We decided to make the most of living so central, and having a great view from the flat on New Year’s Eve, inviting some friends over along with Andy & Jess and their friends to enjoy some nibbles and drinks. Between us all we cooked up an impressive spread with sausage rolls (of course), a vegetarian alternative to sausage rolls involving pesto, basil and mushrooms, spinach dip, asparagus and parma ham, mushroom caps and chocolate dipped strawberries. There were a few of Andy and Jess’ friends who had bought tickets to the Opera Bar – these were the hottest tickets in town with uninterrupted views of the Harbour Bridge, but you had to pay for it with £300 tickets just for entry! So these guys came over late afternoon for a few drinks and nibbles before ... read more

So our time in Thailand came to an end and we decided to save some money and experience the train network in Thailand. As a condition to this, Sam insisted we travelled first class...I happily obliged. We left our luxury resort at 3pm on Wednesday by taxi which took us to the port of Koh Phangan, where we picked up our 2 hour ferry, which could only be described as a floating shack, to Donsak. From here the plan was to get a prebooked minibus to Surat Thani...which was full when we arrived...leaving us no option but to wait for his mate to pick us up. Eventually his mate arrived, and after Sam made friends with a drunk French man who called women stupid and had a prositute for a wife, we embarked on our 2 ... read more

Jo had an early start with our flat mate Jess today, as they went to watch the 8am rubber duck racing in Darling Harbor. The V8 Sydney 500 Races are on at the old Olympic Park at the weekend so the V8 drivers have been signed up for some local publicity stunts in the week leading up to it – this was one of the more embarrassing ones. The rubber ducks were inflatable’s about 3metres tall which the drivers had to climb inside and use paddles to get themselves around the course in Darling Harbor. They were also up against a couple of V8 Fans who had ‘won’ the chance to race against them in a rubber duck. The V8 fans could have perhaps benefitted from a little training as they were left for dust, spinning ... read more

Will finished work a little early and was taken for drinks at Bungalow 8 in Darling Harbour by his company. Jo joined a little later in the evening and we both enjoyed a few post-work drinks watching the sun go down across the Harbour whilst getting to know Will’s new work colleagues a little better. After a few drinks it was time to find some dinner, so a group of Will’s work colleagues and we moved on to the Steak House next door to enjoy some Oysters, Steak and Malbec! After dinner the drinks trolley was brought across to our table and we selected some post dinner beverages. Will and the other guys decided to go for the ‘special liquor’ which was not displayed on the standard drinks trolley, but instead was kept locked in the ... read more

It has been very muggy for most of this week, but today we had a brilliant thunder storm which has cleared the air a little. We watched storm approaching from the balcony which gave us a pretty good view of the black storm clouds rolling in from West Sydney and the Fork Lightning coming down across the skyline. However we quickly retreated when the rain reached us and watched the rest of the storm play out from the comfort of our sofa. Quite an awesome site to watch from the 46th Floor!... read more

The flight in was good. Technically I drank and watched movies for 2 days straight since I crossed the international dateline. Lets just say I think I did some good damage to their Bacardi stash. My first day in Sydney was very interesting to say the least. First I found out that verizon wireless phones (at least mine) is not compatible with SIM cards. So I had to use the payphone to try and call contacts in Sydney. After several dollars I was finally able to determine where to meet and headed off to the train station. The walk home from the station was a little tough considering it was like 80 degrees outside. I can't complain about the weather but it is a little tougher when you have to carry your suitcase up and down ... read more

It’s been pretty windy and stormy in Sydney recently, and we’d been trying to book a trip to go whale watching from Darling Harbour for a few days, but each time we would check in the morning and the trip would be cancelled due to bad weather. Today luck was on our side, and although it was a little overcast the wind wasn’t too high, so the trip was running. We got an early train into Sydney and found ourselves a coffee shop in Darling Harbour to grab a cuppa and banana bread whilst we called a few people to sort out viewing some flats for later in the day. We got the 10.45 super fast whale watching experience – this was on a speed boat as opposed to the other option of the ferry – ... read more

We took another trip into the city today but were met with yet more travel issues – this time a delayed train due to a woman giving birth on the train in front of us… only in The Shire!! We went back to the Westfield Centre to sort out our Mobile phones which are now fully up and running – so you can expect texts coming your way with our new numbers. We decided to take a look around the Aquarium today… dugongs (Australian manatee), angel shark, grey nurse shark, leopard shark, black tipped reef shark, starfish, crayfish, Nemo, a few more lego creatures… we saw them all!! And Jo even got the special honour of seeing a sea cucumber drop a poo! We had lunch in Cockle Bay, overlooking Darling Harbour, accompanied by a seagull ... read more

Today is our last day in Sydney and we were without our wonderful tour guide, Meg, so I hauled out my Lonely Planet Australia to see what it recommended. Darling Harbour sounded like it could be interesting and then we planned on heading back to the the Rocks later in the day to hopefully catch the market that we kept missing. We were still resisting the $20 per person breakfast at the hotel but discovered that the huge hostel across the street had a restaurant on the ground floor and they served a very reasonably priced breakfast so we went there for food. I wish we'd gone sooner! Matt got eggs benedict and I got what resembled a full English breakfast (eggs, toast, tomato, hashbrowns, mushrooms, beans) and we both got juice...for $24 for the two ... read more
