An odd thing happened in Sydney: me and Al got chatting to a couple, and on hearing the unmistakable Northern twang i asked where they were from...'Newcastle' was the reply. Its always a happy coincidence, there's not a lot of geordie travellers. Where in Newcastle? 'Jesmond'. This was a bit stranger. I asked if the girl knew the Peoples Theatre, and Jesmond Park East. Turns out, among lots of flabbergasted noises, that we lived just a couple of minutes away from each other, on either side of Armstrong Bridge. Not only that, but her mum had gone from living in Jesmond Park West, an extention of our road, and had married Charles Harrison, father of Jack, a childhood friend, and now lived in Melbury, literally round the corner! Weird. Lovely couple too. Anyway. We caught our ... read more

Well we managed to fit in a few days of surfing thanks to our buddy Mike. If you read this...Thanks Mike! Tenneal also managed to show me up by going Bungee Jumping. She was really scared, she got in the crane, went to the top and jumped off within the first 5 minures. I wouldive been up there for ages followed by the crane bringing me back down. Our last few days in Sufers, were spent...wait for it.....SuRfInG....I get a bit better every time. Thats what I tell myself anyways..:) We had a BBQ on our last night and we left Surfers the following morning with tears in our eyes. The tears dried as soon as we got here (Byron Bay). This place is awesome. We have registered for our open water dives. We are going ... read more

Not much to report really. I bought some Aboriginal art, a couple of photos and I played a lot of Digeridoos. They rock. Now I'm bracing myself for an 11 hr bus journey. Fun!... read more

After travelling up the coast from Sydney - newscastle - port Macquarie - kempsey - coffs harbour we arrived at Byron Bay which was a well needed 7 day break. Byron is a small backpackers hub, full of internet cafes and excursion agents mixed with wealthyish/arty people and small boutiques that are all struggling to take over the place, so it has a air of anti tourist verses hippy type people along with local surfers trying to look cool. We really liked here, lots of nice beaches to waste the afternoons and lots of places to eat/drink. The week we got here was the build up to the yearly blues festival, so the streets were lined with musicians/buskers which was cool. We took an excursion into the rain forest to see some wildlfe and waterfalls, which ... read more

An awful nights sleep was had due to the vast size of my dorm - 16 people - and the fact that they all insisted on snoring and getting up to use the bathroom at different times. I must ensure I'm suitably pissed tonight to ensure I sleep through any repeat disturbances. I decided to make the most of being woken up early and decided to head out to see the town of byron bay. The shops are a good medly of surf shops, hippy shops and souvenier shops peppered with a liberal amount of art galleries. This seems fairly typical for Australia - the small artist owned and operated art gallery is quite prevalent. I decided to go both healthy and cheap for lunch and opted for Hare Krishna run cafe 'Cardomon pod' for one ... read more

DNA Codex Crystal Healing As the coach pulled into Byron Bay my first though was how much like a claustrophobic version of Cairns it seemed to be. My opinion soon changed as I saw some major differences. The first advert I read (amongst hundreds of similar ones!) was: "DNA Codex Crystal Healing". I dont even know what that means. It just acts to remind you that Byron was once the 'alt' hotspot on the east coast, and to an extent it has remained so in spite of the increasing commercialism that people like me bring upon it! There is still an alternative slant on everything here. There are over 100 yoga classes a day, adverts for crystal healing and day trips to drug town Nimbin are everywhere. When I check into my hostel the girl behind ... read more

Saturday April 1st Lo all from OZ! Not a lot to report today… Today we left Byron Bay, (which I found out today is the “alternative lifestyle” capital of Australia…not that there’s anything wrong with that?) and head up to Surfers Paradise. I was getting a little behind on the blog so we went out in search of a café that has hi-speed internet. We found a little one about 5 minutes away that had a really good breakfast. Jason has some really good French toast, with the rest of us eating eggs and bacon. Surfers Paradise is about 1 hour away from where we stayed, but once we got close to it the traffic really slowed down. There is a huge construction boom going on here, with mega bucks being poured into this town. Surfers ... read more

Up early to leave Byron Bay, it was looking dull so wasn't too sad to say goodbye. until... noooooo...our bus driver is Shaun again - our first ever Oz Experience driver, and man he does NOT shut up, and hes usually talking about himself. We were off to Crescent Head for the night, for an evening and morning of surf lessons. It was beautiful weather when we got there and we met the 2 crazy ozzy's that were our sufing instrutors - Ads and Kimbo! The most Australian people we have met. The hostel was just for us, all 14 of us in an open upstairs room of a house (was pretty but hard to explain!) Everyone went surfing but sadly I didnt as I am really not a big fan of the water! I found ... read more
