There is a heat wave forecasted with a fire warning. Rather than drive in high risk regions we instead stay in Bermagui and give kayaking a try. We get into singles and first head towards the coast. We turn around before we reach the waves, and realize the reason we got near the mouth of the river so quickly is because we had a tail wind and the tide, which we suddenly need to fight. Progress is slow, and the wind kicks up so strongly that the sail affect of the paddles makes a large impact and there is risk of capsizing. I can see the approaching wind as it roughens the surface of the water and learn to fear it. I try not paddling at all during the gusts but it just turns me around ... read more

A ... read more

We got a bargain when it came to the Campervan! When vans go out on hire, they sometimes need them to be relocated, say from melbourne to Sydney for the next person to pick them up, thats where we come in! We had 3 days to drive the little campervan from Melbourne to Sydney at the huge sum of 5 aus dollars a day and we got our petrol paid for, good times!! After the trauma with the passports we were only about an hour behind and on our way! We planned to stop off at some national park land called Cape Conrad over the first night and this was 400KM away. The drive was mostly inland today and although pretty it rained....and rained and rained, a bit like England. By the time we arrived at ... read more

Today we got up packed our bags and tried to get out of Sydney without being driven over this was not easy and in the end it took almost one hour to leave town. We learned that the definition of Highway has a different meaning here than at home!!! So driving 250 km took five hours. But it was worth it as the views we got in the Royal National Park and Murramarang National Parks were breath taking. Just before we arrived in Batemans Bay where we spent the night we turned of the highway onto a small dirt road leading us to Pebbly Beach. We had read that kangaroos often come to this beach at dusk and low and behold as we walked onto the beach three kangaroos hopped straight past us! We spent about ... read more

81 days to go. I managed to find a way to get 2 extra flights in. Donna will thank me for that because she LOVES take off and landing, especially in small planes. Why fly direct from Moruya to Sydney, thus having to wait for 6 hours or so for our international connection, when there is another way? Moruya to Merimbula (south) then back (north) to Sydney! Totally illogical. But it brings the total number of take-offs to (I think) 17. Hopefully there will be the same number of landings. If there is not I am sure you will hear. Gotta go - time to pack.... read more

Canberra We stayed at Ulladulla for one night. The caravan park we stayed at had a massive indoor pool with 3 slides, water tipping buckets and mushrooms thing that had water coming out of it. We stayed in Canberra with our friends Liam, Connor, Chrissie, Graham and Julia. We swam in the pool everyday. They are a lot of fun. We went to the adventure play ground. The Sprowls are very fit and they all do triathelons. Graham gave me Liam's old bike. It is the best bike I have ever had. It has gears and a stand. My old bike didn't have any of those things. I am so lucky. Places we visited: The mint, The portrait gallery and the National Museum. My favourite place was the mint because I saw the machines/ robots making ... read more

Feb 5,6 Batemans Bay We wound up here by default as we had planned to head to Canberra today, but last night was a very hot, stuffy night with not a lot of sleep, and today was very hot as well. We actually started down the highway to Canberra when we both said enough is enough. We turned around and stopped off at the Tourist Information and asked them for an accommodation suggestion,. They recommended a family run motel that is comfortable, clean, with a view the bay. Best of all, it is air conditioned. What more could we ask for. Most of the day has been spent sleeping and hiding from the heat. (It is hot and humid with storms still brewing in the area. Woke up the next day to a misty rain but ... read more

4-6 November 2010 Rain rain go away! We are now in Murramarang National Park a few kms north of Batemans Bay. Every so often we get really over the rain as it would be nice to dry the tent out.. On the other hand, we have set up camp on the edge of a rainforest which is absolutely beautiful. We look out into this amazing scenery full of bird life. There are kangaroos roaming free all through the camp site as well as all over the beaches. The boys are so amazed that the kangaroos are so close and you can even pat some of them. We have been into Batemans Bay and checked out Pebbly Beach and Pretty Beach. Depot Beach (where we are staying) is the most picturesque though. Really looking forward to some ... read more

We finally managed to get on line here at my sisters house so I can start logging our adventures. We had a little hiccup coming through immigration as Doug's visa did not have his midde name so they wanted to fix that before we were allowe in the country, then they decided my beef jerky was full of disease etc and it is illegal to bring into the country so they threw it away. After we got out of the airport we headed into downtown Sydney to pick up our Spaceship that was going to be our home for the next 9 days. We spent about an hour going through the bed setup configuations and other features of the van before heading into traffic. Doug and I are learning a new language (hard right, easy left) ... read more

Australia, July 26th - August 6th , 2010 After spending exactly 3 months traveling South East Asia, we were finally going to the long awaited destination of Australia. I say long awaited because Australia is the most similar place to home that we have been to since leaving Europe in September of last year. Its a place where rooms are clean, they have toilets (that even flush) and you don’t have to carry toilet paper with you 24 hours a day. Buses run on time, they take as long as you are told they would, and you don’t have to haggle for everything that you buy. So, as much as we did like Asia, it was nice to be in a place that felt more like home. We arrived on the 5th continent of our ... read more
