For those of you who don't know this, Newport, Rhode Island is the sailing capital of the United States...and for good reason! On any given day, but especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Narragansett Bay is filled with sailboats of all sizes. It is the birthplace of the legendary American J-class boats and one of the few places in the world that these mighty America's Cup sloops from the 1930s can still be sighted. With their enormous sail area, they are easy to spot gliding majestically across the bay. Labor Day weekend, we went sailing in the Bay with our friends Leo and Sparky (Frank). The marina at the naval base here in Newport, rents Rhodes 19s and Shields 30s. The graceful Shields are always my prefered choice, although it must be pointed out that ... read more

I am finally home and back in Rhode Island!! The trip was amazing, but I am exhausted. It's going to take a few days to feel "back to normal". Just wanted to take this time for thanks: - to the McNamee's for their hospitality - to Mark for the ride on the scooter and to the airport - to Brian for the hospitality - to the Georges' for their hospitality - to the midget for making me smile - to Jimmy Buffett for opening up a Margaritaville in Vegas! - to Joe for showing me the Grand Canyon - to Mullet, who never gave up at the buffet - to the dude who let me use his surf board once while I was in the Pacific Ocean - to the girl who thought I was "cool" ... read more

rhode islandChristoph HallI've been trying once again to keep up with blogging but there isn't a lot of time to do so. I usually write them in Notepad and then cut and paste them when I can get internet. Even then it can be difficult as everyone needs to check their e-mail etc.. Driving to Providence from NYC was pretty painless and were still driving on the vegoil that we picked up in that small town on the New York/Pennsylvania border. The bumpy NYC roads cracked the front windshield a little more and the already sketchy passenger side mirror had become an obstacle for NYC bicyclists that couldn't avoid it. I seemed about every 20 minutes or so a guy on a bike would ram his shoulder into the mirror while we were parked. The mirror ... read more

About Time in New England We made it to the Hudson River, last Friday. 31 locks means a lot of slimmy ropes to hold! The Erie Canal was a good way to get started, as you really don’t have to worry about weather, or tides. Taking the canal through the mountains provided some very spectacular scenery, especially “The Flight”, the last few locks before the Hudson River. The first night on the Hudson we stayed at Castleton on the Hudson, bringing memorys back from our last trip. Castleton is a boat club, where many boats put their masts up. In Castleton, you use their facilities, and put your own mast up. Boats leave their mast supports here, for their return trip. We stayed on a mooring ball in Castleton for only $5.00. Our mast was ... read more
