Sydney - Day 20
Published: April 3rd 2013Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourWoke at 09:00 to a foggy day, looked out the window and saw that it actually heavy showers. After tea, toast and shower we donned the Boyes cheap waterproof jackets we got for Cairns but had no use for, then walked down Pitt street. Mooched round the Westfield shopping centre, then headed further down and ... bought a replacement document wallet in lime green (how exciting!) Had latte and banana bread / cherry muffin then onto the Rocks and Circular Quay. Toyed with becoming stowaways on the Caribbean 'Rhapsody of the Seas' loading passengers (who wouldn't), and took some photos from the International Passenger Terminal observation area not discovered before the before the camera battery died. We then walked back under the Harbour Bridge and through Hyde Park, bumping into our artist friend en route so ... read more
Sydney - Day 19 (rest day)
Published: April 3rd 2013Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourRose after Brian made tea and fruit loaf toast around 10:00 to a warm sunny day. No hangover, but just fancied a rest day wandering round. Mooched round Market City, and Darling Harbour (had coffee and sandwich) then souvenir shops near the apartment. Investigated hiring a car and getting to the northern beaches. Made dinner with the remaining chicken then popped out for a couple of Oxford street drinks. Early night for once.... read more
Day 48: Australia Day in Sydney
Published: January 29th 2013Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourThe 26th January is celebrated as 'Australia Day' marking the first day the ships arrived with the convicts aboard, back in 1788. Think 'queens jubilee' or 'independence day' -type celebrations, with flags, music, food etc. We caught the train from Emu Plains to central Sydney arriving mid-morning and headed up to The Rocks and Darling Harbour for the celebrations. The main programme started at 7pm with numerous speeches and the ships and tall ship parade around the harbour. This was followed by a pretty spectacular firework and light display finale! After a long day on our feet we caught the train back to pick up the campervan and had a brief drive to Sun Valley to visit my cousins Alison & Simon (who had kindly taken us in for the ... read more

I arrived in Sydney earlier this afternoon and concluded my two week tour of the east coast of Australia! I've had a brilliant time, met lots of interesting people and learned a lot about Australia, I've also done my fair share of partying of course. I'm now staying at the Wake Up hostel on Pitt Street for 5 nights which takes me up to Wednesday 25th April, also known as Anzac Day for aussies. It's their national memorial day for veterans and it's held on 25th April every year as that's the first day that Aussies/Kiwis served for their country in it's own right, as opposed to serving in the British army. Apparently it's a big deal and there's usually a lot of drinking and gambling as well as the standard memorial services, so I plan ... read more

Published: March 28th 2012Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourWe woke up and there was birds chirping while they were flying. It was a sunny day and the weather person said it was "humid and 29 degrees". Today we were going to the aquarium in Darling Harbour! The aquarium is full of marine species, sharks and weird sea animals. While we were walking there, it was quite crowded and line was full of families with young childrens. The line up took around 20 minutes!! SO LONG and it was really humid, which made it worse. FINALLY WE GOT IN. It was a really nice aquarium and it was quite big aswell. We spent a couple of hours there and then headed off to find lunch somewhere. By the time we found something to eat, it was 2pm. We then headed back to the hotel and ... read more
Day 12 - Sydney Tower
Published: March 28th 2012Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourI woke up at 7pm, got changed, ate breakfast and did everything else. It was a sunny day and the temperature was 28 degrees. The streets weren't crowded, because it was a Wednesday and people were at work. We were going to walk down the city and going to the Sydney Eye Tower. We walked down and took the first left turn. Once we were there, we brought the tickets and it came with a 4-D movie. We watched it and it was epic. After that we went to the Sydney Eye Tower. It was really high up in the sky and some people even went to the top of the tower and outside ! It was a very good view at the Sydney Tower. We spent 1 hour at the tower. After that, the temperature ... read more
Thursday 8th Having integrated my Melbourne visit into sights in the last blog. Let me just say that I recommend it highly. Do go if you're in the area. On the last night I went out with a couple of French sorts (as they used to say in 1980s hit sitcom 'Only Fools and Horses' do you remember that hilarious scene where the primary protagonist Derrick "del-boy" Trotter mistakenly horizontalises through the open bar? I nearly laughed my cranium off) to the pubs in Fitzrovia which on the one hand is not dissimilar from the name sake area of London, but on the other hand is well different. We "hit" a few bars until about 2 o'clock in the MORNING (I know, crazy) and exchanged drinking games, finally reconciling centuries of mutual hatred and conflict between ... read more
...Brisbane...Sydney....
Published: February 22nd 2012Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling HarbourSo one of the highlights of the trip so far was definately our stop in Brisbane as we were able to see Kim our friend from Uni again! Was so niice being able to catch up with her! Made our way to Brisbane from Noosa, for once it didnt take long and everything ran on time so it didnt feel as though our entire day had been wasted moving about. The area of Brisbane Kim lives in is such a nice place and had such a good vibe to it, there were actually proper shops again and bars all within walking distance which made such a change for us! It felt so bizzare being back in a city...within 24hrs hours we caved in and started wearing make-up again and actually straightened our hair!! it was bliss! ... read more
Sydney - Day Two

We also went to the Powerhouse Museum which was interesting, Amanda tried to ride a penny-farthing which was impossible with her short legs, and there was a clock that was amazing so we waited and watched the demonstration and hearing all about it. We found the Chinese Gardens which we looked through and had some Chinese Tea and Sweets. We went to the Wildlife Park and saw a Koala, Kangaroo, Snakes and heaps more. WE TOUCHED A SNAKE!!... read more
