One of the things I've enjoyed the most since moving here was going parasailing. My son treated me to this as an early birthday gift, since the parasailing boats don't go out in the fall (my birthday is late October). I'd been telling myself for years that I would go up, but never did. My son saw to it that I went as high as they go. From 1200 feet in the air with a parachute above your head, you can see the boat that's towing you, but you can no longer hear it! At that height, I could clearly see the dividing line between the red tide that had formed, and the more natural blue-green water further out into the ocean. The city of Norfolk is 15 miles away, but was totally visible from that ... read more

I Spent most of the day driving across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey just so I could get my hands on one of those famous Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwiches. Well........... After eating a "world famos GENOS cheesesteak sandwich, I was left with the feeling that they wern't all that after all, until Todd suggested trying another one fron the neighboring compettion across the street "Pat's" Now where talkin!!!! The guy suggested that I have some melted cheese on it and it made all the difference, and for those of you that are keeping count, yes I had two cheese steak sandwhiches!!! What???? Since I had to make up some time I had to get on the interstates, so there wern't too many pictures taken on this day, and the ones that I did take, weren't worth posting. ... read more

We left the house as soon as we could, heading to the Shenandoah National Park to hike in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. As we drove we decided to hike down Doyles Run, but changed our mind at the restaurant-service station that is located at milepost 81. The lady working behind the counter said neither falls currently had any water flowing over them but she liked the hike down to the Jones Run waterfall. She said to her it is a more beautiful hike since you are walking under an overhanging canopy of trees. Also we had read that this hike is not as difficult on the return up the mountain as Doyles Run. It has been a very dry summer and we were not surprised to hear that no water was flowing over the falls. ... read more

OK, what started out to be a easy drive to Fredricksville Virgina, ended up being a ten hour trip, but who cares!!! Driving through the national forests takes up a lot of time, because the speed linits are 20 to 45mph!!! any faster and you'll end up on the evening news!!!Part IIAfter getting some dinner at a local establishment, I headed out for what I thought would be some great night images in Washington DC. I have never been more dissapointed in my life. I have been to many cities and have taken hundreds if not thousands of night shots, but there won't be too many from this city. I intended to go out and take shots of the various monuments and memorials that only Washington DC has to offer, to my surprise, parking was not ... read more

The issue that I've always had when traveling is what do I pack?? For some reason, this particular trip is driving me nuts.... what do I pack?? What's the weather like? What kind of shoes do I bring?? It was 10 PM at night and I still had no clue. So I had to stop thinking and start throwing stuff into a suitcase.... but this brought up another issue... do I go with my standard 22 in suitcase?? Or do I go with the larger 26 in? The 22 in works except I have no room for my hair stuff or for extra stuff to bring home.... The 26 in works as well... plenty of room for clothes, plenty of room for hair stuff... plenty of room for new stuff.... except it's very big... what should ... read more

I woke up in bed with Claudia today which is always a good way to start the day. However it was at 6 AM. Not so great. We said our goodbyes and headed in opposite directions as she went north to Boston and I started my journey south. By 10 AM I'd been in four different states. I finally made it into DC around 1 PM today. I met up with David R., a kid I use to work with back at Brandeis. He graduated in 2005 and has spent the last two years on the the island of Barbuda in the Caribbean with the Peace Corps. We spent the afternoon in his amazing apartment in NW DC and he let me in on all the little details, frustrations, and joys of being a Peace Corps ... read more

Geo: 39.0274, -77.3964I just wanted to post an official close to the odyssey. The flight was long (9 hours) from Munich to Dulles, but relatively comfortable and there was a joyous reunion with Dad and Nanny at the airport. The Customs Guy asked Josh how many Cuban cigars he brought back and he responded, "I don't know." Luckily, the agent didn't hold it against him and we skated on through.I couldn't have been more pleased with how the summer went. Our trip met or exceeded all my hopes and expectations for exploration, new experiences and making friends. Both the country and the people were wonderful. If it hasn't been clear from our blogs, we never felt unsafe and never had any problems with foodborne illness that were any more than what I would expect in a ... read more

After 3 days in DC and busily helping to set up Sierra in her new environs we fled to a people-less area, and are staying in a pretty amazing hotel in Warm Springs over the Blue Ridge Mnts in Virginia. The Warm Springs Motor Hotel - which says nothing about the fact that it is the old Warm Springs Courthouse and we are staying in the converted jailhouse. It is very plush and totally filled with collectibles ranging from confederate soldiers to art deco tables and lamps, African carvings, deep south antiques and monkeys - both real and fake. People with great drawls live here, and I’m tempted to say ya'all as well. Jule has deteriorated into sentences like “Now that we’ve aten lunch, les go” This is the same hotel we stayed in 13 years ... read more
