Yes you guessed it today we headed off to America’s biggest tourist attraction Graceland. We both thought it would be a lot tackier to be honest, I guess we’ll leave the real glitz for Las Vegas. The actual house is a lot smaller than you would imagine, but he did add a lot of outbuildings to the back, and it was the largest house in Memphis when he bought it. The décor remains the same as it was in the 70s when he died which does explain a lot for the taste. Today it had Christmas decorations up, fit for the [View Full Entry]

Here's Ian doing his best Elvis impersonation at Graceland.
As we mentioned in one of the previous entries, we had Ian and Sandra visiting for just on four weeks, and one of the places they really wanted to visit that we hadn't been yet was Memphis in Tennessee. Memphis is quite a well known town for a number of reasons, but the most famous of them all is being home to Elvis Presley's home - Graceland. Fiona took a few days off work and we flew in Memphis on a Friday afternoon. The weather in Jacksonville has been quite nice of late, so we were in for a rude shock [View Full Entry]

Gotta start somewhere It's not that we didn't want to move to Krakow, it just happened fast! Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely. And that is exactly what happened with us. Got the house sold, made arrangements with the moving company, we are moving back "home" after being in Memphis, fulfilling Keith's long range plan for retirement! Then comes the offer to work in Krakow, Poland! Serendipity. There we were, looking at moving back to our home town, in our little house by the oc [View Full Entry]

What's the wuss about?
Greetings from Memphis, Tennessee! This is not a typical Memphis sightseeing, as we are in town for our friend Courtney’s wedding with Lior. We are congregated in the Baron Hirsch Synagogue for the ceremony and reception, and this is my first time in such environment. There are many friends coming from all over the states, and even Lior’s Israeli family came from the Middle East for the event. Other than the wedding, we manage to check out the Graceland where Elvis Mansion is located and the Beale Street - a downtown, pedestrian friendly section of Memphis that is full with [View Full Entry]

Mazel Tov! -- ‘Good fortune’ - a phrase that is often said frequently and loudly at Jewish celebrations. The excited exclamation brings me back from my brief daydream, after a couple of minutes listening to a foreign speech that I can not understand. I look around and find myself sitting among a hundred enthusiast worshippers inside Baron Hirsch Synagogue - an intricate American Orthodox Judaism synagogue in the City of Blues - Memphis, Tennessee. The congregation hall is inviting, with stain glass windows hanging high, depicting several bearded men and various [View Full Entry]

Some murals in Beale Street

We got to Graceland at 3:40….we got tickets and audio equipment for the tour then took a shuttle to the house. We were dropped off at the front steps of Graceland. The house was named after the original owner’s Aunt Grace….Elvis liked the name so much that he kept it. He bought the house when he was 21 for $100,000.00. We were very fortunate that we arrived so late in the day because it was virtually empty. This enabled us to move at our own pace. After a brief intro from an employee we entered the house. Once inside, our first [View Full Entry]

Bart!!
Beale St at night

We always planned to visit Graceland, but we hadn’t bargained on turning up in the middle of Elvis Week! Luckily we missed the biggest crowds, here to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Elvis’ death on 16th August. The tour takes you through the Graceland mansion, which is as it would have been at the time of Elvis’ death in 1977, to the Memorial Garden where Elvis and his parents and grandmother are buried. It also includes entry to the Elvis museum (which has an exhibit of many of Elvlis' jump suits), his 2 private planes and automobile collection (including that famous [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Memphis and again the heat was a real killer, we had to find a hotel to stay in as there are no Hostels. We ended up staying in the Sleep Inn and it was way over priced 139 dollars a night fs........ We ended up out that night on Beale street and it was completly buzzin!! Every other bar there seemed to be an Elvis on or something to do with him, the street corners and alleys were packed with bands playing blues, every1 was dancin in the street to music. We ended up in Coytee Ugly for a [View Full Entry]

Memphis: Elvis lives! Mt. Vernon, The Biltmore and now Graceland! Actually it's an interesting 1970's time capsule. The house, while compared to today's McMansions is actually very modest it provides insight into Elvis's values and the fact that he bought it when only he was 22 and always called it home. As did his mom and dad and grandmother, Minny Mae who outlived them all. You cannot come to Memphis and not tour Graceland. We tour Memphis on the downtown trolley. A local resident gives a thorough commentary of the city with a personal perspective. Downtown Memphis and Beale Street [View Full Entry]
