’, an organised event at the caravan park. At 7pm we trundled up the hill and listened to a bloke who takes his stars very seriously. He told us about planets vs stars; that Alpha Century is in fact two stars rotating around one another, not just one star; how to find the South Pole; and where the Milky Way is found. He pointed out many of the star constellations and the kids had a turn looking through the telescope. Emma blogging now….Today we packed up camp at Alice Springs and started driving to Wycliffe Well, the UFO capital of Australia. ... read more

Hi Y'all. Turning country up here. Even listening to the country hour on ABC Alice Springs. Can you hear the fiddles? Ran out of power last night, sorry. To finish off, the storm calmed, but the dust turned the sky an eery orange colour. It was much quieter at this caravan park last night and we all slept well. This morning we left for a day out after Bron had finished fighting with a washing machine. We went first to Ellery Creek Big Hole, which is about an hour out of Alice along Larapinta Drive. It is one of the largest, permanent water holes in the West Macdonnell Ranges. It has freezing water, so there was no swimming, but it was great to see the contrasts of the green water, the blue sky and the red ... read more

Hi all, love your messages, keep em coming. Hey Craig, everyone else can see our fab photos. I thought u were a technical wizard like Doc, perhaps i was wrong? Today started at the Alice Springs Desert Park. It's like a big garden divided into seperate desert areas, river, sand and woodlands. We saw an amazing bird show with millenium falcons, magpies, a boo book owl and black kites. Fab. Amazing avaries and an incredible nocturnal house. All the animals in there were awake and seemed to be putting on their own show for us. A king brown was climbing a tree, a bilby was just running and running, geckoes, snakes, bats, hopping mice, malas thorny devils, tawny frogmouths, just to name a few. It was hot though. We all seem to be tired. We each ... read more

Day Eight Just to finish off yesterday…After we returned to camp from the internet debarcles - sorry no photos were published but there was a glitch with travelblog and they wouldn’t let us upload - we had a hurried sandwich and set off for a camel riding adventure. Only Jack, Emma, Ruby, Mima, Joe and myself were brave enough to actually mount the camel train and take part, the others were scaraedy cats. We were treated to the very excellent service of the ‘camela’ who did her very best to talk us out of taking the 15 minute trip because it was “just too hot for anything” and by yelling at the kids and being generally disinterested in my probing quiestions about camels. She even took her chances yelling at Rob, “Get off me bench would ... read more
