Thanks to Luisa, we finally broke away from our regular Saturday routine of going to the mall - going to church - going to the grocery store - then going home. She took us to Ann Arbor (Washtenaw County) which is an hour away from Detroit (Wayne County). Unknown to us, we were about to see the other side of Michigan. Laid back Town Going to Ann Arbor, we took the 696 Freeway and saw more barnyards as we get nearer and nearer. Not that we see cattle by the roadside, we saw acres of corn fields and wheat. Spring is yet to come next week so the scenery was all brown and bare. I bet this place is pretty during spring and summer. In Dexter, there were lots of trees by the roadside. There are ... read more

I have one week left in Michigan before I leave for Sri Lanka on August 2nd. I would be lying if I said I weren't nervous. They say the trip takes two days from start to finish. Two days. At least I will have a few days with the other kids on the program before meeting my host family... I would hate to look like a zombie when meeting my mother, father, and sister for the first time. Not much else to say right now. Guess we'll start this puppy up when I arrive in Kandy.... read more

hey friends - it's been nearly a month and a half that we've been back in the good ole "estamos unidos" (a little pun I shared with a nuez vendor in Oaxaca). While being back has it's pluses and minuses, we've really enjoyed re-connecting with friends and family and preparing for our next adventure. If you haven't already heard, Michelle and I are spending our summer and fall on a bicycle tour of Michigan CSA farms, volunteering a few days at as many as 35 farms as we make our way north across our beautiful state. I'd like to invite all of you to follow along on our bicycle tour at: www.glbconference.org/csatour2006/ We do hope to make regular blog postings about our journey and about the CSA farms and farmers we meet along the way, but ... read more

We both graduated this past weekend! Kate got her MSW (Masters of Social Work) and I got my MBA (Masters of Business Administration). Steny, our dog, also had his pet graduation (yes, it was a joke ceremony). So, now we're all set to move. The movers came yesterday to pack everything up and are loading everything on the truck today. It is soo much easier to be moved than to move yourself (or even just pack yourself). Today also marks one week until our trip. Can't wait!... read more

So that mission that I spoke of in Cincinatti was quite disenchanting. We went to about 8 bars and finally settled at a Hamburger Mary's. We had a few drinks and met some people from New York. Fabulous. The eight bar journey was hilarious. We would walk in, walk it through once (sometimes there wasn't much to walk through), and then leave. Six out of seven times we were stared at the ENTIRE time we were there. Hamburger Mary's was quaint and low key. Whatevs. So the shows. I can't really think right now and I don't want to go to the car to get the list of shows to spark my memory. I do remember a touching moment with a little boy who was enthralled by me and hugged me for so long. That stuff ... read more

Is anybody else out there as obsessed with the new jingle for from the folks over at JELL-O Incorporated?? Oh you know, "jiggle it 'n' wiggle it", with the little boy doing a jazz step with the cow? Wow, they've got a winner on their hands. If I'm lucky enough to catch the commercial in the morning before work it really puts stride in my step. I hear Grammy....:) So Sarah's 24th birthday was two Wednesdays ago, and we celebrated with a little kereoke in St. Louis. Now usually, I'm pretty confident in the tunes I tackle, but lemme tellya. Against my better judgement, Sarah requested I sing her a Jason Mraz diddy. THE VERY WALLS OF THE INSTITUTION OF KEREOKE CAME CRUMBLING DOWN BEFORE ME. I left with my tail between my legs, but you ... read more

Here we go again. Now, only because I just left it, I will start my blog with this thought. Humans are a weird bunch. I realized just another way that we trick ourselves. I go into a jacuzzi to relax, however...that shit takes a lot of work. The jets are blowing, you keep floating around, and you really can't sit still. You have to keep yourself above water, soon you start sweating, and you're already hot....what gives. So 15 minutes later, after a "so-called relaxing time at the spa," you have to get out. Just a little thought to ponder. Now, onto my travels. Its been a long time in Michigan. And guess what? It's COLD! Right now it's about 20 degrees. Even though my journal says Ann Arbor, I'm writing to you from Acme, Michigan. ... read more
