Season II on Appleseeds has begun with my return to Deltaville, Virginia in mid September. Over the summer we had decided that our return trip to the Caribbean would not be a reverse of the Intracoastal Waterway but instead would be a ten day sail offshore from Norfolk, Virginia to the British Virgin Islands, the Caribbean 1500. The offshore decision made the list of things to do pale the list of last year. It included installing a Single Side Band radio, a chart plotter, davits, solar panels, a dodger. It also included purchasing a new dinghy, shipping an outboard from Vancouver, buying numerous charts, a MOM (Man overboard module), flares, a freezer, spares for the engine, a new anchor. It included considering, drafting and practicing emergency procedures for man overboard, fires, floods, dismasting; developing and procuring ... read more

Hello World! This being my first blog entry, I haven't much to say, except that I am leaving for Christmas break in Sweden with my family in only one week and 2 days! Before this time, I have to turn in all the right forms for my practicum, for graduation, and for other school-related things, finish one 20-page paper, finish one group paper, finish one report for work, go to one long meeting over the next day and a half, write meeting minutes for that meeting, and finish a report for my department at school. Not to mention the fact that I need to buy shoes, an adaptor, pants, Christmas presents, a digital recorder (maybe), and probably lots more. And I need to try out my malaria meds to make sure they don't make me crazy. ... read more

Reached Richmond, Virginia yesterday after a 6 hour drive, which is the first time since South America I've had such a day of travelling. Still, it went by fairly quickly and we actually arrived slightly ahead of time. The hotel I'm staying in is in the centre of town (at last!) and is a restored 19th century building, so I felt pretty bad when within about 10 minutes of being there I managed to break one of the (probably antique) chairs in my room. There's not really a great deal to do in Richmond, and it seems to be quite an old city so a bit of a culture shock after coming from the high rises of Charlotte. But there was enough to occupy me for one day. First of all I walked to the Edgar ... read more

Obfuscator writes: It was cold again in Virginia. Strangely, we tend to think of Virginia as southern, and culturally, it is. Environmentally, however, is a different story. It's not warm in Virginia. Now, to be fair, it's not cold like Wisconsin either, but it is somewhere in between. It's plenty cold here. It's certainly below freezing in the night, as evidenced by the frost that formed on my bag and ground pad overnight. Holiday State Park may have had something to see, but the campground certainly was nothing special to look at. We had Appomattox on our minds though, and so we set off fairly early to see it. It was definitely easier to navigate the hilly backcountry of Virginia by day than it had been the previous night in the dark. We realized that the ... read more

Obfuscator writes: It was cold in the night. It was funny, since when we had arrived at Assateague National Seashore, it had been warmer than any of the previous nights. I even thought it was warmer than those nights when I went to bed. Nevertheless, during the night, it got cold! So naturally, I pulled my bag and bivvy cover over my head. What this really meant was that I was slightly less cold, but slept pretty late. By the time I was up, Onaxthiel had been up for a while, taking pictures, and exploring the area. At any rate, after I got up, we went down to the beach, and took a good look at the shore where we had been camped. The ocean was pretty there, much like it had been in Ocean City. ... read more

Obfuscator writes: I'll keep this pretty short, since there's not a lot to say that will interest everyone. After we left Mount Yonah on Day 88, we drove until about Greenville, SC, where we found a decent motel and crashed for the night. The following day, we drove from there to Norfolk, VA, where we were due to meet our brother J and his family for Thanksgiving. The drive would have been a lot better if we hadn't hit fairly awful traffic around Charlotte, NC. Being the day before Thanksgiving, we probably should have anticipated bad traffic, but we didn't think about that. Near the SC/NC border, we stopped for a while at King's Mountain Military National Park. Onaxthiel had passed this spot many times in his southern dwelling years, but had never had the chance ... read more

So here I am, I'm sitting in the living room of my parents' house (yea, it sounds very funny to call it that when it was my home for so many years until I left for college). I sit here and I'm thinking about the last 10 years of my life. Starting somewhere around the age of 13 is when my life really started to take significant direction. I was starting to head into high school (my middle school was attached to my high school). I began to make decisions and find interests that would begin to shape who I would become as a young adult. I found my way to Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia in 2003 where I struggled for a few years to find a major that would suit me ... read more

Obfuscator writes: After checking the weather report for the day and night, we left our motel in Fredericksburg. The forecast was somewhat disappointing, predicting rain all day, and 10-20% chance of rain in the night as well. While we were in civilization, and not a huge city, we figured we'd see about refitting some gear. A few nights ago when cooking, one of our pots broke. These pots have detachable handles, and little metal bits that allow these handles to hook in. That was what had broken on a pot we mostly use for large quantities of water heating. The bit had originally been spot welded on, but we figured it was reparable. Unfortunately we didn't have a drill or the parts we would need to repair it. Luckily we were able to find a Lowe's ... read more
