So, after a 14 hour flight from Sydney to LA, an 8 hour lay over in LAX, and a 4 hour flight to Detroit, I found myself back at home at 2 am not quite sure which time zone my head, body, or heart were in. (Can we get any more cheesy than that ?!?) The rest of my Sydney trip was incredible. Most notably, I climbed to the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and was able to view the Northern and Southern ends of the Sydney Harbor from standing atop of the highest peak of the bridge. Words really can't describe the experience. The rest of my days were mainly spent touring the city and learning Irish drinking songs. Australia is the first place I have traveled abroad where I felt like I was ... read more

Well, the backpack is packed to the absolute brim, and my room is emptied out for the subletter that's moving in. I can't believe I am actually leaving for this trip that I started planning a year ago. I will arrive in LA around 5:45pm (LA time) and my flight to Nadi, Fiji doesn't take off until 10:30pm. Sigh. I downloaded some movies onto my IPod and have a lot of books, so I will hopefully be able to entertain myself. I arrive in Nadi early in the morning on Friday, January 30th. I actually lose an entire day in travel, which is semi-weird. I gain a day when I come back (also weird!) as well, so I guess it balances out in the end. ;-) I will be staying for a night in Nadi before ... read more

greetings from a very snowy michigan! since i arrived in chicago a week ago, it has barely stopped snowing, which makes for beautiful scenery, dangerous roads and wet socks. it's been really freezing, today is a chilly -12 degrees. i was under the impression that if it was below zero it was too cold to snow, but that theory has definitely been proven wrong! as i sit here, i can see a squirrel (oh, nope, apparently it's a chipmunk!) jumping around in the snowy branches of a tree outside. very cute! since the last time i wrote, lynne and i did a day trip to yosemite national park from san francisco. we left at 6am and it took 4 hours to get there. i thought it didn't snow in california but again i was wrong, and ... read more

Home, Again We arrived safely at home, very early on Wednesday morning. We have tons of laundry (sandy!), are still in some time zone between here and Cairo, almost 2000 pictures, and many wonderful memories. Thanks for following our blog and look for pictures soon, on either Flickr or Shutterfly. We'll let you know. Love to all, Pat/Jim/Mom/Dad/Norm/Kathy... read more

Headed to Michigan recently after finishing up in West Virginia. My cousin was having a graduation party and we figured it was only 7 hours away instead of the normal 10. Why not go? Also had a chance to stop in Ann Arbor to see my uncle Joe and Adrian to see my grandparents. Never enough time, but such is life. Michigan is exactly the way I remember it. My family moved away in 1993 because of job opportunities and their don't seem to be any new jobs since we left. Stores look the same, with older construction, advertisements and products. It's like going back in time there. We repeatedly saw police cars with the spinning red light on the roof, reminiscent of cars from a generation ago. Certainly a far cry from the ever expanding ... read more

So, here I am, back in the good old U-S-of-A, living life as an umemployed post-traveler, moping around my parents house, catching up on TV, and reminiscing with photos from my trip! I just wanted to finish up my blog with this little disclaimer. Although I had an amazing trip, and had many incredible experiences, there were also a lot of crazy things I had to put up with. Life on the road entails a lot of rolling with the punches, and adapting to a lifestyle that many people would have difficulty with. Paying 4$-10$ a night for a hotel room in Thailand really helped my budget, but it also meant you didn't have much control over the conditions of the room. Sometimes they would be fine.....other times, not so much. Ashley and I put together ... read more

Whit, playing our travel agent, has come up with a great set of plans for our trip. * Monday morning, Feb 25, we plan to fly from Auckland to Queenstown; probably staying at the Pinewood Lodge ($90NZ) on Mon, Tue, and Wed night. * Tuesday is our Milford Sound all day sidetrip. * Wednesday is our 1/2 day Lord-of-the-Rings tour! Go Frodo, Merry, and Pippin! * Thursday we rent a car and start driving to Christchurch (about 6 hours total). Probably stop along the way and stay at Lake Tekapo for an overnight, since we are probably not overnight-mountain-climbing due to Torrie's knee injury last weekend. * Friday we'll finish the drive into Christchurch and stay there. * Saturday morning we'll be in Christchurch, maybe do the big gondola ride to the cliff top, then fly ... read more

Saying my last good-byes It's been nice taking time this past month to see many important people and having the time to catch up on their lives before leaving. I've been pretty lucky to not have to work for the short time I've had off to be able to do this. Whenever I visit Ann Arbor, I love walking around seeing everything, enjoying just being there, especially without everyday stresses of school work and extracurriculars. I'm able to sit down somewhere, including my favorite place on campus, and read a book. Yes, I like going to Ann Arbor just to read a book. I went to my grandparent's house a couple of days ago and had the last get together with my family before I leave on Friday. Lol, some of my family still think ... read more

Torrie and I just booked our flights for Auckland, New Zealand! Thanks Werner, Marianne, and Marc for making this trip possible! Whitney, doing a study abroad there for 6 months, is our on-the-ground travel agent for our upcoming NZ adventures. She's come up with some great suggestions so far, including a hike to a South Island mountain top for an overnight! I'm interested in some South Island train excursions, but so far Whit is pushing for the fly & car routine.... read more
