Quick & dirty trip to Gonzaga University for a Job Fair. There were 3 of us that left bright & early for the hour trip over. Close to 19 inches of snow layered the ground before we arrived. Thank goodness the streets were easily managed. Spent the vast majority of our day inside the student gym amongst 80+ other exhibitors. Before leaving that day, we were invited by one of the professors to view the new simulation lab. Our plane left an an hour or so later than planned. Was glad to be home to the rain!... read more

journeying to spokane via greyhound was less than exciting, I felt very dubious at the bus station in Seattle, which felt very shaby...there was plenty of room on the bus however and The scenery became desert like after we crossed the mountains, the sky clear and blue, comfortably warm in the midday sun..... I was met in Spokane by Ian who guided me around the high lights, Japanese gardens and parks.. we all met up for supper Ian, Pam, James and Will.... The next day, which was Halloween, we visited friends (jane and John) 16 acres - an old Indian winter camp and now a retreat centre..After sauna and a dip in the creek, we shared supper then held a ceremony in an old storage cave. I called in and then we jouneyed to the land ... read more

Posted by Onaxthiel: Our drive out of Troy revealed something to us about the attitudes of the inhabitants of northwestern Montana and northern Idahos' panhandle. Namely that they hate waterfalls. Everywhere we went that had a falls in its' name or a sign for falls or rapids would then, upon closer inspection, have a dam and a sign telling us about how the residence had decided between the 1920's and the 1960's, that they liked electric lights more than scenic views. I can't say I really blame them. In my opinion, daily convenience often trumps aesthetics. It did make for a largely boring drive through the region though, as each and every anticipated beautiful vista turned out to be hydroelectric in nature. There were a few exceptions. Lake Pend Oreilly in Idaho for instance. We detoured ... read more

We sadly left beautiful Glacier National Park and headed out Route 2 through Idaho and into Washington State. When we got to Kalispell, MT there was smoke in the air everywhere - it looked thicker to the south. We stopped in Libby, MT and had lunch, did laundry and grocery shopping. We entered Idaho and gained another hour - we are now in Pacific Time Zone. Route 2 was a very nice scenic drive. Dave liked the driving and thought it was a "great way" to come into Washington. The temperature was about 90 degrees when we got out of the mountains. It was a shock to our system, we haven't seen 90's since we left home. When we left Glacier it was in the 40's. One thing we find hard to believe is that the ... read more

Our next stop was down in Missoula, Montana. Missoula is the home of a Smoke Jumper Depot...which means its a base for the fire fighters that parachute out of airplanes to put out forest and wild fires. The tour was awesome! It was led by a former smoke jumper, and we got to see the entire facility. It was a refreshing change from just looking at dioramas and replicas...about 6 jumpers came in from a drop while we were standing in their locker room. Crazy! There are actually about 22 forest fires raging right now, mostly throughout that particular region...but there are some as far south as Riverside, CA. We learned a lot about what it takes to jump into fires, how they put them out, what they bring with them on the jump, and what ... read more

Hello all, Well we have been home for over a week now and we thought that we should do one last blog since we said we would. It is good to be home and back to our comfortable surroundings. We had a bit of a whirlwind first week home. We stayed in Seattle for a few days, then traveled across the state to visit Brandon's parents, grandparents, and other family. We were planning to live in Spokane, but work has moved Brandon so we are moving back to Seattle to live. We are sad that our trip is over, but we had a great time and now we have so many memories. Thanks for everyone who has been reading our blog and posting us messages, it has kept us tied to the states. We promise to ... read more

Day 45..... So...we have picked up our next hire car - a Pontiac Grand Prix - which is a dream to drive. After a 3 hour cruise along the highway to the Olympic Mountians, our first port of call was a small Wildlife Reserve in Dungeness. The Reserve is a strip (or a 'spit' as it is known!) of beach that stretches out into the ocean, where hundreds of seabirds and Harbour Seals can be seen. We were also treated to a gorgeous sunset as the sun dipped behind the Pacific. The next morning we ventured into Olympic National Park. A stunning 17 mile drive took us up the mountains to Hurricane Ridge. At the Ridge we left the car behind and hiked up one of the peaks for a magnificent view across the valleys and ... read more

It’s been awhile since I have experienced the anticipation of the unknown. That feeling one has when you close the door of the rental car--with only a basic map in hand--and wonder not only how you’re going to find your hotel, but how you’ll get out of the parking lot. That moment of excitement when you turn the corner and catch your first glimpse of a vista that is new and unexplored expanding before you. That is what travel does for me, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s Sicily - or in this case Spokane - that is the featured destination. I am frequently queried by friends, “You’re going where? Why?” Suffice it to say they just don’t share the same sense of adventure about some of my more obscure trips. Spokane has been on my ... read more
