We visited Jamestown, Va during their 400 year celebration and on to Yorktown where we emersed ourselves in the history eeking from every corner of the town. We have a real sense of what sacrifices were made to create this great country!... read more

So I thought I should post a few pics of our soon to be gone home. Or rather, since the house is fairly normal and not that exciting, some pictures of our vacation last month with my husbands family. I am still desperately trying to talk my husband into traveling all the way to the Pacific coast this trip, so that it will be a true "Coast to Coast" vacation. The end of May was both me and my husbands birthday, his 30th and my 25th. His parents and his younger brother and brother's girlfriend all came out and visited for a week of sun, fun, ocean and monuments. To cap off the weekend and to celebrate the start of a new decade, I treated the family (and a few friends) to a private box ... read more

Yay! We left Cedar Falls this morning and headed to Minneapolis with my dear friend and co-worker, Doris as chauffeur. We checked in for our flight to Washington DC, switched our seat assignments from the exit row (since Owen is not yet 15!), grabbed a sandwich from Caribou Coffee, and got on the plane. Then we sat for about an hour while a faulty jumpseat was repaired, and Air Traffic Control contemplated the bad weather in the DC area. We were kept up-to-date on things, though, which was good. After an uneventful flight, we arrived in DC 40 minutes late, grabbed our checked bag of baby clothes for Conor, and met Tim (our brother-in-law) out front. We spent the evening rocking and holding baby Conor--he was having a rough day! We are all packed up ... read more

For those who don't know me well, I'm addicted to the idea of travel. Not so much traveling itself, but planning and reading about exotic places. I'm even starting classes this fall to get my travel and tourism certification. Do I need it? Will I ever use it? Nope. Except to plan my own travel and maybe learn how to get someone who speaks English on the phone at the port authority in Puerto Rico. My husband's favorite place is Barnes and Noble. Or Books A Million. Or pick any bookstore chain that discounts. And everytime he goes, I am inevitably dragged along, kicking and screaming. But I buy at least 4 books to his every 1. And the last couple of days I've been burying myself in my travel books: Puerto Rico, Florida Keys, Charleston, ... read more

Written by Miss Wendy O After shaking the dust off, having a much needed shower (especially Stuart pooeeee) and finally sorting Argie's aircon we were off. We drove to Ashville to reach the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It traverses the southern Appalachian ridge and extends from North Carolina's Great Smoky Mountains to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. It was great to leave the dull interstates to quieter scenic roads where we could fully appriate the stunning views of the mountains. We camped the first night at a site at the beginning of the parkway. It was called Doughty campsite but Stuart and I appropriately renamed it Blair Witch Campsite after our stay. We were the ONLY people there which initially we thought was kinda kool but as dusk fell the surrounding trees and silence ... read more

In my first post I mentioned that preparation was part of the journey. It’s also a great way to not feel so overwhelmed and anxious about such huge life changes. Budgets, timelines, and maps don’t sound exciting compared to the vastness of the Grand Canyon or the majesty of Mount Rushmore, but in the very stressful time between deciding to pick up and leave everything familiar and actually setting off, it can ease the nervousness. Okay, in reality budgets, maps, and timelines aren’t EVER exciting, but they are a little bit like a security blanket. In fact, Excel spreadsheets are a bit like Prozac for me. When I am super stressed out or questioning the wisdom of this move, I turn to Excel. (Sorry hubby, but Excel never argues or talks back ) I have ... read more

Saturday we went down to Richmond to visit Axel's friend Jon and it was a blast. I never really knew how much Richmond has to offer. We picked him up at his house and went downtown to a cute french bistro with nice outdoor seating. It was HOT, but fun no less. This is where we ate: http://www.visit.richmond.com/visitors/listingdetail.aspx?address_id=12069&Guide_ID=42 I highly reccommend Can Can! Next we went to an amazing park. It is part of an estate of some sort that was donated to the city. There is a zoo and waterfalls and all sorts of cool stuf. It's called Maymont and again - its a must do. It was just absolutely beautiful! http://www.maymont.org/ Sunday, we were able to do my favorit summer activity of all - after the beach. We went to Kings Dominion. It was ... read more

I thought that I would add my first entry on the actual first day of travel, but I realized that the preparation is part of the journey as well. We have been preparing for several months now, but considering the enormity of our task it isn't nearly enough time. We have saved as much money as possible, and planned things as we thought appropriate, but in reality this journey will be about enjoying ourselves and the road less traveled so we have tried to remain fluid and relaxed as much as possible. Who knew trying to remain relaxed would be so much work! Today is my first day of being unemployed, and I was never so busy! We hired a couple of marines to come and take care of our jungle of a yard, the buyer ... read more
