Our condo was so nice and huge! We made our own breakfast at our leisure! The view from the deck was gorgeous. Ed got up real early hoping to take a picture of the sunrise over the water, but learned we were going to get to see the sunset….the sunrise was on the other side of our building!!! Following breakfast we’d took off to go tour The Breakers, one of the beautiful mansions you could visit here in Newport. In the mid 1800’s wealthy southern planters seeking to beat the heat began to build their summer “cottages” along Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Several years later wealthy northerners began building larger mansions nearby. By the turn of the century many of the nations wealthiest families were spending their summers in Newport. They included the Vanderbilts, who built ... read more

Alarm was set for 4.20am to wake me up to watch the NRL Grand Final but I don’t know why as when I have something special occurring I seem to wake up by instinct like the body has it’s own alarm clock. Not sure if that is normal or something that makes me special (hopefully the latter !). Some of the places we have stayed at during this trip have what is called Direct TV with > 100 channels and I was lucky enough here in Newport to have Fox Sports 2 coverage of the NRL Grand Final and I got a text message from Luke when I woke up saying he was off to see the big game live in Sydney to watch the mighty Penrith Panthers against local rivals from Sydney’s west the Parramatta ... read more

Today we were headed for Newport, Rhode Island and we headed off east along Highway 20 connecting with Highway 146 down to the State Capital of Providence, and down Interstate i195 to Newport. We went via some backroads through small towns and started to see some nice foliage colours and the overall travel time was around 2.5 hours today. I tried hard to find a diner on our way but had no luck so we kept on driving and driving and we eventually got so far we decided to keep on going all the way. As we entered Rhode Island it ticked off our 47th state visited and state # 7 on this trip (only 3 more to go !) The weather was mostly fine but still quite cold around 14 degrees but eventually turned to ... read more

Dear All After a really wonderful three days on Cape Cod, whilst I felt ready to leave, I was also a little sad to be leaving and I missed it after I left - I'm not quite sure why, but perhaps it was because if its tranquil nature, and different pace to the rest of the places I visited on my journey. Nevertheless, a Peter Pan bus was ready and waiting to pick me up at the Hyannis Transportation Centre, and take me off westwards on my next adventure for this trip - two nights in the tiny and compact state of Rhode Island, America's smallest state, and nicknamed the "Funsize State" - cute! The bus travelled through some interesting looking places, namely New Bedford and Fall River, two sizeable settlements on the south coast of ... read more

Alarm went off at 6, you know that we do not really relax on vacation, we are pretty much up and going everyday around 6. The bed was comfortable, a bit soft and the memory foam made it a bit warm, but the ocean breeze did come in the room all night since we left the windows all slightly cracked. Tarragon slept well, until 4, then it was time to prowl. I think he was talking to the house cat under the door of our room. Today, is our only full day on the island, so as Jerry finishes getting ready, I am getting a bit of a head start on today’s blog. Originally, when the plan was to be here for 5 days, we were going to rent bikes, but with only one day, we ... read more

As my 36th tax season has now ended we decided to take a second try at some time on Block Island. The trip was originally scheduled for the week after the first half of tax season was over in April, however, that was thwarted by client demands and a different and shorter trip to Portland, Maine was taken in stead. Fortunately, the Blue Dory Inn, was kind enough to just transfer our deposit on the room to be used for another trip. This has sort of been the theme of travel during covid, United Airlines gave us a large travel credit when we had to cancel our second redo of our future Ireland/Scotland trip (which is now on for May 2022). So, 6 months later, here we are on Block Island ... read more

I generally do not post a travel blog when we are at home, however, this is the exception that makes the rule. Providence has a long art history and one of the unique events that is held every year is called Waterfire. Because of Covid they were unable to have the annual lighting last year. This year they were able to bring it back. Waterfire is best described as a moving art exhibit. The main lighting happens in the water plaza where there is a small stadium built into the landscape. From there it is a series of cauldrons filled with cedar and lit on fire. This is all done along a stretch of the river that runs through Providence. Music is also piped along the way. We watched the main lighting then walked along the ... read more

Not much to say about Sunday, just a day of getting to know the area in a Zipcar. We used the day to get a head start on daily living. Where is the Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Farmer's Market, the wine store, and so on. It was a beautiful day, low 80's no humidity until it was time for dinner. We had a quick lunch in the car, sandwiches from Eastside Market, an upscale market between a Safeway and Whole Foods. That was pretty much the day. Dinner was at Hemenway'S, possibly the best seafood in the city. It was a very quick walk from the hotel and sits on the edge of a park on the river. The decisions were difficult, there were several things that just looked really good, especially in the starters. I ... read more

This will again be a short entry, not much to blog about when your looking at apartments most of the day. It will be so short, I am actually typing this directly into the blog. My normal pattern is to type the entry in Word, so I can spell check and get my formatting the way I want it. This is the first time since I started blogging in Thailand that I have done it in this free hand way. The day began the same as yesterday, breakfast at the hotel, (eggs didn't need salt and the potatoes were not overly salty). From there it was off to the first of our two apartments for the day. All I really need to say, is that we have found the place we want to live. A great ... read more
