We've been asked, "When did you start RVing?" Well, as the picture shows, in 1971. We had a VW camper we took all over the east coast of the US, and up into Canada. We didn't know we were RVers at the time; we were young and adventurous. In 2004 we returned from Japan where John had been working for the US Marine Corps, and since we owned no home, no car, no boat, we decided the first thing we would do was buy an RV. We found a great saleslady at LazyDays in Florida, and via Internet and numerous phone calls, we finally put a deposit on a small RV and when we flew back, bought it. Our dream is to one day (soon!) retire, sell this RV and purchase a bigger one, the go ... read more

Lauren, my niece, says I'm lucky to ride my bike in March in shorts and repot plants in Virginia; she's in Pittsburgh. I must agree though, I am lucky - Friday in Virginia Beach is 82 degrees. However, Saturday in Smithfield is 50 degrees. Will pneumonia sneak up on me by swimming and then cycling in wet clothes? I'm uncertain, but this is the difference between a 3 minute swim/bike transition time vs. a 1.5 minute transition time. With a quick transition time, I could gain an advantage and rank higher by saving that minute. Especially, since I really haven't been training. ... read more

Hi friends. I am just testing out the travel blog pages and methods here, since we will be headed out in late May, right after Max graduates from middle school, on the Great American Road Trip. We are lucky in that we have a wonderful family who will house sit and dog sit for us. We hope they will check in here from time to time and tell us how Muffin is doing, and that all of you will use the site to check in on our progress (especially those we'll be visiting), see our photos, hear our stories. We are starting the preparations: checking that camping equipment is in good repair, buying luggage on sale, car-top carrier for the mini-van, Coleman lanterns. I have made one batch of beef jerky (turned out good!) and am ... read more

Well, Saturday, our plane was about an hour late leaving Heathrow but we landed only about 35 minutes "late". Immigration, luggage collection, customs, etc. went smoothly. Boy, were we glad we'd reserved a room at the Dulles Marriott (thanks, Doug!!). We were exhausted--about 36 hours later than when we'd left the hotel in Kolkata, with only a couple hours sleep. Did have two good flights, met some more interesting folks, had bangers & mash on the second flight, watched movies and TV but were pretty tired of sitting. Got up Monday and headed on home--the Valley sure does look good! Thank you all for reading along with us--we had a great trip and truly enjoyed sharing with you. I've added pictures to yesterday's entry so you might look at it again.... read more

Okay, finally getting around to updating my blog again. This time I'm going to write a little about the PRESENT! Lynchburg was on my list of places to stop because I wanted to visit with good friends of mine the Curriers. I first met Budge and his family while teaching at the Academy. Budge was in the Marine Corps and just had a great sense of balancing work with family with fitness. And when it came to teaching he had all the rigor of a Marine while still managing to make his class so much fun that he fooled even the most reluctant jocks into learning something about Electrical Engineering. What a trick? Obviously, I hung around a lot trying to learn how to teach and live better :) Then after meeting Shelah and the kids ... read more

A return to the States is like a regression in time where buildings, roads, and store names have changed while people and old habits haven't. There's a new building on the corner, the highway is a little wider, a little longer before the familiar construction, and that one restaurant where you used to go has closed shop while three chain restaurants have opened in its stead. People have matured slightly with the passing of another year, but most of them look the same, act the same, and surely think the same as they did when you knew them in what seems like a previous life whose tracks you've picked back up. The comparisons are inevitable in the first couple weeks due to the shift in perspective you've gained from living in, experiencing and learning about different ... read more

I capitalized PAST in the title because I wanted to make two entries about Lynchburg, one talking about the past, the 2nd about the present. My second day in Lynchburg, Aunt Mary Katherine happened to call and encouraged me to drive past some of the landmarks in our family history. I had no idea Lynchburg was as large as it actually is and didn't know Randolf-Macon University was there. It is a beautiful campus, quite close to where Grandpa and Grandma lived. As you can tell from the pictures, I also went downtown. I liked that the city was so vertical. They even had a public elevator. It reminded me a little of Lisbon, Portugal in that way. For breakfast that day, I went to Famous Anthony's (a little outside of the city) where I ... read more

I was in Richmond for the last time this past weekend and said goodbye to most of my friends. It was bittersweet, but we had a lot of fun. Friday night, everyone went out to dinner to one of my favorite places (Cous Cous!- yum!) and enjoyed a good meditteranean meal. I learned how to make indian food, banana pancakes, played some Guitar Hero, got lots of hugs, and relaxed....AND I made it through the weekend tear free! That was the best part...I'm probably saving those tears for when I have to say goodbye to my parents at the airport on Sunday, but that's one thing about this trip I'm trying not to think about. That and the 8 hour layover in LA and the 14 hour flight to follow. Here's some pictures of my friends ... read more

Well, I packed my bag last weekend, have taken my last typhoid vaccine dose, checked baggage limits on the airline, did what pre-boarding tasks I could do, spent the weekend working on presentations to take with me (counting on computer access!), and copied itinerary info to leave behind. Still need to try uploading a picture directly from my camera to accompany an item; will try and do that tonight! Boring, but practice.... read more
