I broke the journey from Seattle to Spokane at Moses Lake, Washington. Some of the names of the towns in Washington State are interesting to say the least. Puyallup for example; pronounced Puh-al up, Walla Walla, Ephrata, the list goes on and on. I guess the folks that got across to the side of the United States were a mixed bunch of all nationalities that got thrown in with several tribes of American Indians with their own flair for naming areas created just the right recipe. The name “Spokane” is a Salish word which loosely translated means “children of the sun” or “land of shimmering waters.” The town was originally known as Spokane Falls because of the huge waterfall which is right in the center of the city. The summer of 1889 was very hot and ... read more

I have to admit, there was a small part of me that was worried about getting in enough money for this trip. I shouldn’t have worried, though, as I have seen God come through on countless occasions. But as the bills came in, and numbers for the Kenya portion of our trip didn’t add up, I was a little concerned. Prepared, but concerned nonetheless. So, after looking at my bank statements dozens of times, I decided to pray. Funny how we so often leave that for the last thing. As I went into the final weekend before leaving, I was confident that God would stretch what I had to cover what He had for me to do. But part of me hoped for more, because the more money we have, the more help we can be. ... read more

I can’t sleep. I never have trouble sleeping, but tonight, I can’t get there. My whole body is tired, from my eyeballs to my toes, but something in me is restless. On Wednesday, after worship, I went into the dark auditorium and just sat for a while. I’ve spent so many nights alone in that room, just me and God. He’s spoken so much to me in there. I sat in a pew, and looked, and listened, and prayed. Every time I get ready to leave for a long time, I do two things. First, I appreciate the city more. I realize just how much I love Spokane and the familiarity of it all. Also, the last few days before I take off, I spend more time in the auditorium. Often in the dark or by ... read more

On Wednesday night, I started saying goodbyes. I hate this part of leaving. I spent time with the high school students that mean the world to me, and knew that many of them I wouldn’t see until I returned from the other side of the world. The evening was filled with meeting new people, seeing old people, and great conversations. We closed the night with a great time of worship. I stood in the midst of dozens of teenagers (most of whom are taller than me) and listened as they praised their Lord for all He has done. It was as a similar gathering, nearly 10 years ago, that I first remember telling God, “anything, anytime, anywhere. I will go.” I had no idea what that would mean to me, how far it would take me, ... read more

Drive from Montana to Moses Lake WA! Day 8 Had great drive over passes from Livingston MT, through Coeur d'Alene ID, Spokane and to Moses Lake WA. Stopped for hound run in Montana near Clark Fork River along 90! Rivers moving fast. Fortunately hounds know how to swim! Mainly a driving day from Livingston MT to Moses Lake WA. We stopped in Bozeman MT (home of Montana State Univ) for a nice city park with a fenced in dog park by a pond. The mountains in the distance were snow capped and craggy. Then we headed back to I-90 and drove through MT, ID and finally reached WA! In MT, we saw more ranches, wide open spaces, and mountains. Passed through Butte MT, which was a huge copper mining area for a hundred years until they ... read more

Hey guys- I'm going to try to post a wish list of what else we're trying to come up with, but for now, the soccer balls are spoken for (woohoo!) We'd still like to take a pump, which has yet to be claimed. And as for generic stuff, any medical or dental supplies are great. Tylenol, bandaids, neosporin, toothbrushes, toothpaste, iodine... things like that. So if you want to throw a few items in your grocery basket, that would be great. Also, any school supplies- packs of paper (or whatever is left in them), pencils and pens, notebooks... Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks a ton!... read more

Hello friends! I am preparing for my next adventure. Here is the letter I sent out, which has most of the details, and I will be filling in info as it gets closer. If you want to donate money or items, contact me and I'll let you know how. I am very much a fan of allowing a big God do things through my small things... so if you'd like to save your pocket change over the next few weeks, that'd be great. If not, here are some great ways to pray. Also, right now we need 2-3 soccer balls and a pump, so if any of you want to sponsor that, it'd be awesome! Thanks! As we (Sarah and I) prepare for the trip, I'll try to post updates and photos and such, and then ... read more

Spokane seems like an odd road trip destination from Calgary but the tax-free shopping (for out of state residents), restaurant variety, charming historic Downtown core & Washington Wineries has its appeal. We didn't get a lot of studying done this past weekend but Keely got some real life experience for her upcoming Criminal Procedure exam when her car trunk was opened and searched without consent by US Border Patrol. The two border patrol guards must have overheard our jokes & comments about trunk capacity while idling in line. Their good cop-bad cop approach didn't phase us and we weren't terribly amused by the bad cop's sarcastic question that we woke up this morning and impulsively decided to drive down to the States. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho made a great lunch time break from all of the driving. ... read more

DAY 19 Bothell to Spokane THE FINAL DAY Snoqualmie Pass was open and Geoff said we’re going for it. So off we went. It was miserable on the pass with so much standing water on the roadway and big semi-trucks and slush. Not fun! But Captain Geoff got us safely through and kept driving until it was time to dump. What we found out was that most of the dumpsites where buried with snow and not accessible. So we made a beeline for home. Our house was well cared for by dear friends and we were able to pull right in - with walls of snow on either side of the driveway - CRAZY!!! Our house felt as big as a palace! (Not as clean - we left in kind of a hurry 19 days ago ... read more
