KEITH OLIVER Keith was my cousin. He went up the flume a few years back while on a classified mission for the Department of Defense. It would please his ghost to be included in the blog. Nobody on the planet was fonder of aviation than he was. Keith graduated from Shadle Park High School in Spokane, WA on a balmy Thursday afternoon in early June of 1972. He got married on Friday and drove over to Seattle on a brief but very romantic honeymoon, and returned to Spokane on Sunday. On Tuesday morning he left for the army. He had been accepted into the Warrant Officer Flight Training Program to become a helicopter pilot. At the time the Army had far more pilots than the Air Force. Most of them were intrepid old Vietnam ... read more

STEPTOE Steptoe Butte is located a few miles southeast of Rosalia, Washington. It is such a unique feature that it carries its own geologic definition. A steptoe is a prominence of quartzite protruding through a basalt flow. Only one such place exists on the planet. The butte is not named after that unique geologic feature though. It is named in honor of Edward Jennings Steptoe and is a place he would probably just as soon forget. Edward Steptoe graduated from West Point in the class of 1837 along with a fellow named James Gunnison. Steptoe served two tours in the Second Seminole War, and fought valiantly enough during the War with Mexico to have attained a brevet rank of lieutenant colonel. Gunnison graduated second in the class of 1837 and served in the Topographic ... read more

I've made all my official announcements, pronouncements and advertisements, now it's time to leave. Wheels are up on December first, so the apartment is a mess of things we're frantically trying to get into storage or trade for green pictures of dead presidents. Craigslist adds are flying, phone calls and texts are flying back and forth as Eya and I milk our social network for every dollar our non-portable accessories are worth. Which reminds me, anyone want to buy a queen-sized bed? Birthdays have been fun, trying to shop for some REI version of an electronic luxury or figuring out how to ruggedize the things we want to take. Moving your life into a 65 liter backpack is a powerful exercise in minimalism. What objects define me? What can I double-up to save space? What can ... read more

7th Aug ’12 Whitefish to Spokane, Washington. Another 250 miles to go in the boiling heat and we just drove and drove, eventually we got to the outskirts of the city of Spokane and the traffic on the highway made it seem like we were on a race track! Our hotel wasn’t right in the centre and we managed to negotiate the roads to find it fairly well. As our room wasn’t ready – despite it being 4.30pm we just collapsed in the lobby, drank the free drinks and waited 30 minutes until it was. Howard then decided he wanted to drive into the city to see the waterfront area. So risking life and limb we braved the one way system, dodged the cars and swerved into a car park. The riverfront park was lovely, a ... read more

July 18 Spokane Monday we decided to stay in a Spokane for another day. We tried "Priceline" to see how the bid process works and were quite pleased that we got reservations for the "Red Lion" overlooking the Spokane river for $65 (regular rate of $125). They came through!   We arrived in Spokane around 10 AM and started on our tour of downtown finally ending up at Nordstrom for a little shopping. Do miss this in the desert. Spokane has some nice shopping but no where near Portland. Lunch was at a find of a restaurant named Sante where they made many of their own cold cuts and spreads. It was outstanding. Dinner that night was at Milford's Fish House where we again had an outstanding meal of sautéed fish, clams and shrimp that was ... read more

Friday, late afternoon, we arrived at Staci & Martin's apartment in Spokane, Washington. We lounged around that evening chatting and catching up since we last saw each other on New Year's Day, 4 months ago. Staci & I email, chat/video chat, or text message multiples every week but seeing each other is much more fun. Martin prepared us a Mexican style dinner that was very good and then we decided to go to a local bar to watch the Lakers/Mavericks game. Us ladies were more interested in having a few beers to relax. Saturday morning the 4 of us went to YMCA Central in Spokane as Staci & Martin are members there. Ali Vincent, Biggest Loser Season 5 Winner, recently moved from Arizona to Spokane and was putting on a 30 minute Boot Camp workout. Staci ... read more

Hey guys! I have just recently found out that I have been accepted to Heidi Baker's Harvest School of Missions starting in June! 600 people applied for this school and only 180 were accepted. I applied for this school in Feb and received an e-mail last week saying that I was on the waiting list. Fighting against discouragement and doubt I kept pressing into God knowing that He would get me there if He wanted me there. After many sleepless nights filled with prayer, worship, and seeking God, I received an e-mail that turned my whole world upside down. I am still in shock that I was accepted! I have a little over 3 weeks to apply and receive a visa, book a flight, and come up with the money to get there and back. Please ... read more

Driving through on the interstate, Spokane appears to be a sprawling mess of begrimed grain elevators. Anyone who has briefly visited will snidely say, "Well, it's certainly no Seattle." It’s true that much of Spokane isn’t pretty but there are some nice areas and it’s big enough that after four months I am still discovering hidden gems. Spokane offers all the amenities of big city but retains a nice town-like feel. It’s easy to escape the city – for example, the rural farm where I live is only 15 minutes from downtown. On the hand, Spokane’s size ensures that there are always events and interesting things to do. Aside from the daily Spokesman-Review, there are a few alternative weekly newspapers that keep locals informed with restaurant reviews, upcoming events, and area activities. There are three community ... read more
