Pops followed through and woke us up at 6 am. He went down to the RV to make coffee and the the girls and I got dressed, washed faces and brushed teeth. We looked at our hair after going to bed with it wet and decided we could enter an 'Funny/Ugly hairdo contest today and I would rank #1, Lola #2, Bella #3. We went downstairs to the free breakfast and Pops joined us bringing in our coffee he made in the RV. We got on the road. It's cloudy- our first day without the blue, cloudless skies. I dozed off and woke up to pounding rain. It finally stopped when we got through Memphis. I pointed out the Mississippi River to the girls. I really feel like my mom doing this but at least they ... read more

I am so happy to be going back to the part of the world that I like best- South America. This time I am not going by myself or with Val or with an organized tour group. I am going with a group of eight from Memphis and 12 from Kalamazoo, MI as part of the Friendship Force ( www.friendshipforce.org). Many years ago, 1986 to be precise, my husband (now ex) and I went as part of a small Friendship Force (FF) group to Hamburg, Germany for two weeks. We had a wonderful visit with Horst and Waltraud Jungclaus. The friendship continues and in 2007, Val and I stayed with them for a week. A few years after I moved to Memphis I found out there was a FF group here. I joined and have hosted ... read more

September 27, 2014 (Saturday) (Double click on a picture to enlarge it) It feels so good to be back on the road!!! I am headed to the Smoky Mountains so today was mostly a travel day. I am in Jackson TN tonight and will spend tomorrow in Nashville. I will head to Gatlinburg on Monday. It was so relaxing driving from Dallas to Jackson. The sky was so gorgeous. It was like the dividing line between cloudy and sunny was right in the middle of my car. The right side was cloudy with sun beams shining thru and the left side was sunny with fluffy white clouds. I had the music going and was jamming the whole day. Since I was trying to make time I didn’t stop too much. I did stop in Memphis at ... read more

From Alabama, we headed north into Tennessee. The first stop was in Memphis. I had read that the real estate prices were as depressed in Memphis as anywhere in the country. I looked at 20-30 properties there and the well priced properties were mostly in the most dangerous neighborhoods. I was thinking that the risk of being in dangerous areas might be worth the incredible upside inflation potential, but I wanted to know what Nashville and Knoxville felt like before making the decision. I had heard both were safer. On the way out of town we stopped by the Elvis Mansion.... read more

Geo: 35.1496, -90.0489Navigating the streets of New Orleans was not as difficult as we had feared and we were soon on our way out of the city and onto the freeway. After around an hour and a half, our first port of call had to be breakfast - we were ravenous and knew we would need plenty of provisions for the long drive ahead. We pulled into a service station for breakfast and stocked up on enough junk food to last us for a couple of hours. After another couple of hours driving, we were in Mississippi. This was the state that we were going to pass through and not actually stop in. So, to rectify matters, we decided to stop and grab lunch en route. We didn't have time to visit any of the towns on ... read more

Driving to Memphis was a short 3 hour drive but involved me driving through the heaviest rain I've ever had to do. At one point it was so heavy it felt like I was driving through a waterfall, forcing me to pull over and wait out the worst. The same storm caused 2 trees to fall across the road at my B&B, knocking out the power and so the first night in Memphis was by torch light. This I didn't really mind, I sat on the porch with Jamie, the B&B host chatting away and playing with her adorable 3 month old pup called Chew Chew. Chew Chew kept knocking at my door to be let in and everything was a big play ground! Could have totally fitted her into my bag to be my travel ... read more

In Memphis, I've been staying at a lovely Hostel named after Pilgrims. The people are so friendly and there have been at least two large groups of university students on alternative spring breaks. The company has been wonderful as young people are so giving, encouraging, and easy to laugh with. On my first night, I went out to the "well-known" Beale Street, where bars and blues line the streets. People smoke in joints and listen to soulful music. My pictures are from yesterday, which started off with a drive over to the Stax museum. Here is where many blues artists got their start. From the Bar-Kays, to Otis Redding, and even that one guy who played shaft and had a pimp-daddy cadillac all started here. The recording studio aspect was pretty cool. They should the mixing ... read more

We started out early on Tuesday morning anxious to get to Memphis to check out Graceland, Beale St. and Mud Island. We had visited these sites many years ago had great memories of them all and were excited to see how the current versions compared to those in our minds eye. The RV Park was luckily right across the street from Graceland so we hurriedly settled into our campsite and walked across the street to purchase our tickets. The last time we visited ( maybe 20 years ago?) the ticket line and waiting area was packed with tourists and we had to wait probably an hour to board the shuttle for our tour. Happily, this time we waited only about 5 minutes before we were loaded on to the shuttle ( after having our picture made ... read more

The one about doing nothing for 2 days. I slept like a rock on Tuesday night. The temperature went down to 68. With the windows open, I am literally sleeping ‘outside.’ I needed a blanket! It was heaven. I was up early and walked Winston around the whole campground, which, actually, is very hilly, so it gave me a great walk. It must have been catch up morning on the telephone, because I had several lengthy conversations with family members, and it was good to hear from them. It was easy to break camp and I was on the road by 10. Something on my bucket list has always been to drive the Natchez Trace Parkway. From their National Park Service Website: The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile drive through exceptional scenery and ... read more
