After travelling back in time (leaving at 1pm and arriving at 6am the same day) we landed in the land of opportunity at LAX...knackered! We arrived at our hostel at 7am only to be told we couldn't check in until 2 30pm...great! So off we went for a very long walk around LA. We stumbled across an amazing outdoor shopping complex where we had lunch and enjoyed the sunshine...this was the life! After an early night (which wasn't as early as we hoped due to a CSI marathon being on TV) we were up bright and early for the LA city tour...this took us to all the famous sites you associate with LA - the Hollywood sign, celebrity houses (beckhams, elvis presleys, Michael Jackson) even to a house Bernie Ecclestone bought for $85 million, containing 123 ... read more

We arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand after a short 3 hour flights and the 5am start around 3pm to pick up our campervan/home for the next 3 weeks. With baited breath we were shown our graffitted people carrier - thankfully it wasn't as bad as we were expecting considering we went for the cheapest thing around! After stopping off at Westfield for a snack and pillows etc we set our sights on Queenstown, only the underestimate the size of New Zealand and at 10pm, starving and after being up for 18 hours we were still looking for a place to stay for the night around a third of the way to Queenstown. This was proving very hard and after an hour of searching in the pitch black, deserted roads with no phone signal we came across ... read more

We arrived in Melbourne after a 12 hour coach journey to rain and cold...something we are not accustomed too! We previously had decided that as we were going to be in Melbourne for around 3 weeks we would ditch the hostels and find ourselves a flat...which was more stressful than we thought!! After hours of searching on the internet for flats, we managed to get 2 flat viewings so we headed to the first with great optimissum with no sleep! The optimissum soon disappeared! What can only be described as an unwashed tramp answered the door to the flat which stunk of the 18 year old cat which lived there! After a few minutes of making small talk (while holding our breath) and been asked if we were ok with the weed addiction we made our ... read more

Apologies for the recent silence... So...after we finished our time on The Whitsunday's we got the coach overnight for 12 hours down to Hervey Bay, ready for our trip out to Fraser Island, and checked into probably our nicest hostel there. However, the joy of the nice hostel was short lived as Sam after a morning of complaining and trying to milk whatever sympathy she could - not getting much in return from me - decided to show everyone what she had eaten in the past 24 hours and continued being sick for the rest of the day! After a while we decided the best thing was to find a doctor to see what was wrong...i asked the hostel owner, Bill, and as it was a saturday afternoon all the doctors were closed so he turned ... read more

So after a hectic Christmas and New Year, we headed up to the tropics in the North - starting with Cairns. We were picked up from the airport by a woman from the hostel we had booked who was from Sam's home town of Basildon and headed out to our retro/arty hostel, complete with tropical swimming pool, palm trees and hammocks. After having a little stroll around Cairns that evening, I was shocked that at how small Cairns was - i was expecting a small city...and Sam was chuffed that we were finally up to the 40C mark, although the Thai humidity was back again! Our first full day in Cairns we did was every backpacker does in Cairns and booked our trip to the Great Barrier Reef for the following day! The day started early! ... read more

After spending a few days chilling out and relaxing on Coogee Beach, waiting for the Geordie Boys to arrive, we decided to get off our back sides and research about the places we were going to be staying over the christmas period. Checking on trip advisor we were thrilled to see that the hostel we were booked into the next day, had been described as "falling down" and "infested with bed bugs and cockroaches". On this advice, we decided to start looking elsewhere...with only a couple of days until christmas (one of Sydney's busiest times) - we knew we were pushing our luck. Another problem was that Naz and Ric were blissfully unaware as they were flying from Singapore, heading straight for that hostel when they arrived! The only way of stopping them going straight to ... read more

So our time in Thailand came to an end and we decided to save some money and experience the train network in Thailand. As a condition to this, Sam insisted we travelled first class...I happily obliged. We left our luxury resort at 3pm on Wednesday by taxi which took us to the port of Koh Phangan, where we picked up our 2 hour ferry, which could only be described as a floating shack, to Donsak. From here the plan was to get a prebooked minibus to Surat Thani...which was full when we arrived...leaving us no option but to wait for his mate to pick us up. Eventually his mate arrived, and after Sam made friends with a drunk French man who called women stupid and had a prositute for a wife, we embarked on our 2 ... read more

After spending 2 days sunworshipping...well me sitting in the shade giving my designer patch work sunburns time to heal we decided to go out exploring...and for this we hired ourself a wee scooter, for the costly price of 3 pound a day! I would tell you were we went however I really do not know. We literally got on the scooter, turned right out of our resort and drove...would tell you how fast we went but the speedo wasn't working either so I might be getting a speeding ticket coming my way! We stumbled across a lovely little beach somewhere and me being me, again declared I was hungry so we embraced the thai culture and went to our second irish bar of the trip for bangers and mash! With light fading and the petrol running ... read more

When we arrived at our resort, I was over the moon...nice little bungalow on the beach...looked lovely, from the outside and in the dark...so we dumped our bags and went out for dinner as predictably i was STARVING! We asked the hotel manager where was good to eat and he recommended there was a nice fish restaurant just 300m down the road so we followed his advice and it lead us to a corregated iron shed on the corner of a main road! interesting experience to say the least...made even more special by the random dogs coming in to greet you off the street and the monsoon rain which soon followed, soaking us on the way home...it was still 30 odd degrees so i didnt mind so much. When we returned to our delightful little bungalow ... read more

Hi all, well...after being stuck on the runway at Heathrow for an extra hour and a half and circling over Bangkok for an extra 20 minutes we finally arrived in Bangkok. (I prepared myself for what lay ahead by watching the Hangover 2 on the plane) After walking for what seemed like miles...with Sam moaning her back was hurting from her bag - this was still in the airport...we got a taxi to the centre of Bangkok - white knuckle ride to put it mildly. The hostel was a pleasant surprise...lovely and clean but that is probably partly due to the fact you have to leave your shoes outside...which is more than you can say for the rest of Bangkok - open sewers, dirty/smelly river etc. We've been here for a day and a half and ... read more
