OIL DOWN The national dish of Grenada It was a great afternoon with about 20 cruisers and 20 locals. The recipe kind of says it all! Take a swig of rum, preferably Rivers. Grate fresh coconut and saffron. (about an hour with 8 people) Peel breadfruit, ripe green bananas & pumpkin. (get locals to help with this). Go to nearest callaloo bush & pick 1/2 dozen leaves. Take another swig Rivers rum. 8-9 garlic cloves, 1 very, very small onion. Green papaya, 2 carrots. string beans, ketchup, 1 Tbsp. "Complete Seasoning" Slaughter pig, cut off snout & tail, discard rest. (Definitely need a hefty gulp of rum at this point) Marinate in "Green Sauce" along with some old chicken. Get yourself a massive black cauldron & start up fire, making sure that lady from up the ... read more

Peacefully bobbing at anchor at Hog Island, Grenada, we have just finished dinner of bbq’d pork chops and are now enjoying the serenity. Tree frogs are a constant hum. The temperature is still in the low 80’s; (I have given up trying to translate to Celsius) but the heat is over for the day. It sure is nice to have Ace here; she arrived two days ago after having given me ten days to launch the boat and put it in some semblance of order. Today was the first day in two weeks where the rhythm of the Caribbean seems to have returned... slow and easy. The past two weeks have been a bit of a blur. My brother Bill and I met in Toronto, flew down together and were to provide each other with some ... read more

The pace in Hampton was a tad more frantic than Deltaville. The boats for the 1500 were arriving every day and each no doubt had many things to accomplish. We arranged for our inspection for Monday morning as we wanted as much time as possible to rectify any shortcomings. Rick showed up bright and early the next morning and we went through the list point by point. Well it seems the frantic activity over the past 7 weeks paid off because except for a few minor points, we were ready to go. One thing he didn’t check though and I guess he has to accept some things as presented, was that our newly installed SSB radio was not set up to send on the required frequency for the rally. To make it work, the radio still ... read more

Season II on Appleseeds has begun with my return to Deltaville, Virginia in mid September. Over the summer we had decided that our return trip to the Caribbean would not be a reverse of the Intracoastal Waterway but instead would be a ten day sail offshore from Norfolk, Virginia to the British Virgin Islands, the Caribbean 1500. The offshore decision made the list of things to do pale the list of last year. It included installing a Single Side Band radio, a chart plotter, davits, solar panels, a dodger. It also included purchasing a new dinghy, shipping an outboard from Vancouver, buying numerous charts, a MOM (Man overboard module), flares, a freezer, spares for the engine, a new anchor. It included considering, drafting and practicing emergency procedures for man overboard, fires, floods, dismasting; developing and procuring ... read more

Latitude 30 deg 20 min N, 70 deg 20 min W; 400 miles SE of Cape Hatteras, 200 miles SW of Bermuda and 700 miles from BVI; wind NE 30 to 35 kts; seas 12 ft; 3 reefs in the main; 70 % of our small jib; surfing 9 to 10 kts. We have come through several squalls tonight and there is lightning all around; its 5 AM; black; the wind is fairly steady, the seas are building. At our last radio check the previous night at 7, several boats had reported waterspouts and all had reported squalls and lightning. However the boat feels good, fast and stable, like it is on rails. George, our autohelm, has us going straight as an arrow, click, click, two inches of helm to port, click, click, two inches of ... read more
